Yeah you can do that on most of these types of stages. The next wave only spawns after a pass a threshold of enemies remaining, so you can drain a lot of time just letting them live. Sometimes its limited to only a certain type of enemy (usually it has to be a dangerous enemy in these cases), so its worth experimenting to see what you can find. You also seem to drain even more time if you intentionally let them cross the barrier rather than killing them right before they cross it, although this takes away from your 20 point limit, so can't be done too often.
