I like the foreshadowing technique a lot, especially on records like Shogun by Trivium, where they start of the first song on the album (Kirisute Gomen) with the chorus melody of the last song (Shogun) cause then you get to see more than one song link into each other with their themes.

Forsaken by As I Lay Dying has a sweet intro with multiple “parts” before they DESTROY you with their killer riff. That and Tim’s scream leads you in nicely too. Song starts slow but kicks in gear over a minute or so.

Try starting with a verse riff and work that into the chorus. That's usually what i do. I focus on the meat and potatoes first lol. Then an intro, breakdown, fills and shit like that usually falls into place pretty easily.

In music theory the "reverse" is called inversion, which was used by Bach a lot. It can also be used at a lead break to change things up. you can also use retrograde, or retrograde inversion as well to keep the listener tuned in.
