".... and no soft pedal; YOU are the soft pedal," what a great piece of advice. The music went from muffled to expressive.

This shows the essence that was Van. He loved music so very deeply and was such a rare, beautiful, sensitive and expressive musician.

Some of us remember him Wayback when he won the Tchikovsky competition. And he became and inspiration to many of us. It is so nice to see that he has spent so many years helping young musicians. The man was an inspiration in one way or another all of his life. God bless him!

Van is an American legend. He knows not the meaning of the word hate, and his transcendental pianism is timeless.

Dear Nikolay, you give wings to your piano. You produce exceptional poetic piano sounds which move and conquere hearts, spirits and souls. Your virtuosity is brilliant and you stand way far among the stars. Long live and may God bless, protect and keep you in His love for ever.

What piece is this?

Horowitz used ALL THREE pedals all the time to create his ever changing palette of colours; that includes the soft pedal. If it was good enough for him...

One of the strangest masterclass I've ever seen. Surely the audience should be witness to an intimate class between a pupil and maestro; not a performance with someone shouting at you from the second row? Just bizarre.

You're downplaying the importance of the lesson here. He's receiving invaluable knowledge from someone he's very lucky to have the opportunity to learn from. I'd be willing to bet nearly all serious classical musicians would listen closely to what he has to say instead of being upset about receiving (very pertinent, practically invaluable) constructive criticism.

Fortunately, Cliburn was never beaten, tortured or killed by Russian youth for being homosexual.

Tom Blancato that's probably because he didn't go to Russia to party but to represent the great art he possessed.

This was in NO WAY a "masterclass". I would have been extremely disappointed had I been Nikolay. "Don't use the soft pedal" was the only practical thing the man said and I disagree with it completely...
@johndoily94076 жыл бұрын
why does Cliburn always sound like a mawkish airhead when he talks?
@breakfastsurreal56504 жыл бұрын
Because you're judgmental.

Omg get rid of the blah blah blah foreign voice in the background

This was a clinic for Russian musicians that was held in Moscow. That "blah blah blah foreign voice" in the background is the interpreter. The student kinda has to understand Cliburn in order to, I don't know, learn.
