Yes, the long focus throw makes it slow to focus, but that's just the nature of this lens....that focus throw let's you have really sharp focus while doing macro photography. I really believe this to be one of the best lenses Nikon has ever made. Also...there's no need for a lens hood, that's another +1 in my book lol.

Tremendous review Dave, those portraits turned out so well, very flattering and the colour rendition feels very true to life. I just finished repairing mine I got online, wherw the aperture wasn't changing. Turned out to be a somewhat simple fix, the aperture lever wasn't set from the previous owners cleaning job. Good thing about these vintage lenses is the potential to repair or save them, and having the opportunity to see the insides of this lens and how well it's constructed really makes me appreciate the design. Plus it's so light! Can't wait to get out and use it.

Not really. I still have a D40x that gets some use for product photos and a D810 that I have pretty much turned into a streaming camera. For me, the EVF sells the mirrorless to me. The adapted lenses is a perk, but I like the native Nikkor glass good enough that it is not a requirement. The EVF brings so much to the table for me that I just use them now. It allows me to see the scene as it will be captured...or very near what it will look like and I can also see what the captured image looks like in the EVF as well, without needing my glasses. It just makes shooting so much easier for me. I do take the D810 out occasionally for landscape and such from time to time though. 👍📸

So of the 55-60mm micro Nikkors which have you tried and which one do you like best primarily for walk around/portrait and secondary macro? I just scored a mint 55 2.8 AI-S out of Japan but also looking at the 60 2.8D. I hear the G version is good but the gelded lenses won’t adapt so probably will pass on it.
@davidsaylors3 жыл бұрын
I have owned both and kept the 60mm for just the reason you mentioned. The 60mm autofocuses s as well for as added bonus. I would recommend that one of you want macro as a secondary. Although the 60mm is just fine in this regard too 👍📸

@@davidsaylors The 55 just got delivered so will give it a twirl. The 60 is 1:1 so i might have a use case for the AF-D version. Not buying more G glass for same reason you elude to.

This is probably one of nikkors sharpest. But from what ive read, this lens is notorious in having aperture stuck, due to lubricant creeping into the blades. Can you confirm this?
@davidsaylors3 жыл бұрын
It is an incredible little lens. Mine works perfectly, I have not seen any problems with the aperture on mine thus far. I will be honest though, if you are a person that gets stressed when the corners are not razor sharp (some people do) then maybe vintage glass is not for you. This lens has very few defects in image quality that I can find, but modern glass is just plain better. The improvements are quantifiable and very real. But if you like playing with vintage lenses, get one in good shape and have fun. 👍📸

As a general purpose walk around lens a 35mm f2 AIS is superior. The 55mm is too tight for wide shots but gives the added benefit of being able to shoot super close up shots which could be of benefit for certain subjects like flowers.

David Saylors I’m looking for a 55mm micro and I’m torn between the 2.8 and the 3.5. The price difference is quite a bit and I suppose the wider aperture isn’t going to make a huge difference as I’m going to use it for macro and using a tripod.
