It's so cool that this episode kinda frames Jimmy McGill as the main character of the entire MCU (methampetamine cinematic universe). That's certainly a very valid read on these shows. Ultimately, I def like to think of it more as the collective saga of key characters, ofc. But still, really cool.

I think what this episode really makes clear is that Jimmy is more responsible for the events of Breaking Bad than it seemed. Walt would have continued to flunk around in the minor leagues but Saul saw "potential" and helped him become what he did. Jimmy really is the main character of this universe and Breaking Bad is almost entirely the result of his coping mechanism (Saul). Absolutely wild swing for them to recontextualize everything but I love it

The one gift that Jimmy has that he's showcased time and time again in both BB and BCS is that he can turn any regular o'l Joe into a seasoned criminal given enough time and practice. 28:15 So according to Thomas Schnauz who wrote and directed the episode, it's not greed. He said Gene doesn't care at all about the money. Not one bit. He's doing this to numb the pain over what was said to him on the phone. Whatever it was was extremely upsetting. And Schnauz said we will find out in a future episode what the conversation entailed. Probably gonna be something devastating related to Kim.

I agree, It definitely doesn't seem like greed, ........but desperation cuz: #1 getting upset over possibly losing ONE target. #2 even going back despite it being hours later with the drugs wearing off at this point. #3 Breaking the glass to get inside, leaving evidence of a break-in. With Jimmy/Saul, their usual crimes/scams was always about being perfect: untraceable and unnoticeable (till its too late).

I love how this episode is such an inversion from what we saw in the BB series; Walt and Jesse providing the comedy relief in the largely dramatic episode about Jimmy falling to his worst habits because of his pain. Its also pretty interesting how essentially all the loose ends of BB/BCS are tied up; everyone prominent from that era is either dead or moved on. Jimmy/Saul/Gene is still the surviving cockroach though; pulling cons and desperately clinging to the one thread from his old life he might have in Kim.

This episode was by far the most depressing, sad, and difficult episode of the series for me. It was honestly similar to Ozymandias in terms of depression and emotional intensity, even though it was much more lowkey in terms of action. I don't know, but Jimmy becoming so soulless because of what happened on the phone is really heartbreaking. Right now it seems all but confirmed that the ending will be very bleak, perhaps bleaker than Breaking Bad's. My guess is life in jail.

@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 I felt like it was bittersweet. Walt always wanted to be remembered fondly by his family. He expresses this a couple times, most notably to Flynn in Season 4 Episode 10. But now he won't be remembered fondly. His family hates him, and Hank died because of him. And on Jesse's side, he lost Andrea and spent 6 months as a slave being tortured. So to me, BB's ending still felt dark. There was a cost.

I think maybe my favorite thing this episode did was show just how important Saul was to Walt’s success. Mike was right, Walt and Jesse were amateurs and would have been caught or killed sooner rather than later. Saul saw an opportunity with their product and was the driving force behind their growth. Without Saul, Walt and Jesse’s business would never have made it past season 2.

Everyone is acting like this is news but we literally knew it all already. In Season 2 of Breaking Bad we see Saul visit Walt at the school to help him go bigger. We see him arrange the first meeting with Gus. Then in Season 3, after Walt briefly quit, we see Saul doing everything he can to get him to start cooking again. So we already knew all that. Without Saul, Walt never would've met Gus, or Mike, or even Todd (Saul was the one who brought in Vamonos Pest).

@@MarkHogan994 I never said we didn’t know it, I just loved how they showed it and really drove that point home. We love Jimmy but Chuck was right about him. And Vince Gilligan always stressed that actions have consequences. I noticed Mark commented that this episode reminded him of Ozymandious-which, not coincidentally, was also the third to last episode before the series finale-of BB. Also Saul referenced Ozymandious while in the stuck van when he told Walt and Jesse, “We don’t want to be found buried in a sandstorm a thousand years from now.”

Bear with me here, you younger people :) Carol Burnett had her own variety show in the 70s. At the beginning of each show, she'd tug on her ear to the camera as a way to say "hi" to her grandmother. In BCS S2E5, Chuck and Rebecca are meeting Jimmy for dinner. Chuck says something about setting up a signal, in case the dinner gets too uncomfortable. Aging just happens. And generally people age more noticeably in the 20s-40s gap, as compared to the 50s to 60s gap. So yeah, Aaron Paul looks and sounds a bit older. But his performance and banter with Cranston and Odenkirk is as solid as it ever was, so it really doesn't make a difference to me. Plus, I've been watching BCS for nearly 6 seasons. I have DEF learned to focus on the performance, and suspend my disbelief for the actors looking older than their characters are by now lol.

This is what I know in terms of the timeline: Saul got cleaned in march 2010. Walt died in September 2010. Gene planned the mall heist in October 2010. Gene calls Francesca on November 12th, 2010, and immediately calls Kim after that. Then plans a new scheme to steal target's IDs and credit cards.

@MrAlexkyra 2 жыл бұрын
This episode blew my mind. This whole time I thought the Gene story line took place years after the events of Breaking Bad, but it's only been months. At first I thought that the call with Francesca was a flashback, but no, it happens after the Mall Robbery. I read an article that used the football games that the security guard talks about to date Gene's storyline. The mall robbery takes place in October 2010, while Breaking Bad's story ends in September 2010, while Ozymandias took place in March 2010, immediately after which Saul contacts the Vacuum salesman and becomes Gene. The call with Francesca takes place on November 12th (Jimmy's birthday), 2010, only a couple of months after Walter White's death and half a year after Jimmy/Saul becomes Gene. 6 months, that's all the time it took for Jimmy/Saul/Gene to relapse into his addiction to pulling scams. There's no way things are ending well for him.

How can you love something that simply isn’t true? It most certainly is just “hey, here’s Walt and Jesse just because”. It doesn’t add any depth to the story or the characters. Saul talking to Mike in his office and Saul walking to meet the devil himself on the other hand certainly is necessary to the story. But Walt and Jesse cameo is straight up fan service (and a lazy one tbh). They could’ve easily de-aged Aaron Paul a little, but did not do it. Why? I have no idea. It kinda breaks the immersive nature of this show when you have to look at a 41 year old Aaron Paul who certainly didn’t age well trying to act as a 25 year old Jesse Pinkman.

Why should they de-age Jesse and not Walt, Mike, Gus, Victor, Hank, Gomez, the cousins, Tuco, Don Eladio or Francesca for that matter. 22:00 - Nobody notices the seals are broken because they're not torn. Gene removes the bottlecap with the seal attached and that can be seen in the montage, and it's possible to do if you tear on the thing hard enough. This didn't mark the return of Saul, nor Jimmy. The color would've come back otherwise. He's not smiling much in that not-so-flashy montage. Nothing about his current racket with Jeff and Buddy is clever like when he was with Kim or as a lawyer, it's actually pretty straightforward: drugging people and then breaking in. Gene-to-Viktor is something... else. A different monster entirely.

After this episode, I saw the hanging up the shirt at the end of the last episode as being symbolic of him giving up Saul, and becoming a much worse person. Saul still objected to things in BB, until being intimidated into doing it by Walt. Now? He IS Walt. He is taking decisive action, despite others who aren't morally willing to do so. And this whole identity theft scam seems very next level compared to the things he'd pull with Marco and later Kim. He's become someone with basically no morals, someone who'll rip off someone with cancer. Cause he just can't change. He has an addiction. Just my view.

I think whatever happened on the phone between Gene and Kim made him truly stop giving a fuck about anything in life. Kim left him cause she knew they were doing terrible things. Now she has seen on the news he was working with the biggest Meth cook ever, 2 DEA agents are missing and presumed dead and now hes trying to call her while on the run. Understandable she would be pissed. Also seeing how nice the guy with cancer was compared to the first guy he scammed shows he has zero empathy or compassion for anybody, including himself. 😭

Exactly. These jobs he's pulling with Jeff & "Buddy" aren't even scams or cons, they're just straight up giving people roofies & robbing them blind, there's no "love of the con" at play here. From the way Gene is taking such stupid, unnecessary chances (including teaming up with these two clowns in the first place) it's clear to me that he just doesn't care anymore and I suspect that maybe a part of him even *wants* to get caught.

When Gene hung up the shirt and tie last week, I saw it more as a signature that "Saul Goodman" was here. I think deep down he wants to get caught. He got away with the mall heist and his shirt and tie were a calling card from someone that needs attention. Also I love the song by Mike Nesmith. In Breaking Bad towards the final season, they played an obscure Monkees song while Walt and Jesse "cooked". This time another is playing while Saul is "cooking" up his scheme.

All of the episodes in 6B so far have so much depth that isn't immediately obvious, but wow, ever since episode 7 this show has been on a 10/10 streak, even Nippy which I didn't like at first is genius in retrospect, it set up a perfect "ending" for gene, he pulled off a perfect yet harmless scam to get Jeff off his back, and can go back to living a quiet life, but he just can't help himself. This episode's scam felt so much more impactful and sad because it was contrasted with the last episode's lighthearted scam, makes the mall heist look like child's play compared to this operation gene currently has of drugging innocent people and breaking into their house to steal their identities and sell them in the black market, but it makes perfect sense as this is his coping mechanism, and I think whatever Kim said on that phone call crushed his dreams of getting back with her, the one thing he had left. It makes a lot more sense if you imagine Saul as an alcoholic rather than a scammer, they're both coping mechanisms

A detail I noticed that no one seems to be talking about. There's a bit in this episode where Gene is staring in a daydream at the mixing bowl stirring the mix in Cinnabon. The next scene, he pays Jeff another visit. I think it symbolises Jimmy's knack of always going in circles, never being able to leave the life behind, always going back to it. We understand this already from Chuck's opinion of him. We understand it by the fact that Jimmy became Slippin' Jimmy, who became Viktor, who became Saul, who has now becomes Gene, once again pulling off scams. He'll never settle down. That'll never be the end of his story. His story has to end another way, be it arrested or killed...
@OhhBiscuits
@OhhBiscuits 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I've also read a very convincing theory that links the new blue intro sequences to Gene's incabability to move on. He wants more so much that he keeps hoping there's more to the story, only to find nothing left at the 'end of the tape.' This is shown through his phone call to Francesca. He prolongs the phone call, asking more and more mundane questions, hoping for any sort of information at all, but Francesca has nothing to give. So he's creating new tapes, because he just can't stop.

This episode was epic. If for nothing else then getting some BB member berries- even for a few minutes. Having Walt back looking like pre-Heisenberg and having a Jessie “yo” was awesome. The thematic flow of this episode was friggin brilliant. To focus on Jimmy/Saul/Gene in relation to BB was a master stroke. Getting to know what Nov 12th @ 3pm was, was nice closure. And for Francesca too. Kim’s in Florida hmmmmmm. Gotta find out what was said on that pay phone call!! My guess is Kim either got fired and they don’t know where she went or she died somehow and Gene is now in full Saul-like mode once again, if not something far worse. I really hope that shot of Gene in the grave wasn’t foreshadowing. But damn what a shot Love the choice of the future story with Gene being in black and white. I don't know, man. We still have two episodes left to go. Maybe I'm naïve, but I'm holding out hope for our precious Jimmy.

Walt’s first episode in Better Call Saul is called Breaking Bad. Saul’s first episode in Breaking Bad is called Better Call Saul.

This is an excerpt from a recent interview by Tom Schnauz: "he's (jimmy) got all this pain. Instead of dealing with it the way that Patrick Fabian's character, Howard Hamlin, did when he thought the death of Chuck was his fault, he went to therapy, he did all this work that helped him through it. All the stuff that Jimmy should be doing, he never did. So he's got all this emotional stuff that he keeps pushing down and pushing down and pushing down, and the more he pushes it down, the more it wants to rise up like a volcano, and he needs to do even worse stuff. You know, it's like, oh, there's a guy with cancer? Oh boy, maybe I'll let this one go. You know what, nope, here's the pain coming up, we're gonna take him down too"

Well the next episode is called Waterworks (as in crying). Maybe Jimmy will finally confront his feelings and deal with them. Maybe too late to fix his mistakes, but it will at least help his soul/psyche.

I love that you kept the title from Nikki before her reaction! I wish I hadn't seen it too, but damn I got chills the moment I read it

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul have insane attention to detail. The RV troubles in the Breaking Bad flashback (which takes place in Breaking Bad 2x08) kind of set up the following episode where they’re stranded in the desert after it breaks down. Truly incredible writing.

it seems clear to me that Gene was absolutely done with the Slippin' Jimmy lifestyle...until he had whatever conversation he had with Kim...it's like whenever he loses Kim, he puts on the Saul Goodman mask to hide his pain. I'm both excited and nervous to see the last 2 episodes of this series. I might cry during the finale. 💙🚐💍🚕

the question is, did he hear something bad FROM Ki or did he hear something bad ABOUT kim.

Great reaction, I loved this episode. The last scene that cuts between Saul entering Walt's school and Gene entering the mark's home is definitely a parallel, both times he made a decision which ultimately led to his downfall later on. The police car tease is a red herring, I don't think Gene will get caught right then and there, but it definitely is going to be the first domino piece to fall and trigger the beginning of the end for him.

That phone call with Kim really pushed Gene back into Saul Goodman mode didn't it?

This cameo was better and more coherent than any of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This episode was amazing. It was so good to see Walt and Jesse again. On the other hand I am really worried about Kim. I hope she is alright. I am very curious about that phone call conversation cuz it looked like Gene got triggered and decided to move back to his old habits. And going after that cancer guy seems very risky and I have a feeling something bad is going to happen. I don't think he is getting away with everything but again there are so many possibilties and different directions this show can take. I am sure the final 2 episodes are going to be insane and I can't wait to find out how they are going to wrap up this amazing series!! 💙🚌💍🚕

“He can’t keep getting away with this” Nikki channeling her inner Jesse on that one. Lol Freudian slip maybe? As far as the cops tho I think maybe it could have been a neighbor who heard the glass break

I saw one reactor saying this episode was better than the last one, and that's the only compliment he can give to it. Couldn't believe it, cause not only was it better, it was so freaking good. Scenes from the BB era weren't fanservice, they are important for us to understand who Jimmy really is (or what kind of monster Chuck/Kim leaving created). In a way I'm not looking forward to the final 2 episodes, cause I don't see anything good coming. I want our Jimmy to stay the sweet Jimmy we once knew.

Loved the Benny Hill reference. The first guy Gene scammed was named Alfred Hawthorne Hill, Benny Hill's real name.
