"I don't like to offend people..."!. Well, no decent person 'likes' to offend just for the sake of it, but surely it sometimes comes with the territory as a comedian and people should still have the right to offend without having to fear being cancelled!

@@ogorhenry7154 Of course they do, but as long as they are not preaching outright hatred or inciting violence, in a free society people should have the right to offend even if it is intentional. Example, Bill Maher offends some people or groups on a regular basis, and he absolutely should have the right to do that, just as his targets should have the right to offend him back. Now, let me be clear, I'm not advocating people being offensive to each other. Just saying that in a free society people should have the right to offend.

@@Kelveron I completely agree with you- that being said, some people actually deserve to be canceled as a result of their toxic rhetoric and dangerous actions. Take Trump for example, people argue that he has the right to say the election was stolen even though it wasn’t- but that is not the issue; this guy has moved from just expressing his feelings, to actually trying to undermine the very fabric of the American society- which is the public having the right to freely elect their leaders. Still on Trump, I’m surprised he is not in jail for asking a public official to fabricate votes so he could win the State. Imagine asking someone to do what you claim to immensely disapprove of.

Why is voicing an apology to that person or feeling bad for that person a "fixation"? Does that person not matter? What percentage of the audience should have a great time and feel that they spent their money well on the tickets? What percentage is supposed to come back and tell their friends how great it was? It's possible that someone may take offense, and even that she might apologize, and that's okay. The backlash against so-called "cancel culture" is way worse that any perceived cancel culture. As some others have said before, there is a difference between apologizing for your message and apologizing for making somebody else feel bad. One is saying "I was wrong by saying it and I won't do it again" and the other is just showing empathy. You can stand up for your beliefs and your message and simultaneously mind the feelings of other people. It doesn't negate the fact that the offended party went to the show and could have researched the comedian and his/her usual material. As Glaser said, it's a matter of accountability and "deal with it" is just an arrogant response, indicating that your world only revolves around you. I adjust my language when I am around kids or Mormons or other people who don't like swear words because I don't want to make them uncomfortable. That doesn't mean that I don't fully stand behind the style of language that I use. If you have no regard for the feelings of other people, there are only two possible reasons for that, neither of which is positive or noble. Having such regard does not mean you have to change who you are and what you believe in, though.

@@komponents7977 So you have to be poor to be have compassion? How do you know it's not something cheap or something the production gave her? Besides, I wish all rich people would have been compassionate and use their power to protect and save others. That's sure as hell better than using it to gain more money w/o thinking about the consequences and hurting others, less fortunate

@yy z The ADA itself talks about the benefits of a appropriately planned vegan diet. There are studies, such as one from Harvard, telling about the harm in eating animal products (in the Harvard study they say red meat consumption linked to increased risk of total, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality) Putting the health benefits aside, eating animals and their products is simply giving money to the horrifying abuse those innocent animals are going through 💔

When I was at the UW, nobody gave AF about guest speaker events, comedians, protests against either, or "cancel culture" We were frigging busy.

No one did when I was in college or grad school either. However, there seems to be an element present in today's conservatism that lives to offend people, not inform people. Milo Y & Richard Spencer weren't invited to colleges to create a dialogue or discourse. They were invited to come say outlandishly offensive things with no value to overall discourse. This shit-stirring troll element just didn't exist 25 years ago.

@@JV-rx3ov Exactly. I remember seeing Dr Atkins for a panel, and the other cardiologists ripped him for non-inpatient ketosis. That was interesting. The rest of my time: buried in books writing. This just sounds like universities desperate for attention (for the wrong reasons) inviting speakers desperate for attention (for the wrong reasons). If I want this Id go see a circus

@@JV-rx3ov I also feel like the monetized industry of "the roving college speaker" wasn't really a thing 25 years ago as it is today. What do people like Milo Yianopolous and Richard Spencer actually DO, other than occasionally compile all their talking points into a book and publish it? They just go from place to place being paid to talk and say outlandish and offensive shit. Was that a profession in the 80s or 90s? I was a kid then, so if it was I wasn't aware of it.
