I don't know how to explain this but i love when black actors get put into roles like this, stupid cliché rom coms high school dramas stuff like that it completely normalises black people in roles that aren't about slavery or living in the hood or racism and its just nice to see a black girl playing a cheesy character in a cheesy film
@whyyoureadinmyname51457 жыл бұрын
TAMEXPO yeah but they fuck up when everyone else is white. It's like she's the special snowflake. Like do one of these movies without doing obvious interracial love propaganda.
@isobel647 жыл бұрын
so in other words acting like a white person? you can be black and not be a stereotype of either races. dancing for 3 mins randomly? for what?
@ellax3257 жыл бұрын
isobel64 I dance for 3 mins randomly. Just because it shows a different type of black person doesn't mean they are trying to be white. And I think that's the problem. Because films like this exist portraying black people and women as anything other than serious, slaves or poor, people believe black people like this don't exist. We can create movies that are silly and not necessarily for the advancement of black people because honestly it can get depressing and tiring. This is a different route. There is nothing wrong with that. Black people can have silly romcoms. It doesn't mean we are imitating white people.
@isobel647 жыл бұрын
I dont know what you're going on about.I watch Nollywood. we're not shown as slaves or any such things. Trying to make Jessica Jones out as deeper than it really is. Interesting how whenever they do these so called "black girl quirky shows" her friends and love interest are ALWAYS WHITE.

I dont think the point of the film was to present any sort of new ideas about love or anything lol but it did provide much needed representation for black girls in that genre of film. I feel like it was intentionally corny and the fact that a black girl was playing a weird 20-something looking for love gave the movie a unique trait
@RebekkahPhD7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It demonstrated that blacks girls are silly, quirky, awkward, and weird; traits usually reserved for white girls.

As a writer, I didn't watch for the romantic storyline but for her struggle in finding her place within the writing world. I loved the characters interaction with her theater students and she also introduced me to writer/performer Sarah Jones. The romantic drama was just a filler storyline in my opinion. I love the Mielle Organics deep conditioner!

I loved it, I wish it was a series instead of a movie. I think the focal point was her character instead of the storyline. She's very lost and all over the place but still very sure of herself and sure that she's a big deal despite what happens to her, that makes her very relatable. In terms of acting, I think it was really realistic and not overdone.

What I did like was the struggles regarding finding success as a playwright and how she was so passionate about it and how she was the black sheep in her family. And I liked her class she had w/ the kids and how she kept encouraging them. I loved the movie and I was surprised by your review. I enjoyed how the ending wasn't typical and I felt the movie was about accepting and being happy with your life as it is. She found love with someone she didn't expect and she found happiness in a job she didn't expect. We are taught to reach for ideals which is great but then we miss out on being happy today because what we have doesn't hold up to the idea of what we should want.

I loved this movie! I watched it about 3 times in 2 days. What I love about it is that you don't often get to see a black girl, being goofy, in a romantic comedy, where she is the lead and not the helpful sidekick. And in this movie the white girl was helpful sidekick and Advance the black girl storyline. That's something that you also really ever see. So, I went into it expecting a frothy light funny cute comedy and that's what I got and I just absolutely adored it.

Really enjoying these 'Watch and Go' reviews.. I definitely agree with Nikki- the movie is just ok.. it's like a movie you watch when you've called out of work or skipped class but didn't tell your squad before so you just killin time until they can report what you missed.. or you watch something without your partner and if it's really good you act like you didn't watch so they can't be upset- this movie would fall under 'I watched it already.. you ain't missing nothing' category..

The Avocado hair milk is life! It's the best leave-in I've tried. I don't recommend the Honey Ginger gel during the summer. The honey & glycerin makes my hair very soft but also very frizzy in humid weather. It doesn't have a lot of hold so I wouldn't really use it as a gel. I was not impressed by the White Peony leave-in spray. Didn't do too much for my hair & it was hard to use with wet, slippery hands.

I enjoyed the movie, but as far as growth goes, Jessica's character really didn't have any? She was straight up rude to A CHILD cause the girl wanted to spend time with her dad, and at no point in the movie did Jessica seem remorseful about it or even apologize. It was an okay movie, but the importance of it was just seeing a black woman in a role that wasn't cliche or where they were the side kick. It was just nice to see a normal black woman in a film about everyday stuff that everybody can relate to. It wasn't a movie about a BLACK woman struggling to find love (meaning they didn't emphasize her race a lot). It was more so just about a woman figuring out how to date after a break up. And even though the story line was a bit bland, the film helps pave the way for future actors, filmmakers etc. to create and star in films about everyday life that doesn't present black characters as stereotypes or doesn't paint a movie with black actors as a "niche" category of film. I think they did a good job of creating a film that easily could have replaced Jessica with a white actress or Latina or Asian... and inclusion is so important in today's media.
@isobel647 жыл бұрын
white friends, white situations, white love interest. how is it not cliche for an "offbeat" movie
