I knew Nikki was anorexic when I saw her eating her cereal in Big Brother, it was so obvious to me and I’ve never forgotten it. I had an issue myself many years back but fortunately for me I managed to overcome it as I wasn’t so deep into the illness before tackling it. Rest in peace Nikki x

So much of this hits home. I battled for 15+ years. I’ve lost over 16 friends I’ve met through treatment. Most were under the age of 35. I don’t know why I’m still here… the last email I got from one friend said “I don’t want to die, but I don’t know how to live with this.” And I remember thinking I’d try to find out. That was ten years ago and I’m still trying. It’s a beast; a demon. The face Nikki made when those doors opened resonated so deeply with me, because it looked like something she never expected to feel but had longed to - and still couldn’t quite believe. That’s the grip of eating disorders- they never let us believe we’re enough, even if it’s right in front of our face. Or if we do, it’ll wait around the corner to challenge us. I never thought I’d say this about that show, but the acceptance and friendships she found in that show were so heartwarming and I truly think were a blessing.

It's a very interesting point the therapist makes. Anorexia is a symptom of an underlying mental or emotional condition. That is the root of the problem which needs addressing first I would imagine.

After reading nikkis book several times. I cant believe what she went through at the clinics, they used food as punishments! Like if they didn't finish every crunbthey got punished with another plate of food. Why, what makes them think that would work? Just pushes their fear of food even more.Their goal is to I'll them backup with calories bit there should also have been other areas of support.

See this is what bothers me as well. Something must have happened. I just cannot accept you are born like this, the world we live in shapes us. I also think her dog died as well so that's 3 things but I wonder if the kids at gymnastics bullied her about her weight or something and she never told anyone. Often when you are bullied you never tell your parents the full story.

A major, traumatic event must have happened to her in early childhood to trigger this. Ordinary six year olds don't have body dysmorphia.

I read both of Nikki's memoirs. Her father had rage disorder after losing his job and her grandfather died, whom she was very close to (at age 7). Her parents divorced. And a girl teased her about her weight in her gymnastics class at that age too.
