In this video I put the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S and Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S against each other for a trial by fire of image quality. Which lens would you rather take to the field?

My favorite subjects are Human Portraits and Shallow Depth of Field with my specialty, or claim to fame if you will, being Dramatic Nude and Bodyscape. Over my many years of photography I've mastered many genres but I never stop learning and I don't want you to stop either. That's why I started my KZbin Channel in the year 2020. After a hiatus from photography, I picked up my camera again just in time for the Covid Pandemic. The world shut down. With more time than ever and no humans to photograph I found myself bored but motivated. ZWade Photo, the KZbin Channel, was born.

Oof. You’re a monster for making me choose. By technicality, the 85 f/1.2 is noticeably newer, by that I mean it has less fringing and such just overall technically better, but the 50 is a little more versatile. If I could only have one, I’d choose the 50, but the 85 is really a hair better rendering overall. Grasping at straws and I might change my mind later lol

Great video bud, I have been wanting to add a 35 to my kit, but have a hard time justifying purchasing it because of the 24-70 2.8s. The stairs photo looks super different on the 24-70, like its shot with a wide angle...maybe its because of the vignette, but I prefer the looks of the 50 more, its waaay more real to me and appealing. Thanks for the vid.

Both on my future purchase list: 24-70 (and rest of 2.8 trinity) needs to come first (have the f/4s)…but I know I’d love the 50 1.2 (have the 1.8) a slowly but surely!

I think they are two totally different comparisons each worthy of their own videos. Primes vs zooms are an interesting comparison with modern optics. There are definitely some 50 vs 50 out there for ya 👌👌 thanks for watching

Nice video. People it's a fair comparison. He's comparing the quality between them. And both are excellent. And regarding about "lenses not being as fun" I think that's not true. They are even more fun because you will get consistent excellent results. And the primes have that special sauce. Especially the 1.2 ones. I think it's just that when you do photography so long, you don't get that fresh excitement as you used to in the beginning. Maybe? Lol. Fun video btw☺️

Back in the day you chose a lens based on warmth or cool, sharpness, skin tones, speed, etc etc. Now, you buy the focal length you can afford. because it’s all good. Hardly any research necessary anymore because they all kick ass hahahahaha

Again a hard decision-to buy the 24-70 f/2.8? To buy the 50 1.2? To buy the 85 1.2??? (Owning the 50 1.2 Voigtlander, 50!1.8 z, the 85 mm 1.4 G and the 24-70 f/4)… I am a landscape photographer mainly and occasionally I shoot video(and some stills) events…

I’m about to trade my 24-70 2.8 for the 50 1.2. Is just the tote of sitting I want to do. Flexibility is nice, but the depth of the 1.2 would help the portrait and talking head type videos I make.

You'll love it. I'm all primes now. The flexibility is cool, but that's the only advantage the 24-70 2.8 has. The 50 1.2 beat it in everything else. haha color, character, etc etc. Since I don't care about size and weight, I rock the 85 1.2 as well. I've got the 135 Plena and as soon as the 35 1.2 is here, I'm on that too. I don't know what else not only need, but want.

Actually yes. Then I’ll do 70-200 vs 85 1.2, because both are excellent options for portraits so why not? Also I don’t see how 50mm and 24-70 are vastly different as far as what you can do with them. No you don’t lol not with IBIS, the shutter speeds I’m shooting at and not trying to make a Z lens flare it shoot into low contrast scenes.

@@ZWadePhoto IBIS is not some magic that equalises your every movement! If you are shooting handheld then angles will be different. If you are shooting high shutter speeds then iso will not be optimal so you are adding another variable, noise. Using a tripod ensures the same angle and allows you to use base iso. Not using a lens hood when we we can see direct sunlight on the lens is a sure way to reduce contrast and ensure that the contrast is variable since, being hand held, the light angle on the lens will be different.

@@dominiclester3232 Well I didn’t describe IBIS as a catch all or magic lol. But with IBIS, the shutter speeds I used with good light allowing for low ISO, I’m very confident in the comparison AS shot. If you disagree with it, I respect that. We are having fun over here with “fairly” stable testing, not diving into petapixel charts.

Whew! I thought I was late to the 150 celebration! Well, I added my like. Your work is inspirational to me. I'm a total amateur, but want the best gear I can get. I started with the kit 24-70/4, then the 70-200/2.8, and I've been saving for the 24-70/2.8. After that, I've been digging that 50/1.2, so it was nice to see a comparison of my next two lenses. 😊
