4 is a thrill ride, and 5 is beautiful in its simplicity, but I think my favorite is 1, for the beautiful ways in which the theme is transformed.

Absolutely I came here only knowing 4 and wanting to hear no 4, but I got stopped in my tracks by No 1 tranced in fact. With me starting to learn composing i’m noticing the gap that’s just massive of pure deliberate progression in a piece between Actual composers and me. Although I can make decent melodies and harmony it makes no sense in the grand scheme. But Rach makes it make sense.

I personally like No 1 the most because it has everything, slow lyrical and technical and fast and explosive. I think No 1 is the most underrated and least commonly played of Rachmaninoff Moment Musicals.

#6 paints an image in my head of a man with a huge spirit who has to traverse this cruel earth without it crushing his spirit. And the burts of A section are him fighting back against the modern world, loss of passion, succumbing to the ordinary and rising above the mundane to achieve his full human potential and raise his fellow man and woman to their's as well.

@@cowboytim9882 Great choices! For me, I don't have any particular list. But I feel a strange yet strong connection with Gould. Barenboim is indispensable to me. For Chopin, I tend to like Ohlssohn, Pollini and Zimerman. I consider Uchida absolutely marvelous. Pogorelich is a great choice too (although his older recordings have more stamina). And the Jussen brothers are surprisingly jaw-opening (see their live recording for Poulenc's Concerto or Stravinsky's Rite of Spring). Well, there you go; I made a list too.

Two of my favorites, Lugansky and Kissin, are an interesting comparison. With the former the spontaneous musicality is so evident, perhaps sacrificing some imperfections, while the latter is unearthly scripted perfection, both I consider in the pantheon of greatest keyboard artists.
