I think what this episode really makes clear is that Jimmy is more responsible for the events of Breaking Bad than it seemed. Walt would have continued to flunk around in the minor leagues but Saul saw "potential" and helped him become what he did. Jimmy really is the main character of this universe and Breaking Bad is almost entirely the result of his coping mechanism (Saul). Absolutely wild swing for them to recontextualize everything but I love it

28:15 So according to Thomas Schnauz who wrote and directed the episode, it's not greed. He said Gene doesn't care at all about the money. Not one bit. He's doing this to numb the pain over what was said to him on the phone. Whatever it was was extremely upsetting. And Schnauz said we will find out in a future episode what the conversation entailed. Probably gonna be something devastating related to Kim.

I love how this episode is such an inversion from what we saw in the BB series; Walt and Jesse providing the comedy relief in the largely dramatic episode about Jimmy falling to his worst habits because of his pain. Its also pretty interesting how essentially all the loose ends of BB/BCS are tied up; everyone prominent from that era is either dead or moved on. Jimmy/Saul/Gene is still the surviving cockroach though; pulling cons and desperately clinging to the one thread from his old life he might have in Kim.

This episode was by far the most depressing, sad, and difficult episode of the series for me. It was honestly similar to Ozymandias in terms of depression and emotional intensity, even though it was much more lowkey in terms of action. I think maybe my favorite thing this episode did was show just how important Saul was to Walt’s success. Without Saul, Walt and Jesse’s business would never have made it past season 2.
@MarkHogan9942 жыл бұрын
Everyone is acting like this is news but we literally knew it all already. In Season 2 of Breaking Bad we see Saul visit Walt at the school to help him go bigger. We see him arrange the first meeting with Gus. Then in Season 3, after Walt briefly quit, we see Saul doing everything he can to get him to start cooking again. So we already knew all that. Without Saul, Walt never would've met Gus, or Mike, or even Todd (Saul was the one who brought in Vamonos Pest).

Aging just happens. And generally people age more noticeably in the 20s-40s gap, as compared to the 50s to 60s gap. So yeah, Aaron Paul looks and sounds a bit older. But his performance and banter with Cranston and Odenkirk is as solid as it ever was, so it really doesn't make a difference to me. Plus, I've been watching BCS for nearly 6 seasons. This is what I know in terms of the timeline: Saul got cleaned in march 2010. Walt died in September 2010. Gene planned the mall heist in October 2010. Gene calls Francesca on November 12th, 2010, and immediately calls Kim after that. Then plans a new scheme to steal target's IDs and credit cards.
@MrAlexkyra2 жыл бұрын
This episode blew my mind. This whole time I thought the Gene story line took place years after the events of Breaking Bad, but it's only been months. At first I thought that the call with Francesca was a flashback, but no, it happens after the Mall Robbery. I read an article that used the football games that the security guard talks about to date Gene's storyline. The mall robbery takes place in October 2010, while Breaking Bad's story ends in September 2010, while Ozymandias took place in March 2010, immediately after which Saul contacts the Vacuum salesman and becomes Gene. The call with Francesca takes place on November 12th (Jimmy's birthday), 2010, only a couple of months after Walter White's death and half a year after Jimmy/Saul becomes Gene. 6 months, that's all the time it took for Jimmy/Saul/Gene to relapse into his addiction to pulling scams. There's no way things are ending well for him.

How can you love something that simply isn’t true? It most certainly is just “hey, here’s Walt and Jesse just because”. It doesn’t add any depth to the story or the characters. Saul talking to Mike in his office and Saul walking to meet the devil himself on the other hand certainly is necessary to the story. But Walt and Jesse cameo is straight up fan service (and a lazy one tbh). They could’ve easily de-aged Aaron Paul a little, but did not do it. Why? I have no idea. It kinda breaks the immersive nature of this show when you have to look at a 41 year old Aaron Paul who certainly didn’t age well trying to act as a 25 year old Jesse Pinkman.

Exactly. These jobs he's pulling with Jeff & "Buddy" aren't even scams or cons, they're just straight up giving people roofies & robbing them blind, there's no "love of the con" at play here. From the way Gene is taking such stupid, unnecessary chances (including teaming up with these two clowns in the first place) it's clear to me that he just doesn't care anymore and I suspect that maybe a part of him even *wants* to get caught.

When Gene hung up the shirt and tie last week, I saw it more as a signature that "Saul Goodman" was here. I think deep down he wants to get caught. He got away with the mall heist and his shirt and tie were a calling card from someone that needs attention. Also I love the song by Mike Nesmith. In Breaking Bad towards the final season, they played an obscure Monkees song while Walt and Jesse "cooked". This time another is playing while Saul is "cooking" up his scheme.

All of the episodes in 6B so far have so much depth that isn't immediately obvious, but wow, ever since episode 7 this show has been on a 10/10 streak, even Nippy which I didn't like at first is genius in retrospect, it set up a perfect "ending" for gene, he pulled off a perfect yet harmless scam to get Jeff off his back, and can go back to living a quiet life, but he just can't help himself. This episode's scam felt so much more impactful and sad because it was contrasted with the last episode's lighthearted scam, makes the mall heist look like child's play compared to this operation gene currently has of drugging innocent people and breaking into their house to steal their identities and sell them in the black market, but it makes perfect sense as this is his coping mechanism, and I think whatever Kim said on that phone call crushed his dreams of getting back with her, the one thing he had left. It makes a lot more sense if you imagine Saul as an alcoholic rather than a scammer, they're both coping mechanisms

A detail I noticed that no one seems to be talking about. There's a bit in this episode where Gene is staring in a daydream at the mixing bowl stirring the mix in Cinnabon. The next scene, he pays Jeff another visit. I think it symbolises Jimmy's knack of always going in circles, never being able to leave the life behind, always going back to it. We understand this already from Chuck's opinion of him. We understand it by the fact that Jimmy became Slippin' Jimmy, who became Viktor, who became Saul, who has now becomes Gene, once again pulling off scams. He'll never settle down. That'll never be the end of his story. His story has to end another way, be it arrested or killed...
@OhhBiscuits2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I've also read a very convincing theory that links the new blue intro sequences to Gene's incabability to move on. He wants more so much that he keeps hoping there's more to the story, only to find nothing left at the 'end of the tape.' This is shown through his phone call to Francesca. He prolongs the phone call, asking more and more mundane questions, hoping for any sort of information at all, but Francesca has nothing to give. So he's creating new tapes, because he just can't stop.

This episode was epic. If for nothing else then getting some BB member berries- even for a few minutes. Having Walt back looking like pre-Heisenberg and having a Jessie “yo” was awesome. The thematic flow of this episode was friggin brilliant. To focus on Jimmy/Saul/Gene in relation to BB was a master stroke. Getting to know what Nov 12th @ 3pm was, was nice closure. And for Francesca too. Kim’s in Florida hmmmmmm. Gotta find out what was said on that pay phone call!! My guess is Kim either got fired and they don’t know where she went or she died somehow and Gene is now in full Saul-like mode once again, if not something far worse. I really hope that shot of Gene in the grave wasn’t foreshadowing. But damn what a shot Love the choice of the future story with Gene being in black and white.
