A 7 year old video that is hands down the best review of this Nikon legacy lens. Convinced me that the older used 70-200mm is what I need to target to keep the cost point within budget. Update: I just bought this lens today (Gray).

For How much?
@Mr_D555 Жыл бұрын
@@TiboDeRycke $835 for a like new lens which was high but I wanted the Tropical Gray. So people know the black lens is the same as the gray, 100% the same except for the color. A like new black lens is selling for around $500.

@@Mr_D555 Thanks for the reply Dennis, sounds like a good deal if your happy with it! :) what device do you use it on? because i have a z6 and i dont know if it will work with the adapter. I have a 70-200 with a broken autofocus motor (got it for free from a friend) i'm wondering if its worth the repair of 450 euro's in your opionen. Do you like the lens a lot? and why did u chose it over the VR2
@Mr_D555 Жыл бұрын
@@TiboDeRycke I have a Nikon D700 and D3, haven't used it too much yet but so far a great leans. My research pointed to the VR2 not being better than the VR1 for general use and additional cost. Also the VR2 doesn't come in Tropical Gray.

@@Mr_D555 I just bought it at 100€, yes 100€. A bargain hard to believe. The seller wanted to gift it to someone because he said that the lens is old (some scratch) although the optical quality is good (no dust, no fungus). I couldn't believe it I have also the old push-pull 80-200 f/2.8. The push-pull mechanism doesn't bother me because this version shares the same optical quality as the 2 versions that came after (AF-D one ring, AF-D two ring). Great video, incredibly useful. I'd add one more alternative zoom that I've had good luck with and that is the Nikon 70-210 f4 constant aperture zoom. It is less commonly seen because Nikon only produced them for about 18 months, and is often confused with the 70-210 f4-5.6. It is a two-ring zoom with fantastic build quality and reasonable autofocus speed. Available second hand here in the U.S. for usually $150.

I agree with every word said regarding this excellent piece of glass. Having previously owned it prior to changing systems, It was my first consideration when moving back to Nikon. This is possibly THE most informative review that I have seen relating to this lens, my advice: do NOT take any heed of the biased reviews on the internet from many of the American, high profile gurus, they lie, and for good reason... kickbacks, if there I’d one American Nikon lens reviewer to be trusted on Nikon glass it is “the angry photographer” who mirrors every word that this reviewer offers. In short I love this amazing lens, yes it tugs on the arms after a while carrying it, but if that is a problem to you... Go to the gym. Excellent, objective and accurate review.

This is a brilliant review and I enjoyed all 40 minutes of it. I hope you are still responding to comments on your older videos, because I have a big decision to make. I own a wonderful Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens, which is incredibly sharp and fast, but I want to switch to the lens you reviewed, just because I want to use the Nikon TC-20E III on the lens. Is this a reasonable decision? Ditching a perfectly fine lens from 2012 for a lens from 2003?

Great review! I have owned the original VR model of this lens for about 10 years. In various other reviews I read so much criticism of the softness in the corners, and that it was only really good on DX cameras, that I thought seriously about selling it and getting the newer one when I moved to FX models. You have convinced me to stay with a lens that I love. I have never been able to actually see any softness in the corners on my FX cameras - with the stuff I shoot the corners are part of the background which I don't want sharp anyway.

Did you notice something like this or it is faulty you think?

Never thought I'd get to this point in life, but I am damned willing to put myself in debt just to get this lens. Cheapest I've seen this lens on eBay is between $700-800, in auctions that started low and had few participants. I've already replaced one failing 18-55mm kit lens with the Sigma 17-50, I've bought a Sigma 105mm Macro w/ OS, and I've bought an 85mm f/1.8. Just over $1K on my Credit Line. Now, after reading up on reviews about the Sigma and Tamron varients and comparing them to the Nikkor... Fuck it. I'm gonna be in some hella debt, but I sure as hell am gonna work my way out of it. If I have to work myself ragged between two full-time jobs and fill all of my free time with small odd-and-end photo jobs, it'll be well *well worth it!* I just pray my D5000 doesn't die out before I begin to master the use of these lenses...

I realise I am very late to this party :) just got a d500 and am looking for a 70-200 f2.8 and its a choice between the VR1 and VR2 used. I will use it for wildlife and motorsport. I shop at LCE and they have both used available with a difference in price of about £100 to 200. So which do I buy and what about people's reports of focus breathing on the V2?
@jklenses86112 жыл бұрын
For the (relatively) small difference in price I would go for the VR2 simply because it will be a younger lens. Availability of things like SWM mechs for lenses of this era is getting steadily worse as these parts are no longer made by Nikon. My VR1 has done nearly twenty years of faultless service but it always pays to look to the future... In actual usage I'm confident that both lenses will get the job done for you but others may have more experience with the VR2 than me... :-)

What about the 70-210 f/4?
@Narwaro6 жыл бұрын
I am one of these crazy specialty lens users. I do not regard zooms very highly because glass is not really all that transparent so the less glass the better but this seems pretty nice for its 20+ elements. I mostly shoot birds on crop with the 200-500 and some nature, products and portraits. And I actually think that most contemporary lenses are rubbish (105 1.4) and people demand it. When you take a 200 f4 your eyes fall out when you look at the RAWs and they are more vivid than your own eyes see it. In comparison, most modern lenses look like flat profiles for cinematographers.

Thinking of picking up a TC14 mainly for outdoor wild life, on a crop sensor to go with my 70-200f2.8...Thoughts regarding quality degradation?
@jklenses86117 жыл бұрын
I've used this combo quite often with my 70-200 when you need a bit more reach. Since it basically uses just the central area of the image to simulate an increase in focal length, there really isn't any noticeable drop in quality. Depth of field is reduced which may or may not suit your purposes. The only down side is it's quite pricey and you may be able to get similar results by just cropping the final image afterwards, given the quality of images from modern DSLR bodies. Definitely a recommended accessory for me with this lens.
@kmulhall82337 жыл бұрын
JKLenses thanks for the feedback it's greatly appreciated. The resale market on EBay for example, has TCs listed for less than full retail in, many cases, for second hand examples. @jklenses86118 жыл бұрын
+saul gonzalez I’d be surprised if you were able to see any major improvements in image quality by upgrading from the f4 to f2.8 versions. The major benefits would be the extra stop which would extend your isolating ability and an all-metal professional build quality. If these two things are likely to make a big difference to the pics which you take then the upgrade might be worth it, although the fact that you bought the f4 in the first place suggests otherwise! J I’m always a fan of buying lenses to solve a particular problem or do a particular job so unless you can find particular things in your pics with the f4 which would be improved by the f2.8 then I’d be tempted to stick with the f4. A compromise might be a secondhand VR1 model of the f2.8 although like all the great Nikon lenses they seem to hold their price a bit too well when you are thinking of buying L Thanks for your comment and hope this helps…
@saulgonzalez38048 жыл бұрын

In my view, all that later versions of this lens have done is help to reduce the price of this version on the second-hand market :-) I have been using this lens heavily for over fifteen years and its picture quality is only ever edged out by the very best Nikon prime lenses. The initial grumble when it was released that it was too pricey has now gone. If money is tight then this is stand-out value for money and I'm certainly managing fine without VR II! Can't imagine how you would be disappointed by this lens... :-)

Best of any zoom in this range, I would say and not quite as dreamy as the Nikon primes at these focal lengths.! :-)

So I recently purchased a copy of the 70-200 vri, and im having an... interesting problem. The focus isnt quite functioning correctly. When i try to close focus with the lens, it will get stuck at the close focus spot on the lens, and continue trying to focus in that direction. It will sometimes slowly turn the manual focus ring. I can only assume this is not good. I purchased it from KEH.com, and their rating said it was in the "excellent" category (80-89% of what it is from new) and clearly states in their description it should be working perfectly. I have already emailed them and I am waiting for a reply. I was just curious if you have heard of this issue before? Thank you.

+Joel Williams I haven't heard of this behaviour and mine doesn't do it. I would continue working with the supplier as your item clearly isn't as it should be...

interesting that canon produces two 70-200 f2.8. One has the L and one does not.
