Aldhelm was speaking the plain truth, his primary loyalty lies with Mercia and he will support whoever he perceives as the best person to lead it. He reminds me a bit of Varys from GoT, in that what he does, he does in the interests of the realm/his country.

It's worth pointing out that in the book, Brida was as mad as both she and Ragnar were in the show at Uhtred leaving put together. Ragnar on the other hand; didn't particularly want to leave his comfy, pretty much impregnable fortress in the first place and recognized that Uhtred wanted to go help Aethelflaed because she was good people (he also knew Aethelflaed as a child so I'd guess there probably was a fair amount of "They want to do *what* to that nice little girl I used to know? Screw that!"). Either way, he was on good terms with Uhtred leaving; disappointed, but ultimately fine with it.

Yeah, one disappointment I had with the books is how Cornwell turned Ragnar boring and pointless. I'm kind of glad they made this change in the show. All book Ragnar did was get fat and die "offscreen", so to speak. HOWEVER, I did like in the books that Ragnar understood that Uhtred had made an oath to Aethelflaed.

@@ms_scribbles A better end for Ragnar in the books would have been nice, but the trouble is that once he killed Kjartan; he was done. All his motivations had been fulfilled. Sister? Rescued and avenged. Money for his followers? Kjartan had a fortune and controlled the all the land for like a day's ride in any direction. A home? Kjartan had a pretty much impregnable fortress. Ragnar didn't have a reason to go fight anyone who wasn't directly attacking him or his people.

@@Caedus696 that means he's a far better execution of that type of character. littlefinger was so plot armoured and so blatantly evil that literally anyone with a brain wouldn't trust him and it got so bad it took a literal offscreen plan to beat him. in the last kingdom Aethelwold is known to everyone to be an untrustworthy schemer and no one trusts him and yet he's still able to manipulate people and events and he actively used the honour system that people in Anglo-Saxon britian followed to survive. he's only defeated due to his own hubris and arrogance which was perfectly set up unlike Littlefinger whose undoing made no sense and wasn't satisfying at all.

Aethelwold is a weasel and you can never trust him but he is an entertaining character. As others have said he is sort of like Littlefinger. I think the actor (Harry McEntire) did a really good job portraying him.

Great reaction as usual! The actor who plays Finan is Mark Rowley. He's Scottish but Finan is Irish 😉 - he does the accent well, in my opinion. He's been in The Spanish Princess, and quite a few British shows/movies. TLK is the first time I've seen him act and he's awesome!

Regarding whether Osferth could be king after Alfred instead of Edward, it is possible. While often the oldest son of the King of Wessex was chosen to reign, it was definitely not always the case. Alfred the 5th son of Æthelwulf (son of Ecgberht, who was related to the brother of a King who reigned 75 years before him) to hold the throne was chosen in history over Æthelwold who did make a claim to the throne. The was in fact an Osferth related to Alfred in history.

tbh I don’t think Sihtric (if that’s how it is spelt) 😂 I don’t think he would have as much of an issue with the rebelling against Alfred as others would, as he is naturally a Dane, and could be easily led back to his roots, as long as he could find a safe place for his family, whereas Finnan, even though not English has more of a connection to Alfred, but has a strong allegiance with Uhtred, so no one really knows how he would react..

Rewatching from the beginning with your reactions is really fun. Something to keep in mind for the show is that the Saxons believe that their king is chosen by God to be God’s King. This tying religion to politics is the reason Beocca feels so strongly about protecting Alfred. As for why Uhtred doesn’t just kill Skade, she has to die in a way that the curse dies with her. Otherwise the curse will live on after her death.

It's true that the Saxon's are the people who settled Wessex, but Mercia is where the Angles settled, the Anglo Saxon's were Germanic tribes that migrated to Brittania/England in the 5th century. So Mercia is made up of another tribe the Angles, they have a lot in common with the Saxon's, but they have different tribal histories and origin's.

A church in the village holds a cross from a since demolished monastery. This episode in particulary shows how good the writing has been up to this point. A lesser show would've depicted either the danes as pure savages and disgusting, unhumane marauders or the saxons as cartoonishly evil conservative zealots (I'm looking at you Vikings). But here both sides are filled with complex characters that tend to be either "good" or "bad" or both (as a lack of a better term). The dilemma Uthred faces is not only his, but also the audiences, as our sympathy is both with the danes and the saxons and just people in general. Notice how in Vikings we've been wanting the Great Heathen Army to strike down on the saxons with as sense of satisfaction, while here it is so much more nuanced and complicated. Funnily enough, Uthred's crew embodies an england as it should be, a band of brothers and sisters of different heritages and believes fighting together to see another day.

the thing is when Uhtred says to Ragnar "there is no bond" there is a truth to the words he speaks and deep down Uhtred i think while he loves Ragnar has always known that his true calling was always bebbanburg and his own lineage and heritage and he always knew that his future was not going to be with the danes. Uhtred and Ragnar's relationship while wholesome and heartwarming at the best of times never forget that Ragnar and his family are the ones responsible for Uhtred's life being so miserable and they started the events that led him to where he's at now Ragnar the younger and Ragnar the fearless killed Uhtred's actual father and brother and i don't think Uhtred never truly forgets that hence why he's always chosen to fight alongside the Saxons and Alfred instead of trying to conquer it with Ragnar. Uhtred suffers from Stockholm syndrome with Ragnar suffering from a massive case of Lima Syndrome most likely due to the fact he longed for a younger brother (odds are that Ragnar's mother couldn't have any more children after Thyra). Ragnar and Brida are just as responsible for Uhtred making the choices he does as much as Alfred,Beocca and Aethelflad are they just can't accept the fact that they weren't Uhtred's ONLY allies they where essentially the toxic friends who wanted him all to themselves and utterly ignored the fact that Uhtred had a life and relationships outside of them. Uhtred forged his own path and Ragnar and brida hated him for it. while i love Uhtred,Ragnar and Brida's trio dymanic season 3 really highlighted the Toxic elements of it and just how much they both Value but also at the same time under value Uhtred. this is why Uhtred as a character utterly blows other similar characters like Jon Snow,Daenerys Targaryen, Ragnar,Lothbrok,Lagertha etc out of the water is because his story is so well written and tragic but he also learns from all of this tragedy unlike the others who are just driven by the plot.

yeah shows like vikings create the awful misconception that the Saxons where utter weaklings when the Last kingdom is much more accurate and says NOPE infact most of the time it was the vikings getting their asses kicked. Vikings utterly ignored the fact that the Saxons where way more battlehardned than the danes ever were considering that they had been fighting britons,scots and the welsh for centuries before the vikings arrived.

Hated that in Vikings, they always made the Saxons seem so stupid and weak and terrible fighters when in fact they were hardcore warriors. Most of the time Vikings did hit and run tactics and usually avoided facing armies or soldiers. The Last Kingdom is more balanced and historically more accurate plus shows a great diversity of warriors from Saxons, Danes, Northmen, Irish, Britons, Welsh and Scots.
