I bought it for the fast and good af and the ISO ability. Finally I love it. Really fast. Excellent for sport photography and night photography too. It is not heavy. Sound recording is good. The different modes are enjoyable. The bad thing for me is the kit lens : images are a bit soft, there is no infinity focus and the zoom is too limited. And I seriously miss a real focus assist.

Hi John, thanks for that, I have another issue with the j5 I been out taking photos to upload to an image bank, I see the settings are on high, Why does the image get refused and they say it's only 2. MP? It should be 20mp That's why I bought this, so I take some photos with my good iPhone, they are ok, site accepts those. Please help

Well for video there are far better options but I certainly wouldn't say the camera is a waste of money It's still capabilities in sports and wildlife are amazing, the lens line up is over the top on quality, razor sharp at all settings

Not for sports and action it's not, not even close, the J5 for wildlife/birds and sports makes the 3XXX and 5XXX ranges look pathetic as well as many higher end cameras, in fact the 70-300CX lens is pretty much untouchable for sharpness at all setting (no need to stop down or reduce the zoom etc)

If you have to ask, what is so great about the Nikon 1 J5, you obviously don't need blazingly fast AF, frame rates and a deep buffer any more than an old lady who needs a Hennessey Venom GT to get herself to church on time.

If the new 1" sensor is as good as the RX100's then the J5 will be a great camera. Much cheaper lenses than e mount and micro 4/3, faster continuous autofocus than any other mirrorless, small size, and good price point.

Most of the pic an film shot was NOT shot with the n1 5j simple as that . If you watch close you will see the main camera . The film was shot with the full size cam.

Nikon im from New Zealand too so loved this video i own the d610 and the d3100 with about 11 len's about 6 are all Nikon what i am looking for is a Nikon mirrorless something like this j5 but i want the option to use the len's i have if needed and also i want it to have as good images as my d610 or better lol yeah i don't see the point in down grading my images just for a more compact camera but also i want a more compact camera for those times im unable to carry what i have, do you have any ideas what i should look at getting ? im not into video only stills and i mainly like to do landscapes.

worth every one of the 20 quids i spent on mine. ripped it open a few times to fix the dodgy sdcard slot, will rip open again to add an external mic jack. basicly its just a dirt cheap digital sensor to attach to whatever great 16mm/1" tv lenses you can get

Hello Nikolaj, the Nikon J5 does not have a socket for an external microphone, it is also not fitted with a hot-shoe with which to attach an external flash unit. In relation to using the builtin flash with strobes, this is not an action that Nikon support. The built-in flash is solely for illuminating scenes and not triggering other flash units, it may well trigger external flash units or studio lights, we have not performed testing in this regard with this camera however and it is not an action that we support. We hope this answers your question? If there is a specific type of camera you are looking for, for specific types of photography, let us know and we would be happy to make recommendations.

+Steve C Just buy the F mount lens adapter from Nikon and you can use all of those awesome MF and AF lenses out there. Remember that the focal length on the lenses you use are multiplied by 2.7. Should be sufficient and gets you up to 5x what the 10-100mm (300mm 35mm equivalent) will offer. Enjoy.

Hello there, the Nikon 1 J5 can indeed do astrophotography as it has the "Bulb" setting for long time exposures. You can check page 72-73 of the Nikon 1 J5's Reference Manual - downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/250/Nikon_1_J5.html For more information regarding Astrophotography, you can also check the following article - www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?lang=en_GB&articleNo=000006327 In regards to the lens, we would advise on a lens with a lower aperture, within the 1 Nikkor series, we could advise on the 1 Nikkor 32mm f/1.2 or the 1 Nikkor 18.5mm f/1.8. You also have the option of using some F-mount lenses with your Nikon 1 by using the FT1 adapter. Nikon you really have to sort out the flash. I have a Nikon 1 J4 with the 10-100mm lens. At night when i try to take pictures a shadow always casts over the photo. I increase the exposure compensation but the photo quality becomes worse. Please sort out the flash, I really like the camera and thats really the only problem. I tested the J5 and the flash hasnt been sorted out either. This 10-100mm lens is like the best and I dont really want to keep on changing it because I go car spotting as a hobby. Lets say theres a nice car parked up. I could either 1) Change the lens and take a picture of that and then change it back again thinking maybe another nice car goes past and the zoom not big enough (so i'm there for like a minute taking a photo of the car) or 2) I could just take a photo of the car without the shadow of the lens over about 1/4 of the photo (so im there for less than 10 seconds), and move on quickly to take pictures of other cars. I hope you understand what I mean, thanks.

This is a common issue for compact cameras with built-in flash and this is mentioned in the User Manual on p.79. If you are zoomed right out to the widest angle of the lens with a long lens such as the 10-100, this is a possible issue, but this can be avoided in most cases by zooming in slightly to achieve the correct flash coverage (so there should be no need to adjust your exposure). If this still proves unsatisfactory then another option might be the Nikon 1 V series cameras as you can use external Speedlights with this range and the higher angle that an external flash provides means vignetting from the lens is much less likely.

+Nikon Europe Also it's not a full frame camera, it has a 2,7 crop factor. Which don't only means your 32mm becomes a 86.4mm but that its aperture won't be F1.2 but F3,2. And its 4k video only get you 15fps which is way below video standards. So I don't think this will replace the D5200, although there are pretty good mirrorless competitors from Sony. I think Nikon should give all this information more clearly.

I know this will trigger a lot of people, but five years later, *this is still the camera to go for if you want something truly pocket-able with interchangeable lenses*. An EOS M200 offers 24/25 fps in 4k, sure, but that's still not enough to make it really usable (want 50/60 fps for that), and the interface is too dumbed down and menu-centric. I am far from a Nikon fan-boy but I'm keeping my J5 for now. That's not to say this video is pure cringe.
