Look at the scene in front of you. Then raise your camera and look at the scene through the viewfinder. If the scene looks the same size through the viewfinder as what you see without, then we can say that your lens/sensor combination produces an equivalent 50mm focal length. That is why 50mm lens are called 'normal' focal length lenses. It is the perfect focal length if you had to choose just one prime focus lens because it mimics what we see through our own eyes. Now, to achieve 50mm focal length with an APS-C camera, we need to use a 35mm lens. The 1.5 crop factor multiplies the 35mm by 1.5 times. (ok, to 52.5mm but close enough). If you are shooting with a full frame DSLR or a 35MM film camera, then a 50mm prime lens is what you need to achieve that 'normal' 50mm focal length focal length. Of course, you may prefer the small telephoto effect of shooting with a 50mm lens on an APS-C camera and that's fine too, but you can learn a lot and develop your skills hugely as a photographer by shooting 50mm focal length ..such as the reviewed 35mm f/1.8 lend here fitted to an APS-C camera. I hope that makes sense.

I own both (plus the 85mm 1.8). For general photography, the 35mm is a better option (due to its wider focal length). However, when it comes to taking portraits, they’re not even close. Both the 50mm and 85mm are FAR superior to the 35mm.

for medium to med/long distance portraits you are correct, but for close ups with an APS-C camera, the 50mm and 85mm distort the face too much. 35mm on an APS-C does not because it translates to a 'normal' focal length. So don't throw the 35mm away just yet :)

I believe everyone having crop sensor should go for 35 mm as it gives you desired result , you can crop the frame after clicking and get the 50MM result. Trust me go for 35 mm not 50. @dr.franxx4 жыл бұрын
actually, the 35mm is for Apsc while 50mm is for full frame. when you multiply 35 to 1.5 you get around 50s, that's where you get apsc equivalent on full frame. because full frame is like 1:1 while apsc 1:1.5 (nikon) so when you try to find full frame equivalent for 70mm on apsc, you divide 70 by 1.5 its around 46 and the closest lens is 50mm or 55mm. basically, when you use 50mm lens on apsc, your picture will look like when you use 70mm on full frame

Dr. FranXX but if the lens says 35mm DX, will it show up as a full frame 35mm would on a full frame camera, or like a 50mm would on a full frame? What i try to say is: Is the ”DX” mark on a lens changing anything, or is it changing the focal length in relative to full frame?

I would say with prime lens and photography, your pictures are going to have more of a style. When I used zoom (kit lens) all of them were different, but with prime it is more of a harmonious look when you look at all pictures, personally I love 35mm 1.8g(nikon), even self portraits are beautiful, you do not have to have your camera that far from you, but you still need a tripod for self portraits. But but prime lens you have to use your legs as zoom, that is not a problem with me. I wished I had money for 35mm 1.4 or 1.2, but 1.8 is great too, much better than kit lens. If you have the money, get it, it is not heavy, but before you decide, google the images that are shoot with 35mm 1.8g, and see if you like it.
