I know this is many years late. I am a now retired photographer with the Miami Herald. In addition to all my 35mm film equipment, I also have a large number of cameras in the micro 4/3 Olympus systems. Why am I telling you all of this, because of prices today 2022 & 2023 I have purchased Nikon 1 systems J3, and J4 I find this system which gets lukewarm reviews is a lot of fun to use, and are dirt cheap in the secondary market. Tomorrow I will be receiving a 10-100mm lens the price $143 bucks can't wait for it. Great Review by the way, no B.S just good sense.

Is this good for stills too or it mostly videocentric.

I really enjoy your "1" content, just because no one else is doing that. I'm not going to be buying into the system myself, but I think it's interesting to see what photographers with untraditional systems are doing with them. Kudos.

I just got into the nikon 1 system and I absolutely love it! I want the 70-300mm zoom lens so bad, but I'm hoping to eventually find an amazing deal lol.

Thanks for the video review of the Nikon 1 Nikkor 10-100mm PD Zoom lens. I bought the lens for my Nikon 1 J5. I like the lens. Heavy, but very versatile in the field. Great pictures and video clips!

It's good to see Nikon persevere with the 1 series. Canon's M seems so half arsed by comparison. At least Nikon gives you a respectable range of bodies and glass you can use in most situations. Even under water! Nice vid.

I have this lens on my Nikon 1 V2 camera and enjoy it for stills and video, just used it for the Color the Wind Kite Festival in Clear Lake, Iowa....have also rented and used the telephoto zoom that goes out to 810mm. Would like to try the F1 mount with the V2 camera with the 200 to 500 mm zoom lens and the 2x extender, should make that lens a 1080 mm to 2700 mm zoom lens,,,or with the new lightweight 300mm f4 lens with the 2x extender should make it a 1620 mm lens at f8. I wish Nikon would expand the Nikon 1 line to compete with Micro Four Thirds with a professional weather sealed camera with a viewfinder and a lot of the features of the new D500 and expand the lenses to wide angle of at least 14mm and telephoto to at least 1600 or 1800mm.

THAT'S a lens ! VR in last firmware is incredible ! Stability is excellent. And the low light photography is surprising, it performs better than the F3,5 10-30mm pd zoom in low light. And the zoom, whatever the speed used bas no comparison. But it is heavy 🙃🙃🙃

Nice video, very clear info. The other good thing about this lens is that it can hold filters. There is thread at the end. I am missing that on some of the other nikon 1 serie lenses. a missed oppertunity for nikon. And I am disapointed by the battery life. But overal I am very happy with this lens on my nikon 1 V3.

Just found this video although I researched and found your review of the Nikon 1 system from several years ago when I made my first decision to buy a discounted J1 around 3 years ago. I've added a V1 and several lenses since then. Are you still shooting on the 1 system? I'm all iOS only so for me this was a requirement for video which is mostly what I shoot.

Thank you for this video! I just expanded my 1 Nikkor equipment and I am curious to see where the 1 system is going. I'm a bit concerned Nikon might kill the 1 system, since they did not release the lenses from the DL-cameras for the 1 system, too. There are already rumors, that the DL-cameras might be the end of the Nikon 1...

No more rumours. At CP+ which is THE largest Photography expo in asia. Where mirrorless has the largest marketshare. Nikon 1 had ZERO presence on the floor. Nada 2 old models gathering dust in a pathetic little corner on the way to the toilets. There is no future for Nikon 1.

Do you want to use the FT1 adapter and an F-mount lens or a Nikon 1 series lens? I personally love using the 10mm pancake prime on my V1 for landscapes. :)

I like the video-thanks for the info. Have you tried any FF Nikkor lenses on the 1 system via the adapter? I am thinking of getting the Nikon 1 J5 and the FT adapter then I can use my Nikon lenses such as the 70-300mm VR on it as I already have a D600. Video quality looks pretty good too; what's your opinion?
@jngosselin
@jngosselin 8 жыл бұрын
I've got a J5 with the FT1 adapter and several F mount lenses. Be aware that the J5 (and only the J5) has little incompatibility issues with long focal zoom and telephoto lenses (imaging.nikon.com/lineup/acil/lenses/mount_adapter_ft1/compatibility.htm). My old AF-D 80-200 (1st gen, push pull) and AF-D 80-400 VR work well on it (tripod required !). Most of the third party lenses (Tokina 11-16 2.8 DX, Sigma 18-35 1.8 DX) work well too. I've got only problems with 2 Tamron travel telephoto lenses (18-270 DX, 16-300 DX), on wide and medium angle, no problem. Near 180-200mm and more, the J5 refuses to shoot, even in complete manual modes... FT1 tested without problem with AF-D 50 1.4, AF-D 50 1.8, AF 35, AF-D 24, AF-D 35-70 2.8, AF 35-105 3.5-4.5, AF-S 40 2.8 DX micro (excellent lens for the J5 !), AF-S 18-55 3.5-5.6 DX VRII, AF-P 18-55 3.5-5.6 DX VR. Advantages of the official Nikon FT1 adapter on crappy low-cost adapters : the electronic contacts preserve lenses EXIF information (with lenses with processor, as usual) & a built-in motor to control the lens aperture via the diaphragm pin (on crappy low-cost adapter, you can't use G lenses, you need an aperture ring). Cons of the FT1 : the price... My opinion on J5 : it's a nice device, but it can be frustrating if you like to use a remote shutter (wired or IR) or a gps on your regular DSLR, no expansion port. Only V series have the possibly to have those options. The frustration is also on the way that the device resets some settings after a shoot or a mode change. Example : set a 2 sec delay shutter, shoot, the shutter is back to normal, no delay... I own some crop DSLR (D5500,D90,D7200), the D5500 makes wonderful pictures but they are the same resets after shoot thing, that you don't have on a D90 or a D7200, and that give you the feeling that's a product made for medium consumer users, not advanced users. High ISO is not so great on J5 and Nikon give strange option for automatic ISO. There are Auto800, Auto3200, Auto6400 and many unique ISO settings. Most of the time, I'm on Auto800 (automatically changes between 160 and 800). ISO 800 is great. ISO 1600 is still correct. ISO 3200 is crap. An Auto1600 setting is really missing... Some ISO settings with noise reduction included (NR6400 for example) shoot only in JPEG... So if you shoot in RAW all the time, you can be disappointed when you see not expected JPEG files on your SD-Card. On Nikon's DSLR, there are many picture visualisation options (with EXIF details, etc...), you simply have to press up and down. On J5, you can have a detailed view or a simple view, but not both, you have to choose only way of visualisation on menus. Frustrating... Burst mode shooting on J5 can be frustrating too. The buffer is very small (20 pictures) and can be full very fast (up to 60 pictures/second). But when the buffer is full, the camera is unresponsive during SD card writing... The UHD 2160p video mode is completely useless : 15 fps, this is ridiculous. HD 1080p and 720p video mode are only available is 30 and 60 fps, no cinematographic 24 fps or PAL 25 fps. 17 min maximum in 1080p@30fps, 10 min in 1080p@60fps and 2160p@15fps, 29 min in 720p@30fps, 20 min in 720p@60fps. There is a option an electronic VR for video only, that's crap. The J5 firmware is still in version 1.0, I hope that general ergonomic and performance will be enhanced on newer firmware version. The J5 is globally nice, give good pictures (like a good point&shoot) and controls (like a entry level DSLR), can be found cheap, but you should test it before buying it. Test the (too) expensive V3 who is more flexible and serious than the J5. Now, I use my J5 mostly for timelapses, no worry about the mechanical shutter like classical DSLR. With CX lenses, no worry about diaphragm too, nothing is moving inside during timelapses (with FT1 adapter and F mount lenses with a diaphragm pin and a processor, the pin is moved after each shoot, so there will be mechanical fatigue on adapter or lens one day). Another stupid thing by Nikon, you can't shut-down the J5 screen (to preserve energy from the battery) during timelapses shootings... and the standard battery capacity is very tiny. I made a huge external battery with a 12V motorcycle battery with some electronics (to generate a stable 9V tension) to stay outside and shoot all day long (30s delay to see the 2 tides in a day).

jngosselin Thanks for taking the time to give some very useful information. I will now weigh up my options; if my FF 70300mm VR works well on the J5 via the FT1 adapter that could be a winner, as would using my Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. Here's hoping...

As a Nikon user I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to use my Nikon lenses in combination with a smaller body and especially for video. The J5 offers 4K video recording but unfortunately only in 15 fps. I really don't understand Nikon's policy there. If a feature doesn't work, don't add it.
@koolkutz7
@koolkutz7 8 жыл бұрын
codica666 I totally agree-why not put at least 25/30p for the 4K?! It's a shame as the J5 seems a good little camera. I purchased it with the £200 adapter but sent it back as the continuous sports mode and tracking AF etc don't work so that was my idea gone. Still, I have got the excellent Panasonic Lumix G6 plus theirs and some Olympus lenses which are superb. Worth a look at the MFT system-cracking quality and value for money :-)
@codica666
@codica666 8 жыл бұрын
I suspect that Nikon has been too focussed on DSLRs and lost a lot of ground in the compact camera segment. If someone comes up with a great adapter that makes Nikon glass fully usable with other systems (Sony, Fuji, Panasonic) they might lose a lot of customers. The Nikon adapter is said to be very good (FT-1?) but it ain't really cheap either. They should really show a bit more love for people with a bag full of Nikkor lenses (like myself) - those aren't cheap either ;) Seems like 4K is quite tricky to implement properly. Many manufactorers have issues like overheating. Guess I'll have to wait for the J6...
