You can get 4K upscale as good or even better sometimes from a decent 4K TV as well though. It took me a while to figure out the best settings but after I did, the difference in sharpness and detail was amazing playing a regular 1080p bluray. In conclusion 1080p bluray upscaled to 4K by a decent TV it won't look the same as 4K but it will be closer than you would ever imagined. I also own a 4K Apple TV and I have watched 4K HDR content, while it is amazing it's not miles away from a regular 1080p bluray upscaled to 4K. I'm sure 4K Bluray is better than 4K streaming, but 1080p Bluray on a 4K TV isn't to be considered old news. It's up there believe me. In conclusion I won't be rushing out to buy a new 4K UHD Bluray player to replace my old 1080p Bluray player. And to be honest, while I do have the option of streaming 4K HDR movies from the Apple TV I think I will still prefer the 1080p Bluray upscaled from my TV to 4K and getting all the other benefits such as Dolby TRUE-HD/DTS-HD Master AUDIO.

I'm a film maker that works (films) with Sony's 4K Cinealta technology. First, for real 4K i.e. not upscaled from 1080p, you will need a very large screen to see the real & genuine benefits. A 50ft cinema screen would demonstrate clear differences. Larger screens for 6K & 8K. I have a 70" 4K Tv. I can see the difference up real close, but from a normal viewing distance, HD from Blu-ray looks just as good. If you had a 4K projector (not upscaled) with your own home cinema, you would benefit 😉

I agree with you. People seem to be obsessed with pixel count now that the marketing trend is 4k. Pixel count has the least impact on image quality unless you are using a projector or you sit really close to your TV. Most improvements we are seeing with 4k TVs are due to HDR, better brightness, and better contrast ratios. Increased computing power naturally brings increased pixel count and manufacturers will be soon pushing 8k and then 16k. But the only way to move the consumer towards further increases in pixel count is to make bigger screens or screens that are closer to your eyes. I think this is where the next generation of technology is going: folding TVs and then eventually full VR but with light portable glasses. Also with VR 3D becomes relevant again, so 3D will make a resurgence eventually. To conclude... it's a bit of a certainty that VR and AR are eventually where the industry is going...

I think the main reason to bother with a 4K TV is for streaming content. HD streaming is often quite inferior to the quality of HD Blu-ray with the much greater amount of compression, while 4K streaming tends to get you a much nicer bitrate (thus, better video quality...) Most platforms simply won’t let you stream the same video quality at the lower resolution, so you’re often stuck using a 4K TV to get truly high quality HD+ video over the internet. And yeah, this is only due to these platforms choosing to lock the higher video quality into these higher resolutions, but that’s another topic...

I understand what you’re saying, but part of the reason that Blu-Rays look so good on a 4K TV is that they’re upscaled. So you’re right, the difference is more noticeable in terms of HDR. But since the 4K version isn’t much more than the Blu-Ray on most new releases, I’m getting 4K and only replacing Blu-Rays I have if the 4K is a significant remaster.

Their native resolution is 1920x1080. Also, even if you do have a true 4K projector, if you're seeing a difference in detail between ~2K and 4K then you're sitting too close to the screen. 2K DCPs are still more common than 4K DCPs, which means you're more likely to see 2K in a theater than 4K. Theater screens are way bigger than 12'. Even in a small discount theater, the screen is usually at least 25'.

I think a lot of people who don't get the difference simply don't have their televisions calibrated properly. You can't just pull it out of the box and go with the default settings. You have to research a little and get it how you like it. I had my 70" 4K TV and player for some time before I hit that "sweet spot." Added to that, a 4K player usually upscales BD discs, so they look better than on a regular BD player anyway, which may make it seem like the difference isn't as great, but the difference is staggering... truly. Put that BD disc into an old BD player and compare that to a 4K disc in a 4K player on a properly calibrated 4K TV and tell me it still looks the same. You also need a proper cable. The one that comes with the TV or 4K player is usually just a regular HD cable.

Apparently, no one understands the need for 4K, and certainly no one is explaining it. That's because retailers need to make money, and having the next latest amazing gear sells products. But the truth, as you are discovering in this video, is that the level of difference btw the two formats for viewers watching movies on home theater systems is very small and nearly undetectable. Now for the real reason why 4K was developed. Movies have historically been projected from film onto very large movie house screens with no pixelation issues. High definition became popular for home use and for video makers because the resolution was so much better than in SD, which really was very poor. But if you project an HD movie onto a very large screen in a movie house, you will get easily noticeable pixilation, esp when seated in the first half dozen rows in front of the screen. So along comes 4K, and now the resolution is sufficient to compare to film, and no pixilation is noticeable in the movie house. HD could never replace film for movie house display, but 4K can. As for making videos for youtube, and for watching movies at home, HD is just fine. In fact, all my SD movies on DVD look pretty good on my HD TV.

I am more than happy with 1080P Blu Ray quality. I used to be one of those early adopters who had to have the latest tech but not anymore I’m tired of giving the big tech companies and Hollywood studios all my money! I am from the U.K. and regularly purchase disc only Blu Rays from people who bought the 4K version and want to recoup some of their cash. They normally sell for £5/6 for the latest movies which is far better value than £20//25 for the equivalent 4K. I can understand people wanting the 4K disk as it usually has the Atmos sound mix attached to it ( the studios are very cunning not to include the Atmos mix on most 1080p versions to encourage people with Atmos setups to pay the extra money for the 4K disk) I have a very high end 5.1 audio setup and don’t plan on upgrading to Atmos so that doesn’t appeal to me either. I also do ALL of my movie watching on my 1080p JVC projector and the image quality is outstanding. Ok I might see slightly less colours and no HDR (which hasn’t been properly Implemented on projectors yet, anyway) so for the foreseeable future I’ll stick with what I have. Maybe I will upgrade to 4K when the new 8k standard for movies will be released, hopefully by then I will be able to pick up 4K discs for the £5/6 I am paying now.

I suppose that when this video was uploaded in late summer of 2017, some of his points WERE correct. But as of May 2019, ALOT of of his criticisms are just wrong. At 5:28, he even says " it's not worth buying a 4K player or 4K movies.", and I could not disagree more. The fact that he saw very little improvement when comparing the 4K version of THE REVERANT compared to the 1080P version of the same movie boggles my mind. The HDR color, improved shadow detail and undeniable upgrade in overall picture quality is totally obvious. It actually makes me question the quality of this guy's vision. Here are a list of some 4k UHD movies as of MAY 2019 that look SIGNIFICANTLY better than their 1080P little brother: ALIEN Bohemian Rhapsody Fury IT Wonder Woman Coco Mad Max Some movies have offered minimal upgrades from 1080P to 4K which do not justify a purchase. But overall, this opinion expressed that purchasing a 4K player and 4K UHD Blu-Rays are not worth it is simply not true. As long as you value picture quality, SOUND QUALITY and are willing to invest in 4K UHD movies you plan to watch more than 2-3 times, 4K disc media IS worth it.

Alien just looks that good compared to Blu-ray because of the brand new 4K Master, the bluray is from 2010 and they used some filters to remove film grain. If they gave this movie a brand new remasterted 1080p Bluray the difference won't be that big. The other movies in your list are not that much better than the 1080p Version. HDR itself can be mind-blowing but most movies do not use all of the potential it brings. even some movie fans on youtube do a better HDR colour grading than the buyable 4k blurays. If the Bluray is also mastered in 4k the only noticeable difference between bluray and 4k bluray is hdr which the moviemakers do not use in the right way. This is why 4 bluray sucks.

It's a matter of "incremental benefit" with technology changes. The more technology is mature and the more incremental benefits are relatively small. 4k and now 8k are more about marketing differentiators than other.

I love blu rays. I do think DVD is still the mostp opular as mostp eople have a dvd player to hand. I think DVD's look good but when seeing the same movie on blu ray, there is a very clear difference visually and audibly, and it feels a lot more immersive. It's a shame Hollywood won't catch up to today's tech.

The quality is amazing but I'm not paying 30 to 40 bucks for a dvd

4k is only $5 more for than normal. 4k comes with both versions. 4k Jurassic Park is only $60 for the box set. Divide that across 5 movies and you are paying less than $10 per movie. Also, Blu ray is not a dvd.

I use 'realorfake4k' when purchasing 4k discs. If they're just 2k upscaled I won't bother.

Personally, I find that good HDR makes WAY more impact than resolution on the worth of the UHD Blu-ray format. Many titles that only have a 2K DI are still well worth the upgrade because of this. Pacific Rim mentioned above is a phenomenal example of this. All the glass and metallic objects throughout look so much more lifelike. City lights against the nighttime darkness. I use this movie to wow friends who question the worth of HDR routinely and it never fails to make the case.
@blojosh6 жыл бұрын
nacthenud I'll look into getting Pacific Rim. I only have one 2k upscaled disc, which is It (2017), and I just wasn't impressed. Comparing it to the Blu-ray was depressing because I really couldn't see the difference. Maybe on the balloon and the yellow coat, but it's not enough to pay extra for.
@nacthenud6 жыл бұрын
I'll be interested to hear how it turns out for you. On my TV, to my eyes, I notice a dramatic improvement from HDR in many cases, but there are some that you have to really work hard to find the improvement. I haven't seen It, so I can't comment there.

I found out that 4K Blu-ray Disc hasn’t have region codes on the discs and the player compared to the 1080p Blu-Ray Disc and DVD disc. That researched it online wanting a movie from overseas that isn’t available here in Australia.

I got it for the Dolby Vision HDR and better colors. It's all about the mastering and how the film was shot. It's definitely a tricky one. For most people streaming will be just fine. For myself I love what Dolby Vision offers and can tell a big difference. However it's not like going from DVD to Blu-ray. With that being said. This will be my last physical media upgrade, period. I'm still upgrading DVD's. Plus there's films that haven't even made it to Blu-ray yet. All about those film rights!
@Tony-19715 жыл бұрын
I agree. Many older movies and tv series' that haven't even made it to blu ray yet and will probably take for ever to do so. I was surprised to learn that Disney's The Black Hole is still not on blu ray. I just bought the recently released Space Precinct dvd collection. They said that it was only possible to release it on dvd and no blu ray will ever be released.

@@Tony-1971 Amazing guess it boils down to time. Having enough of it to do a proper 4K film scan and get it out onto a Blu-ray.

In my opinion, 3D Blu-ray still remains the best format. Especially for an immersive experience. If you were lucky enough to pick up a 2016 LG 3D OLED, you're truly experiencing the best the format has to offer. Also, you might want to consider updating your 4K player if you haven't done so already. That Samsung player you're using is like one of the worst on the market next to the LG 970. Consider the Panasonic or Oppo for a more authentic experience.

Agree 100%. Unfortunately, I missed out on the 2016 models and making due with my old LG for 3D. But...I will be getting a 3D/4K projector soon. A friend has one and uses his wall and the image is better than most standard TVs. And 3D on a 120" wall space is better than in theaters! (Saw FROZEN 3D and it seemed like it was snowing all around us!) They are also HALF THE PRICE ($1500) of todays panel sets. I'll use the savings to get an actual screen...and it would still be lower than panel sets. May not be as good as OLED but its still incredibly sharp, detailed, and color-accurate.. And that size will make a bigger difference in viewing pleasure anyway.
@paulmanz60706 жыл бұрын
I agree. In 2016 I bought what I think was the last 3D TV model made, or at least, one of them. It was an LG which ticked off a few boxes for me. 3D, 4k, HDR and Dolby Vision. I've bought a few 4k movies, but have not seen a huge ( improvement either. However, the 3D was incredible. It's like they finally perfected it, then canceled it. ...and that's using passive glasses! My old DLP had active glasses which were a royal pain. I'm glad you can still buy European 3Ds, and that they are region-free. I hope that continues for a while. X-Men: Apocolypse in 3D is astonishing. (plus the orchestra conductor in the score is a great friend.)
@jbela17776 жыл бұрын
No, it’s not worth it. The best viewing experience is in a theater within a very large screen. That’s why DVDs still sell. It just doesn’t matter to most people.
@Mariachi12066 жыл бұрын
4k alone isn‘t worth it but the combination 4k on an OLED TV with HDR enabled will open your eyes. You will not want to go to the cinema afterwards, take my word for it.
@brutal7226 жыл бұрын
Even with a 55" 4K HDR I find the cinema to be less eyes pleasing. That being said people are also more susceptible to distinguish details with higher resolution as well

droclinic definitely not, blu-ray prices drop down to 8€ really quickly, yet 4k uhd blu-rays are always 20€ or 30€

Vertti blu rays are stiller cheaper, but every 4K comes with a blu Ray copy. I have around 50 4K movies and the difference between them is very noticeable. Since I love movies so much a superior picture quality is most have for me. I’d say on average I pay 15 to 20 dollars for each one, amazon has great deals, just have to keep on eye on the prices. Plus I try to buy 4K box sets and that saves a lot of money. I recommend Christopher Nolan movies in 4K, they look incredible, this video does not mention imax shots and completely sweeps hdr under the rug.
@PANDRIUX5 жыл бұрын
Hello, I agree with you I think that instead of calling them 4k, they should have delivered us immediately the 2K, how is it not ?! since according to video that is the maximum resolution in the cinemas and how do you sign a movie?

It depends on the individual title some are still just 2k upscaled while others are true 4K especially if they were shot on film because film has a lot of information
