Korndorf symphony guide: Symphony 2 is an aggressive and heavy classic Symphony 3 is surreal and minimalist Symphony 4 is beyond words

Unbelievable journey from the anxiety-inducing opening to the climax of that string section.

A really peculiar piece! For the first 22 minutes, we hear a stark austere heaven-storming threnody in the style of Schnittke or Kancheli. Then, the mock-funeral march of the Mahler First drops in, followed by snippets of the first movement of Shostakovich’s 9th Symphony, the finale of Haydn’s London Symphony, the finale of Beethoven’s 1st Piano Concerto, and a few other pieces I can’t quite place. This builds up to an irrationally exuberant climax, only to be interrupted by the return of the threnody. Like Albert the Alligator from Walt Kelly’s Pogo says, “It rhymes! It rhymes! But what sense do it make?”

I think there's some Charles Ives in there too.

I tried my best to clean up the muddy sound. I think this symphony falls into the category of being slightly crazy.

I caught a lot of references (Mahler, Shostakovich, etc.) in this bizarre basketweave of polystylism ... Does anyone get a sense of a particular program or -- uh -- intent?
@gloriacoates95012 жыл бұрын
You are right on! It is a polystylism and polystealism of sorts...a collage of various parts of famous works using other instruments and covered over with a cloth of orchestral instruments...an interesting style Korndorf developed in his short life. I think this carpet is the form....which he could change by dividing it or using it in various ways.

What is this background art? Looks like something out of the Hyperion cantos.
