An uncle of mine, who was a professional musician, terrific pianist and organist (and lover of Rachmaninoff's music), once told me this piece is intended to be played by a man to a woman. Talk about romantic!

Students in college, I've heard them play exceptionally or even better than some pros out there. I've seen a person that's not blind, play a whole Liszt Legend with his eyes closed and it was one of the best Legends I've heard today still. The problem was, it was all done in rehearsal and practice. Once on stage, that adrenalin just kicked in and the magic wasn't as refined. Lugansky is great, but it's not true that "everything" is always as good. Not all his live performances are recorded.

I have watched several pianists now playing this which I do as well - but I don't know if my technique is incorrect. I don't start out playing with just the left hand - but using both. It seems to me the music is written on the page as it is to make it obvious which is the melody and which is the accompaniment - not as a direction to play with one hand or the other. I also play a fair amount of the accompaniment with the right hand, reserving the left for the very high and very low notes and a few other spots. Since the right hand is playing two voices soon enough in the piece, I don't think it really matters what body part you use as long as the melody sings with good phrasing. If I am in error, I welcome the feedback.

I don't know, but Lugansky seems to take legato in the melody very "literally", avoiding releasing the keys/relying on pedaling so as to play the notes above the main theme unless he has to. it shows in the video around the 4:00 mark, he does crazy finger switching over and over, one imagines that is his mindset overall. so he'd probably have strong feelings about separating the accompanying between the two hands and whatnot. (or maybe not, who knows.)

This is very fine playing. I personally have very few problems with it. Afterall, We all might play it slightly different but you can't legislate taste. Btw, the RH ord in bar 16 that has an awkward stretch can be successfully overcome by playing the D with the tip of the thumb and the thumb knuckle plays the C sharp next to it by bending it. nice little trick. :)
@mahmoodalfayoumi61508 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for the tip! Was going to just forget about the csharp and just play the d by itself since the csharp was already being played at the top. Of coarse that wasn't a problem for Rachmaninov since his hand was crazy!
@johannsebastianbach34117 жыл бұрын
That is a nice solution, I have always played it with index finger on c sharp and thumb on d, but again, i guess i have large hands :D
@cccpredarmy5 жыл бұрын
I hit the thumb right in the edge where the black csharp meets the d. Since the black key is slopped and the thumb "pillow area" is big, it's enough to hit both keys at once. It's a good way to easy up fingers on high pitch notes which should be played more dominant compared to the others due to melody line. It works, but it needs a little precision practice!

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately I'v been doomed to live a life with tiny little hands but the desire to play pieces with big chords. A lot of learning a new piece for me is figuring out how I can cheat and use other hands and fingers or skip notes when it comes to big chords. I'm trying to learn Le Gibet from Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit and my little hands can't cope with a lot of that piece...

What a lot of drivel about one detail, read the written score sensibly like a sincere performer. It is clear to see. OK to accommodate when a hand cannot cope with a Rachmaninov stretch ! The complex passages are a massive challenge- I struggle!

I disagree, he's very good, but his Rachmaninoff Sonata No. 1 isn't up to par. He's recorded all the Rachmaninoff concertos and the second sonata, so I've been waiting to hear it and heard it live, now I know why it hasn't been recorded. Every pianist has an "off" day too, where the performance just isn't up to par. What I find, that the professionals and the best can do, is make this "off" day less miserable than say the average conservatory student.
@DizzyBusy5 ай бұрын
I'm listening on an earphone and I'm almost convinced Lugansky needs to bring his own recording technician with him. His playing is obviously superb, I've seen him live in two concerts. The recording quality always leaves things to be desired. This one is too low, has a thin middle, no brilliance on top, and no bass oomph. In short, it's meh. Again, I'm just talking about the recording quality, not his playing.

Rubinstein decía que podía hacer más de 1 recital puras notas falsas que daba en cada uno de sus conciertos, me parece que lo importante es el mensaje, la concepción sobre como el entiende la obra, por cierto, es mi interpretación favorita.
