It's pretty f'n disgusting to watch this with the tone you present it with, when knowing that the soviet union nuked the crap out of Kazakhstan as a test site. With the radiation and the dust impacting around 1,5 million people in the country and the effects of it still being present to this day.

As much as I agree with that statement, this has been the convenient excuse for sending men to fight in wars that women are not forced to fight. In our current world where women's sense of entitlement to anything afforded to either sex, I refuse to support the pervasive old ideology of male expendability and treating women as royalty.

You know, Eli, during the Second World War (the Great Patriotic War), expeditions of schoolchildren aged 14-17 were sent from Arkhangelsk to Novaya Zemlya. They had to get seal meat and fat there, collect bird eggs, bird meat, fishing, and so on. Books have been written about this in the USSR, and a film was made (it's called "Summer Walk to the Sea"). One of the books was written by Nikolai Vurdov, a member of the first such expedition. Of course, he is not a writer, so his book is more a historical testimony than a literary work. The other one, it's called "Two steps from the war", its author Vadim Frolov, I liked it a little more from the point of view of literature. Only boys participated in the first expedition of schoolchildren to Novaya Zemlya in 1942, but the following year girls also went on the expedition. And one of them was Olga, my grandmother's younger sister.

Very cool! I had a Russian barber here in Phoenix, AZ that served on those TU-95 bombers. Our NATO designation for them were "Bears". The USSR flew them out of Vladivostok and used them to keep track of the U.S. fleet movements in the Pacific. We called the area "Bear Alley". I asked him, as he was gliding a straight razor carefully across my neck, "Did we ever piss you guys off?" His answer? "You would know by now." Thanks for making the video Eli. Thanks Eli for another fascinating, informative and visually stunning video! So interesting to hear from your fellow travellers and a little of their life and work. So too of the locals that you met. Former nuclear testing sites at the Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia, and Maralinga,South Australia are still restricted sites and indigenous people among others still cannot go there. The wildlife in the arctic at Novaya Zemlya is beautiful though the polar bear is fearsome and dangerous! It reminds me of the fearsome white pointer shark inhabiting Western Australian marine waters! Stay safe and keep well, John Lampe, sunny Perth, Western Australia.

@@soundsoflife9549 If you knew anything about the Australian mafia, you would know about the shark captured from the wide open sea and placed in a public oceanarium for paid customers to come see the sea animals. The next day, it regurgitated a human hand. It was so fresh they were able to take fingerprints, and track the guy as a victim of his mafia "buddies." Life can be harsh, especially if you are unaware of your surroundings. So you might benefit from learning what goes on in Australia. Just because you live there today doesn't mean you will be alive there tomorrow. After all, just like the United States, Australia was founded as a dumping off abandonment zone for unwanted British convicts. That's where the national genetics comes from.

That wasn't in 1956, but in 1596 of course. Willem Barentsz led three failed Dutch expeditions to find a Northeast passage to India along the North Pole. During his third expedition he discovered Spitsbergen and Bear Island, but his ship stranded in the arctic ice and he got stuck on Novaya Zemlya (or Nova Zembla as he called it) for almost a year. The Barents Sea is named after him.

I noticed the cooker too. When Eli was driving the boat, she was actually stirring the dinner around that was cooking, not lost as the captain thought. *[skilled lady]*

"OUR FULL POTENTIAL IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF COMFORT." So true. This is one I am going to remember. We know it intuitively but inertia (natural laziness!) often seduces us into losing sight of this profound truth. Thank you for articulating this reality of life in words. It will now be easier to not lose sight of it.

Beautiful video. And yes, our potential as humans lies on the other side of comfort. Well done Eli.
