Nikon 180-600 Z - First Event - CLE Airshow

Just subscribed! my Z8 is showing up today, and was contemplating ordering the 180-600 for wildlife, surfing, upcoming air shows this summer. Looks to be something worth investing in with the versatility in the focal length vs a prime. Thanks for this video.

I just got mine today and I’m eager to take it out. Won’t get Airshow test until spring but plenty of birds and soccer until then. I’ve got 1.4tc that I’ll try with it as well. Brilliant idea about pano. Can’t believe I never thought of that. I generally delete those so will have to wait for next sneak pass to try it out. Hope I don’t forget

Good stuff. Just the video I was looking for. I too have the Z9 and am thinking of getting the 180-600. I currently have the 200-500 with FTZ adapter. I like the shorter twist throw on the new lens. Definetly "King of the Hill" there man. Keep up the good work.

The only difference would be AF speed. Stick to dynamic area on your Z6/7 and it will still be superior. Along with the cameras ibis and lens sharpness. See my latest video comparing it to the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.

Have you ever shot any air shows with any other z camera? I have a z6 II and I struggled getting sharp focus a lot of times. I couldn't figure out the best focus mode until hallway through. The screen blackout didn't help I'm burst mode. I couldn't stay with the planes. I had you shoot with both eyes open. I saw where some people are using a red dot sight you use on guns and mounting it on the hot shoe. I want to see what will be in the z6 III first but I don't think it will have a stacked sensor. Not at that price point. The ZF is supposed to be announced on 20th of this month. We will find out then. Good video. You're probably the first person to use that lens for an air show.

Hey thanks! Yeah I've used a Canon AE1, F100, D3400, D500 and some with a Z7ii before the Z9. For your blackout lag issue, don't shoot at H+. H+ gives the fastest fps, but gives horrible EVF lag. Just shoot in H. And use Dynamic area AF. You wouldn't have the same tracking to help you as a sports camera that has great auto area (shown in this video) or a DSLRs 3D tracking. You will have to keep the dynamic area AF points on the planes. And it will work fine. Jets I'd recommend 1/2000+ for sharp images. For props to keep the blur of the prop, I'd suggest 1/300. But that takes a lot of practice. I would suggest practicing panning shots at low shutter speeds standing next to a highway or interstate. So you have a ton of subjects and the outcome doesn't matter. Just takes a lot of muscle memory. Twist at your waist and keep your elbows planted at your sides.

I shot the Camarillio air show. It was hot. I used my Z7 ll with the Sigma 150-600 lens. It performed great. Love the air shows..

You should try Normal VR. It is significantly better than Sport VR. Normal VR will be a little jumpy in photos

What do you mean normal VR is significantly better than photos and videos? Using normal mode VR will cause you to miss shots and make it harder to track fast moving planes. And I don't want the EVF to be jumping around when recording video. Makes stabilization a hell of a lot harder in post.

@@MannsWoodlandPerspective Have you tried it in videos, i don't think its too jumpy in videos atleast for flying birds of prey & walking mammals. I haven't been able to test it against a Cheetah running yet so can't comment on that kind of speed at close range. For photos it is jumpy, but it will atleast give 1 stop of advantage in lowlight. Might not be useful for flight shows but for wildlife its a huge advantage for 4.5,5.6 & 6.3 lens in early morning and late evening.

Yes, Planar Tracker is a tracking node used in Fusion in DaVinci Resolve.

I dont get it. If one wants to test the sharpness with such abubdant light, why would you use such slow shutter speed for air craft while using 64 iso ? As a result you got some soft shots, getting only 30 to 40 per cent of good sharp pictures. This doesn't make justice to the lens.

This was never a test for sharpness. I only mentioned that in the same scenario, I didn't really feel the lens was that much better in a sharpness comparison. You shoot slow shutter speeds to blur props and rotors on aircraft. And that tests the ibis+VR combo. Low shutter speeds force you to use the base iso of 64. There's wayyyyy more to a lens then to see how sharp it is. A 40% Keep rate is a lot better than you would get on a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary with a FTZ adapter. Of the 4000 images, maybe 500 shots were at slow shutter speeds. The rest was 1/2000+ for the F18 / F22 / F16 / F15. Even with shots at f/8, about 200 iso and 1/2000. You couldn't do a proper sharpness comparison if you wanted due to atmospheric conditions over hot asphalt, jet exhaust, 90* hazy air. It could easily make a 400 2.8 TC lens look like butter. I was a little dissaponted there wasn't any piston Warbirds flying though.

The Sigma Contemporary is also black, and didn't get as hot. 😏 Materials matter more than the color.. The Nikon is more magnesium and not plastic.
