Seen an interview with Michelle Yeoh where they were talking about her most iconic roles, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians. She broke down into tears when she started talking about Everything Everywhere All At Once because she felt she finally got to show the type of acting she had always wanted to do, not just action star. It's worth pointing out, she wasn't going to "let Joy leave the nest". Joy was trying to commit suicide across the multiverse. Every version of her dead. That's why it's so shocking when she initially lets her go.

This movie changed my entire outlook on life. Not even joking. This and interstellar fight for the top spot. But this hit me particularly hard when I saw it. I’d say it was the right film at the right time for me. The “In another life…” line really speaks to married or long term relationship people. hey Nikki and Steven, a little trivia: the googly eyes (white with black center) are the opposite of the bagel (black with white center). It's Waymond's positive outlook in life VS Joy's depressive nihilism.
@nuhuh9893

I never noticed that, it's like the yin and yang symbol, and I thought there was a kind of Buddhist tone to the movie. It's like with the sausage fingers they used their feet instead and were still able to play beautiful music on the piano and were positive because negativity leads towards the black hole of depression and apathy. The rock scene was beautiful, they were literally at rock bottom isolated within themselves, Joy didn't want Evelyn to come closer and then at the end there is a brief scene of the rocks and planets colliding. This movie is so deep and rich with symbolism, it's just a masterpiece, one of a kind.

Y’all are too young to remember but in the 1970’s, we had Pet Rocks! They were rocks with Googlie eyes. There were two in a box and you named them, took them everywhere you went and treated them like actual pets. They were so cute! Someone was a frickin’ genius to think of putting eyes on rocks and use the gullibility of everyone to buy those things. I mean everyone in high school had to have them and give them as presents for Christmas’, birthdays. Whenever!

I felt like she wanted a mum to understand her, and die with her. Yet when beta waymond persuaded Evelyn from her sociapath mindset to embracing appreciation and love. Evelyn didn’t want to die. So jobu wants everyone to die no matter if her mum wants to do a suicidal pact or not. The whole family preventing Joy from dying was impactful. And Showing the daughter running in the laundromat emphasis that she’s just her daughter. As a villian u want to let her go. Deep down she’s still her daughter. She needs to know what she’s doing is hurting her mum, her family.

This was certainly the best movie I've seen in many years. The acting, the story, the cinematography, and visuals were all just perfect. Michelle Yeoh put in the performance of her career, as did Ke Huy Quan who hasn't acted since the 80's in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The daughter, played by Stephanie Hsu, was fantastic, and of course Jamie Lee Curtis killed it as the IRS agent. There were no weak spots in my opinion. It really makes the Dr Strange MoM look bad in comparison to how the multiverse was portrayed. Plus this movie cost about 10% of what that one cost ($25 million compared to $200 million) it's a shame this one won't make a billion dollars.

I was lucky to catch this in theaters. It was amazing. We were all laughing, bawling and sniffling. Waymonds part absolutely broke me. When she can’t understand how he helped and his voice breaks when he says, “idk. I just talked to her.” 🥺🥺 Then we see all the little moments of his kindness and silliness that makes her happy. That’s what they were both missing. Her and Joy. Remember when Joy says that’s why she was looking for her mom? To see if she could see something that she missed. They weren’t seeing Waymonds kindness. Also, the bagel represents Joys despair and depression. At the end, it’s super important that it’s Joy who reaches out for her moms hand. She wants help. Then Joys speech about letting her go? Omg the actress is so good. Then their embrace being shown with planets colliding? Like it’s saying that’s just as powerful? So beautiful. I’m crying all over again. Lol 🥹🥹🥹😭😭😭 PS: it was one of the best movie experiences of my life. We wept, laughed, bawled. After movie, there were about 7-8 of us. All strangers. You know, I've finally realized after rewatching this several times, the Alpha Joy, becoming Jobu means that in that universe that Joy was the "worst Joy", the one that failed at everything. Because Alpha Weymond said that in order for the mind to be able to handle all those and access all possibilities they had to be from the universe where every choice was the "wrong" choice. And then Joy at the end tells her mom, "Why wouldn't you choose to be in a place where your daughter is better than this", "this" being "me". So Jobu's Joy was a Joy that failed at everything, in a universe where her mother was the ultimate genius, and she went looking for the one universe where her mom failed at everything just like her. So she was looking for someone who's an ultimate failure like her to tell her there's an upside, a reason to go on, that she couldn't see. So no matter where you are in the multiverse, where you are in existence, by becoming everything everywhere all at once, no matter how high you are, you get the feeling of your worst low, at all times and your worst low gets to see first hand at all times all that you'll never have. So nothing you've ever done matters, and nothing you ever did mattered.

This movie hit me very hard, I had all the feelings at once. The acting in general was phenomenal, I loved Waymon, but the actress who plays Joy, OMG, I felt everything she said, the sadness, the anger, the disappointment and the hopelessness. My favorite movie without a doubt.

You can see the homage the writers made to Wong Kar-Wai during the scenes where Waymond is in a suit, with that particular slow motion camera that is very particular to Wong. The similarities to In the Mood for Love is very heartwarming.

The directors initially wanted Jackie Chan for the lead but as they wrote the story they realized it had to be told through Michelle Yeoh's eyes.

Awesome fact: Ke Huy Quan, who plays the husband, is the actor who played Data in The Goonies and Short Round in Temple of Doom. He had pretty much left acting for 30 years, due to lack of real opportunities for Asian actors. He recently came back, when he saw the success of 'Crazy Rich Asians'. I'm so happy he's back acting. I loved him i the 80's when i was a kid, and he killed his role in this movie.

I loved this movie and I am not kidding when I say that I have been waiting for you guys to react to this for months. The main message that I got from the film is to love your life and the people around you and to stop fixating on the what ifs. Had me questioning, as a person who doesn’t have the best relationship with their family, that is it because of me? Have I been too harsh with them, etc.

I actually quite like the perfume scene, it might seems nothing to us but to that old man, the perfume remind him her wife and it means everything to him, sometimes a small kind gesture meant the world to someone.

This is the only movie I've ever experienced laughing and crying at the same time. I'm not a parent, but I was a child and it hit me hard too. We are all scared sometimes, all confused and sometimes overwhelmed, and family relationships get complicated... so just be kind to each other. And can we shout out the editors? HOW did they edit that footage so seamlessly?

Never have I seen a film that is damn near EVERY kind of genre in film history, and not only that but have it all work! Comedy and action galore, sci-fi aplenty, nice sprinkle of horror and mystery, family and romance, drama and feel-good, heartbreak and Joy. Add to that amazing acting, dope music, incredible editing and choreography, and on top of that it's just so much fun to watch! Truly one of the best films I've ever seen.

Glad you guys gave it a chance after it won in a poll. Let’s keep watching more independent films by storytellers with original ideas! Watched this with you guys a couple fridays ago, saw it twice in theaters when it first came out, it’s one of those movies that comes at you from all directions and completely balances it all. I’m so happy for Michelle Yeoh and all the actors that got to show off in this film, every emotion and beat was fantastic.

one detail I like about this film is that one of the directors wanting it to be about a mother with undiagnosed ADHD (hence with her not focusing on the moment and only listening when its urgent and even amplified when she was jumping into different verses). So the director researched about ADHD and that lead him to getting a diagnosis himself

The thing about eating chapstick or any of the weird things done in this movie right before they become someone from a different universe is the idea that in order to change your life you must get out of your comfort zone, you must take a shot at something you’ve never done before. Also, seeing Nikki finally give into tears, after so many times holding it, was beautiful.

The writers said Albert Camus’s concept of “the absurd” was a huge influence on why the movie goes so out there. It seems like it’s there purely for humor & “randomness” but it’s really there to highlight the movies thesis statement on optimistic nihilism or optimism in the face of accepted nihilism. Joy & wayman both accept the absurd & meaninglessness of the universe but approach it in different ways.
@munkqiking7207
@munkqiking7207 Жыл бұрын
The term youre lookin for is absurdism. The "optimistic nihilism" you refer to and Waymond highlights is absurdism. Its the philosophy that posits that the universe is inherently absurd and without meaning, but the beauty in that is that we make our own meaning and find our own purpose in it. Often that is simply live and love as Waymond exemplifies, vs the nihilism ie. Joy who posits that without meaning why does anything matter? Its a perfect dichotomy and examination of the two philosophies that are almost polar opposites and highlights absurdism (probably one of the lesser known, but my favorite philosophy nonetheless) as a solution.

As an older guy who has experienced - first hand - watching hundreds of movies since the 1960's, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once rises to the top of best edited films of all time. That's no mean feat. I'm so glad it won so many Academy Awards, but am especially glad it won for editing. Without the surgical precision of Paul Roger's edits, this film could have descended into a chaotic mess. And yet it became one of the best films in years.

Early on, Evelyn says her life would've been great if she hadn't married waymond. Then we also see that his life would've turned out great too in that alternate universe (he looked like a CEO or something). But thru fate or luck, their lives would cross paths anyway, and we get that heartfelt scene that reminisced on their marriage in the main universe.

I like to think that eventually, Waymond's take-away from the 'it was beautiful!' part was, "yeah, but you're still sticking with me, no matter how beautiful that life was." I also like to think that's what she comes to believe.
