The non-AI lenses have to be modified to work on the later model Nikons like the FM2n as they have a metal piece that interferes with proper coupling. The Nikon FM can work with both non-AI, AI and AIS lenses with the flip of a little hinge. Non-AI lenses however can be AI'd by a camera technician so they can fit the newer Nikon F cameras

I bought Fotodiox extension tubes, and there was some slop on the lens mount end. I used 3M Scotch 88 (thick) electrical tape to take up the slack. I placed three strips equally around the edge of the ring and used a razor to trim the excess. The lenses go on like silk and there is no wiggle. I bought K&F Concept Nikon to Canon lens adapters for less than $10 each on Ebay. They have leaf springs to tension the lens mount; there is no slop. They work great.

Hi! Thank you for this video. I'd say the only reason to spend more money in an adapter would be to avoid light leaks and reflections...I had a lot of issues with Fotodiox adapters for Nikon (to Sony E Mount) and I had to bite the bullet and spend more for a Novoflex. Have you had any issues with weird internal reflections and leaks?

Nikon lenses are adaptable to more systems because their register distance is longer than most others such as Pentax K, M42, Canon FD, and Minolta MD. If the distance between the back of the lens and the sensor is too much than you can't focus to infinity-only good for close up and macro photography.

I tried mounting the Nikkor-S 35mm F2,8 lens on a Canon 5D2 with a metal adapter. It fits, but does not work properly. The inner part of the rear flange protrudes too much and interferes with the operation of the mirror during shutter actuation. I was lucky this did not cause damage to the mirror. The only way to use this lens would be remove the rear flange and grind down the black protruding arc by about 3mm. I am happy with the adapter ring. Paid about $12 USD (free shipping) from Ebay. The lens fits nice and tight, no wiggles at all, and the finishing is great. I am currently using this adapter with a Nikkor-HC 50mm F2.0. Great lens.

Caleb, I'm shooting on the new Sony FS5 and I have a Canon FD 28mm f2.8; a Nikon 50mm f1.4 AIS and a few other lenses (newer ones like Samyang and Canon L). Dilemma I have is I want to buy a set of primes for video. I've been looking at the Rokinon Xeens but they are $2,500 each, whereas I can probably buy 10 good Nikkors with that much money. How does that glass compare with something like the Xeens? - Also, I usually shoot corporate videos and most of the time by myself, so no need to have a focus puller or anything like that. I'm just thinking how newer lens compare to old vintage as far as will I be losing a lot of detail? sharpness? -- thanks Caleb!

If you can add a sliver of paper to a adapter then the adapter is now off set a sliver which will alter your image plane or focus. Some adapter have a set adjustment to prevent the wiggle of the lock but the camera mount already have springs for mounting. Thats how the plastic lens mount so well. Good thing you do not remove the adapter because the aluminum tabs must wear more with the added force.

@petercheuk901910 жыл бұрын
Some comments: I'm certainly not a Nikon lens expert. Non-AI, AI'd, AI, and AIS lenses all refer to the metering interface of the lens to the camera body. This gives you a rough estimate of when the lens was made. The problem is that Nikon offered a service when they released the AI lenses to convert the non-AI lenses to AI. This was a simple replacement of the aperture ring and didn't affect the lens itself nor it's ability to form an image on film or a sensor. If it was a bad lens before the conversion then it was still a bad lens afterwards. Nikon has stopped doing this quite a few years ago and people convert non-AI lenses to AI (and these are referred to as AI'd lenses) by simply grinding away part of the aperture ring to allow the aperture feeler on the camera body to engage the aperture ring so that the camera can determine where you've set the ring to relative to what the light meter in the camera 'sees'. There was no such conversion done when AIS lenses came out as the changes were internal and really was making the aperture release lever on the back of the lens more linear for modern Nikon cameras that allow for more consistent aperture settings for Program mode or Shutter Priority modes. The next lenses that came out after the AIS lenses were the AF-Nikkors which are probably beyond the scope of this video since they're the more desirable lenses for modern AF DSLRs. The lenses themselves, for the most part, are identical between the non-AI and the newest AIS lenses. Nikon has been making improvements to them over the years. The very earliest lenses lack anti-reflective coatings and later ones are single-coated. The ones to look for are the later multi-coated (SIC) lenses which came out around 1972 while still in the non-AI era. The lack of sharpness wide open can be attributed to either a lack of lens coating or accumulation of dust inside the lens in the image path or both. Avoid the Series E lenses as they were the economy models and the image quality was lacking. Before buying an old Nikon lens keep this in mind: the faster the lens the higher the quality they put into it and this goes for both optical design and build quality. Today's AF lenses are made mostly of plastic while these old lenses are aluminum and steel. Look for online reviews of older Nikon lenses from people who own and use them on a daily basis. Nikon has made some stunningly sharp lenses over the years and some real duds. It's up to you to do the research to avoid the duds.

Hey Caleb ( and anyone else who might have answers for me) I am so damn confused on what prime lens to buy for my new GH4. I have looked at Nikkors to adapt, and people are saying why why why when there are great native lenses, but these are most all fly by wire focus which makes focusing a nightmare especially for repeatable focus. I have also checked out some nice vintage Rokkors which look great. I want something ideally sharp, I like the idea of the Nikkors for great easily compatible glass with future cameras/rentals. If this was you and you needed one decent prime, and $500 to $600 to spend, what would you go with? Thanks for the help! Greatly Appreciated!

Right now I have two camera systems: m43 and E-mount but every lens I have is adapted to canon EF which only proves problematic with canon FD and maybe one or two other exceptions I've faced(soviet start SLR comes to mind). This is because I found that Canon is easy to adapt to even with lenses with AF while still using a focal reducer which is great - I have a ton of canon EF mount lenses now that all share the same lens caps and two canon mount cameras with effective crop factors of 1x and 1.5x(1.06x & 1.42x) and its really made my life simple. Most of my lenses are m42 mount with 1/3rd being Nikon and a few misc like pk etc but just adapting everything makes things super simple(m42/adapters can be found as low as a solar or two from China which is even better).

I have a nikkor 55mm f/2.8 AIS manual lens. I am trying to read the scales for zone focusing. I see the color coded hyperlocal lines for measurement, white in the center gold, blue (or green), orange to the right and left of the white mark. I thought these marks were for matching the color coded apertures but only 11, 22, 32 match the colors mentioned. If I set my aperture to 5.6 or 16, which lines should I be using to measure min and max distances?
@Superbustr9 жыл бұрын
The double colored lines on Nikkor ais lenses ex double orange, blue, gold are there to signify how large your depth of field is. In other words it shows you how much working space you have that is in focus between ex the two orange coloured lines. You should always use the white line on Nikkor ais lenses to set the focus distance. The reason it would only show lines for f11, f22, f32 is because there is not enough room on the lens to put more markers. The area in focus will be so small because of the super shallow depth of field that the colored lines wouldn't show up on such small Nikkor lenses.

Craig Nevermind Depends on the lenses. Lots of ifs and buts. This is the easiest way to check, if you are new to Nikon: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm. thumb rule: _most_ AI and AI-s lens and later ones will all mount on all Digital/film cameras. + You might not get metering (auto/program/aperture/shutter priority -modes) : i.e., your camera cant decide what Aperture/shutter speed to use.

Prasanna thank you. I bought a Nikon 28mm 2.5 wide angle, and it's a lovely lens. I'll be buying more lenses in the future, so I'll use that link. Thanks for replying.

Is there an adapter for micro 4/3 to use with the black magic camera?
***** Hey Caleb, I was wondering will the Nikon manual lens work with the (Metabones Canon EF Lens to BMPCC Speed Booster) if I use it with the Nikon to canon EF Mount. (I have both Canon lens and Nikon Manual but won't want to purchase 2 metabones speed booster. Thanks

daverime It technically will yes. If you do that, be sure to use high quality adapters. The more adapters you use, the higher at risk you are that the lenses won't be as sharp since there could be tiny gaps between the adapters.
