I like to remind people: Nate was an asshole in his very FIRST scene, running across the pitch, screaming at Beard and Ted. He has always taken out his insecurities by punching down.

The "Don't you dare settle for fine!" scene is EVERYTHING. From Roy's delivery to how Keely realized he was talking about the way she makes him feel, everything about it makes it one of my favorite Ted Lasso scenes. The layers to all of these characters and how we see them all unpeel and develop throughout the show is amazing. I think this is the point when Roy totally won me over.

I was won over by Roy earlier, but the moment that made it official was seeing him quietly monthing along to "Let It Go" while watching Rebecca at karaoke. And the "fine" speech here absolutely locked it down! 👏👏👏

At 13:01 - the Dutch are notoriously VERY blunt. Not rude, but extremely direct. It can be quite a shock to talk to a Dutch person, until you get used to how they think.

One of the best examples is Formula 1 Dutch driver Max Verstappen. To the public, he was looked as a very rude individual throughout his career, but people are just now starting to warm up to him and accept the fact that he's not trying to be rude but rather direct.

@@SkinnyObelix to be fair to the op, a lot of Europe is like this, the Swedes, the Germans and the Scandinavians. The Brits have always been the ones who are overly polite, hence why the rest of Europe doesn't really understand the point of being very polite.

24:10 This is a great speech by Roy. My favorite part about though is that he says it right in front of Keeley, so not only is he giving Rebecca great advice, but he's laying out his feelings about relationships in general. So, if he believes that a romantic partner makes you feel like "you've been struck by f**king lightning" then Keeley now knows that she does that for Roy.

As big as I am a fan of Ted Lasso - both the show and the character - this is one of the two times Ted's stories didn't quite hit home for me. This and another story that he tells in Season 3. I can't put my finger on it but it seemed a little bit shoehorned and ruined by odd pacing: Season 2 has just literally started with a terribly tragic accident happening, then Ted tells a story about his childhood. I guess it didn't seem earned, but that's just a terribly small nitpick for what is my 2nd favorite show of all time (The Good Place is #1).

initially i thought Dr Sharon was kinda rude and stiff in the way that she refused to engage with the coaches, but then i thought about every other coach weve dealt with so far and the average football manager and how they likely would respond not only to a therapist coming in, but that therapist being a black woman, and i immediately got it, shes almost assuredly dealt with the worst egos and treatment from some of the bigheaded people that own and manage these football clubs, shes not cold, or rude, shes confident in who she is and isnt going to let peoples attitude get in her way of doing her job.

I always took Keeley blowing past Roy’s objections to her sitting with him because Roy is embarrassed that he’s about to cry. Keeley knows instantly he really needs comfort. It’s like his extreme self-consciousness/expecting judgement for telling her he does yoga on their first date. It only encourages her more. She actually prefers real communication. It’s also worth noting that Jason and especially Brendan first learned/fell in love with (soccer) when they were working in an Amsterdam theater doing improv. So the dutch football references is a nod to that time.

I once stood in goal and took a penalty kick from a professional footballer in the middle of my body. I am 6ft and well built. The ball actually took me off my feet and I ended up flat on my back, 3 feet from where I had been standing. Was so winded I thought it was the end ! The power is crazy from pro's. (I am NOT in anyway a football player)
@SkinnyObelix
@SkinnyObelix 7 күн бұрын
I was 16 when I made my debut as a goalkeeper in the second tier of Belgian football, after our goalkeeper got a red and a penalty against. So I was up against Patrick Goots (a Belgian cult striker with 155 goals at the Belgian top level) and he het the ball so hard, that even though I got both my hands on the ball, I was just flung backwards and the ball went in. No doubt that any other penalty in the past would have been saved, but not that one. To take up any professional athlete is incomprehensible for the layman, they're blessed with an athletic body AND they work every day to maximize that body...

@thewonkyembouchure
@thewonkyembouchure 7 күн бұрын
It’s definitely possible there’s some jealousy at play, but I think it’s more about Ted feeling unsettled by how Dr Sharon might influence the dynamic he’s worked hard to establish with the team. Ted sees the players as people first, and his leadership is built on trust and emotional connection. Dr Sharon brings a different kind of authority-one that doesn’t rely on charm or relentless optimism but on a clinical understanding of human behaviour. That could make Ted feel a little redundant or unsure of his place, not necessarily because he’s competitive with her, but because he genuinely cares about maintaining the bond he’s created with the players.

Relegation isn't just for the team that finishes last in English football. The bottom tree teams are relegated, so it was likely Richmond finished 3rd bottom in the Premier league and was 1 point off safety. From the Championship you need to finish in the top two to get automatic promotion, then 3rd - 6th have a playoff, and the winner of that gets to go up as well.

21:48 as a Cardinals fan, seeing Rick Ankiel pitch in his rookie year was hype stuff. We thought he was going to be the future of the organization. It was tragic what happened to him in the playoffs that year. However, he has one of the better baseball stories. It was wonderful seeing him make a comeback as a hitter and really dang good defender with a cannon of an arm. There's a centerfield put out he made in Colorado that's one of the best throws from center to third base I've ever seen.

I keep talking about the callbacks on this show, and this episode has a good one that calls back to itself. Phoebe says that Uncle Roy owes her £1,236. Keeley’s only response is, “Impressive.” Later, Dr. Fieldstone asks what the coaches’ record is in the ball game she interrupted. Nate says it’s 1,236. Dr. Fieldstone’s response? “Impressive.”

I did see that From doesn’t have as many votes but I have to say it is an amazing show and SO intriguing and spooky and mysterious, it’s just not as well known as some of the other shows on the list so I doubt as many people have seen it or even heard of it. It’s like Lost only with a spooky twist - and there’s a lot more mysteries to be solved so it leaves you guessing and theorizing constantly. It is such a creative and well done show. You talking about Roy leaving "On top" reminds me of one of my favorite pro sports moments. (Denver Native, here) It was April of 1985, and Dan Issel ("The Horse") was playing his last game. He was retiring from the NBA after 15 seasons, and only missing 24 games. Against San Jose, he took a shot from center court and it sunk with nothing but net. Coach Doug Moe called time out, and pulled "The Horse" from the game. A very long standing ovation while he waved to the crowd for what seemed like a very long time. He came back later as a coach and had a very successful run. Also - Magnolia is a terrific film. You should react to that. I think it's the only movie where Tom Cruise was nominated for an Oscar. Hah, speaking from experience, a football kicked full strength to the face by an _amateur_ hurts _a lot_ - like, a lot a lot :) - so I could see one kicked by a world class professional killing a dog. Everybody using "tie" is one of the show's concessions to international viewers (in the UK we say "draw" pretty much exclusively). And it's 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw (0 for losing obvs :) which means _technically_ you can win the league with only draws (if every game by every team is drawn it's then judged on goals scored) though that's never happened and almost certainly never will. (also, Waitrose is a UK supermarket but it's one of the most expensive, hence Roy's affectionate leg pulling about Keeley being "the Queen" as in, to him you have to be posh to shop there. I expect Roy is more a Lidl or Aldi kinda guy :)

Yeah, maybe let the finish this first; but Shrinking is fantastic. I think the second season was even better than the first, including the new cast member...

Imo I think no you missed it about the scene at the end of last season between Jamie and Ted. I don't think Jamie was disappointed, I think he was more embarrassed that Ted saw his father acting like that when Ted was very good to him but he treated Ted badly.

As someone who watched both American and European sports for decades, I feel like there's good and bad in each system but in the end the US system is better. With relegation teams have to keep playing and fighting so there's no tanking to get better draft spots (well, there's no draft either). The problem is the loss of revenue when teams drop to a lower league (just because of the different TV deals, which of course pay more for the top leagues). That means team owners of middle of the table teams might not want to invest too much and be stuck with contracts they can't afford if they get relegated. The result is a system where a few clubs are fighting for titles and the rest are just happy to be there and hope to stick around. You get the rare Leicester winning a Premiere league title out of nowhere but most of the time you can name the handful of teams who would be fighting for it in every major European league. Meanwhile in the US, team owners can invest because they know they'll get that top TV money. They can bring in top players to try and turn the team around, and we see that. Teams can go from worst to contending for titles very fast. It happens very often in the US and almost never in Europe (it usually takes an oil billionaire to make it happen there). Rewarding you with the best pick in the draft so you can turn the team around faster is great. It's sports socialism while in Europe the rich get richer because they can buy the good players from smaller teams who rely on that money for their budget, they're the capitalists when it comes to sports... Our concept of a dynasty team in US sports would be laughable over there. Teams dominate like that all the time.

The way leagues with relegations and promotions, and no players drafts, work, is that they tend to create dinasties held by the wealthiest and more experienced teams. It's very hard for a smaller club to ever win a top league, so, when it happens, it's seen as a sort of miracle. The club I support had a NINE CONSECUTIVE YEARS winning streak, in our country. Also, there are european leagues that are tournaments played alongside the national leagues, and they are extremely prestigious and bring a lot of money for the clubs that advance in them, especially the top one, the Champions League.

So I’ve looked at the rules for this… and it is the ref’s discretion, if the ref believes the ball was going in, he can award a goal

It is really inappropriate for a couple to see a therapist that has already been seeing one client for awhile. Pretty unethical actually. Couples counseling should always be with an unbiased therapist to both individuals. So it's definitely understandable Ted's feelings, but he also for sure has some issues he could work through with his own therapist. I think Sharon is an excellent antithesis to Ted. She's the exact opposite in professional relationships, and it majorly throws Ted.

Might be worth noting that football (unsure of MLS system) doesn't have a draft, the clubs have academies that scout players young and they grow through these academies. There is 0 benefit to a team being relegated from a league. The higher the league you're playing in, the more money you get from broadcasting contracts etc. Relegation really is an issue for clubs to fight to avoid. And yeah, your best players will likely leave if you're relegated especially if they're a good player on a bad team

In regards to relegation, please remember that eurpean soccer or sports in general do not hsve drafts or college players waiting to enter the league. They also have multiple transfer markets to make their teams better and are heavily rewarded for finishing near the top of the league. Its not winning the league or bust like in American sports

Without relegation there is no promotion, my team QPR has been relegated and promoted a few times and it’s all part of the wonderful roller coaster. And the leagues were set up that way so it would never work in franchise sport as there are so many $$’s involved. However as a keen NFL fan my opinion is that a salary cap would sort out the horrific inequality in football. Ps I love you both ❤️

There is a plan for a salary cap from next season. The players association aren't keen on it.
