That's so wild! Thank you for commenting! Do you still live there? I wish we'd had more time to explore and meet people there. It was incredibly beautiful.

There are allot of famous historic Russian Orthodox churches in Alaska. Alaska was first colonized by the Russians, the first American Saints in the Russian Orthodox Church are from Alaskan, (some Russian, some Native). The Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska has a large history integrating into the Native Population, allot of the Russian Churches up there are in native villages only accessible by boat or plane and are full of Native Alaskan congregation and Native Alaskan Orthodox Priests. You will find the liturgy done in their native languages and probably also English. In Kodiak there is a Russian Orthodox Seminary for Native people. Allot of other famous churches are also depicted in Deadliest catch. (in Fact some may say that Alaska may have the most # of Russian orthodox churches than any other state in America). There are hundreds of photos online of the Many Historic Russian Orthodox Villages in Alaska

Thank you for your insight! I wanted to hop on a bush plane and explore some of the more remote areas of Russian-Alaskans but perhaps next time!

There are lots of native Alaskans that converted to Orthodox Christianity back when Alaska was part of Russia. There are still whole villages that are Orthodox Christian. Some of them are very remote and can only be reached by boat or plane. You should do a video about them! When Alaska was purchased by the United States, the government tried to destroy native culture. Government sponsored protestant missions went to Alaska with the intent of destroying native culture and language, including their Orthodox faith. It was very cruel and abusive. They took children and forced them to live in boarding schools where they were forbidden to practice their faith or speak their language. They were punished with beating and public shaming when they broke one of these rules. There are still well-funded Baptist missionaries trying to proselytize native people. In many places, the native populations have kept their faith and some semblance of their culture and language alive. You should make a video about that.

FYI: none of the locals refer to highways by their numbers. You took the Seward highway south to the junction with the Sterling Highway.

No way! That's awesome, wish I would have known that soon. It's way cooler saying "Seward Highway" instead of "highway 1" 😂

Thank you for making this video. Did you really go on such a long trip to take only this footage? I hope you got more! Strange coincidence that you uploaded a video on such an obscure topic only days after I found out about Nikolaevsk's existence. Fascinating stuff
