Bob Odenkirk is such a good actor. He's played 4 roles in this series. Jimmy, early Saul, Breaking Bad Saul, and Gene. All are similar and yet very different and he has transitioned between these 4 seamlessly. He deserves the Emmy that has long eluded him.

As a native Nebraskan, and by default a giant Nebraska college football fan, I can't say enough good things about this episode. All the references and "football talk" are spot on and well-researched: losing to an unranked Texas team, playing Oklahoma St. the following week, our love/hat relationship with head coach Bo Pelini, Martinez's record-breaking freshmen year in 2010, moving to the Big 10, Tom Osborne's legacy, Tom Frazier and the 1995 team (perhaps the greatest of all time). Vince and Peter's writing is gold...this episode would only take place in Nebraska, and they way the writer's incorporated my home state into the plot makes my heart sing!

It’s true that Vince, Peter, and the rest of the writers room come up with the beats of each story as a team, but the specifics of dialogue (excluding major story moments) are left for the writers to create on their own. So Ann Cherkis is the one who deserves the credit for that realistic and well-researched small talk.

For me it's a matter of what point of his life you're referring to. From BCS flashbacks to his conman days in Chicago, it's slippin' Jimmy. For most of "current time" BCS, it's just Jimmy McGuill, but transitions to Saul Goodman by the mid-season 6 finale. For all of BrBa, it's Saul Goodman and of course for all of the last half of season 6, it's Gene Takyvik till the very last episode which he goes back to Saul Goodman.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the writers made Kim a Nebraska native. I think she'll be visiting Omaha, and she'll walk into Cinnabon and run into Gene/Saul/Jimmy. Then, they'll at least have a conversation, if not spend the day together. I don't think it'll end with a "happy" ending where they end up together, but maybe he'll be happy that she's happy.

Regarding Kim leaving, check out this parallel: As Marco was dying in the finale of season 1, he told Jimmy that he had the best week of his life. And as Kim was leaving, she said she was having so much fun. I guess it's a lesson that you can never live a life like that and have it last. Will Jimmy learn that in time for this finale and find a way to have a happy ending?

As a diehard Husker fan, this was an awesome episode for me. One little but huge detail in the conversations between Frank and Gene is the talk about when Nebraska played Oklahoma State in 2010. The reason why it’s so huge is because the Huskers played Okie State on October 23rd, 2010. Why it’s huge is because we finally know when the Gene timeline takes place but also this is around the time Walt come back to Albuquerque from New Hampshire

This may age like milk, but I'm going to say it. I think that this episode shatters the belief that Gene misses Saul Goodman in the first episode. Where the only color we see in Gene's life is his old commercials, representing his "past." But the moment he embodied Saul Goodman, that color in Gene's life didn't come back. And he ultamitely decided to literally hang up the persona all together at the end of the episode (like a boxer hanging up his gloves in retirement). Leading me to believe that the color in Gene's life is rooted in his past. But the color that Gene is missing in his life isn't Saul Goodman. The color missing in Gene's life is Kim Wexler.

I think the moment that hit me (and hit Gene) the most was when Marion told him that he’s a “good influence”. Because it’s the first time ever in his life that someone else praised him for doing good thing (albeit not true). Before that it’s either insults even after doing good things from Chuck or compliments for doing bad things like Kim, Walter and Jesse. I could say that Jimmy has ZERO positive influence in his life before then. Marion was the first one. Gene knew full well that him being a good influence is not true. In fact, he’s way closer to being a “bad crowd”. That made him kinda reevaluate himself real hard and might consider to retire from his Saul Goodman’s life for good in the end of episode by hanging that shirt (Also notice that even after all those schemes, his world NEVER turned back to color. Which means Gene knew that scam couldn’t really make him happy. Not sustainable or fulfilling.) For the rest of his life, he wanted to continue living as Gene. He might use a scam in case there’s Jeff kind of problem again but he won’t scam full time. He just want to live a normal life. And that’s the perfect moment for something to disrupt his mundane life permanently in the rest 3 episodes. A calm before the biggest storm, so to speak, because this franchise never let anyone get away unpunished (except maybe Kim Wexler, and that’s the part I’m afraid of the most).

What got me was Jimmy’s “breakdown” during the heist. It started as merely a distraction tactic, but a Freudian would ask why his mind immediately went in that direction when he was under extreme pressure. I think we get the answer as soon as he tells Cinnabon Guy that his brother is dead… he sort of stumbles in his monologue because he realizes he’s telling the truth of his life and it’s incredibly sad.

Timeline for this episode is clear with all of the Nebraska football notes. We are in October 2010. Which is about 7 months after Saul fled Albuquerque, 1 month after Walter White died, and less than month shy of the phone call that Saul told Francesca she needed to answer.

Hey, Nikki. You got that that was Carol Burnett faster than I did. lol And I'm a huge fan. I grew up with this woman ( with Harvey, Tim & Vicky) making me laugh. I was so, so wrong about where Gene's story was going (where he was going), but it's okay. This was way more interesting. Gene didn't just go back to being Saul. Because the Saul we knew didn't do all this elaborate stuff, he just did shady lawyer stuff. This plan of Gene's was right out of Jimmy's book. He went way back. Good shit! I love it! But, he also took a little bit from the Walt/Heisenberg book, too, when he was warning the guys, "I am not your friend." Funny how we watch these characters breaking the law, and yet feel so much anxiety for them. 🤣 35:21 ngl..I thought they were going to transition to color right at that moment. Would have been cool, but I'm guessing there's gonna be a cooler moment coming. I still think that Saul is going to meet up with Kim at some point, and it won't be good. No good ending for them, if they come together once more. 🤍🖤👔

There was so much great stuff in this episode. Gene echoed so many breaking bad characters. The shopping mall heist had the tension of the train heist. I called it when Jeff was going to fall.I agree , I would love to watch someone watched BCS before BB. It would be a total difference experience. It also shows how solid the writing is to keep this universe make sense without plot holes.

Your guys’ discussions & analyses of this show is such an awesome tool for me to rewatch/revisit moments I didn’t catch on my first watch through. Gotta agree with Steven, that we are certainly not wrapped up with Kim. Funny enough, when Saul goes on his break at the end we see him carrying a KC Royals lunch box. Kim was a big Royals fan and wore their shirts at times. Why? She’s from the Midwest. Where’s Saul? The Midwest. And if I had to guess? When Kim leaves ABQ, the first place she’d probably think of regaining her life back is home...her real home. So, my guess is we’ll see her and Gene have a chance encounter (most likely heart wrenching). Wouldn’t be surprised if she shows up at the mall with kids & a new husband perhaps, or if Steven’s theory is correct where they rekindle & Saul picks up the shirt/tie he left, thus rebirthing the cycle. Showcasing that the bad guys sometimes get away, much like Ozark communicated. Regardless of direction, I know we’re in great hands with these writers. Sad to see it end, but I’m glad we’ll all get to enjoy the ride of the rest of this spectacular show together!

Gene moved toa middle of nowhere in Nebraska, and Kim was born and raised in a middle of nowhere in Nebraska. I think it would be poetically dark, if they did found each other and stayed together, but neither of them was happy in the end, because of all that has happened

If I were new to these shows, I think it would be interesting watching Better Call Saul first as the creators was so good at making us almost forget about certain characters surviving into Breaking Bad, and then watch Breaking Bad as BB climaxed in such a gut wrenching way, then we also get to understand more fully the beginning and ending of Better Call Saul.

I think the guard probably figured Gene was embarrassed after his breakdown and it would be awkward to continue on with the relationship. Also, by the time inventory is taken the tape will have been erased-it’s erased every 72 hrs. And only 3 items of each taken won’t draw attention right away. Great reaction!

Great reaction! I purchased a Cinnabon to eat while watching the episode to go with some Dos Hombres. The right way to eat one is definitely from the outside in, saving the best for last. I might do this again for the remaining episodes then make the difficult decision to never eat one again. This show is incredible. Even an out of left field episode like Nippy keeps you tense and at the edge of your seat. Can’t wait to witness the bittersweet conclusion of this universe.
