Excellent review, as you’ve repeatedly delivered. My two cents or pence: having started photography in the 1970s, it’s amazing to me that this zoom range exists much less at this image quality. Kudos to the engineers. I just don’t care for the sub 24mm field of view. It feels almost like trick photography.

Excellent review on the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. You really broke down the pros and cons of this lens. Honorable mention in your conclusion on the 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 zoom. I just recently purchased this zoom for my Nikon D3500 in excellent used condition and it can hold its own against the 24-70mm f2.8 at a substantially lower price.

Thorough test and explanation of the different use models. Well done and keep continuing this! One remark, for limited budgets it would be nice to have other brands at least mentioned, which could work as alternative. I have see many videos comparing lenses, but budget can not always be the decision criteria - I hope :-). Sharing professional experiences with different lenses used (and qualities/prices) may help to avoid spending too much money.

Firstly, Who were the 9 people who didn't like this? why? WOW what a great review, that you for your time and effort! an absolute gem of a superb video, and then some. As a landscape photographer and owner of the Nikon 16-35 f/4 - coupled to the D750, I originally didn't choose this lens due to the filter issues (more expensive kit needed to mount my grads etc) , but I've gotten into night sky photography and thought, you know what, this is the lens I need for that genre, subsequently I'll probably invest in the LEE filters kit for this lens and maybe i time sell the 16-35. This review is just phenomenal, missed nothing.

Excellent review of this lens...WELL DONE. I just bought a used model and can't wait for it to arrive. The only downside as mentioned by you and other reviewers is the inability to use filters, especially graduated ND ones for landscapes. As you stated, there are aftermarket adapters but there is the adapter, $$, then just one filter is over $200 USD.

Hello ! I do agree your comments about that marvelous lens. I use it regularely for landscapes and architecture. I find it very efficient when you have few "retreat". Before I used to shoot with a tilt & shift PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED, very efficient to correct distorsion of perspective. But its use was much more complicated (tripod, manual set of focus). . With 14+24, its much more simple, and I correct distorsion with Lr or Ps. One defect you do not mention is flare. It becomes important and quickly alterations of image become so important you cannot correct them. When I use this lens, I take care to have the source of light really in my back and I put one hand or a small shield to stop rays of light. But it is a common defect on all wide angles lenses. Thank you for the quality of your rewiews.

Hello JK, great review by the way. I just watched the 24-70 and this one, very good. I would like to know if you've heard about the Nikon 20mm f 1.8 recently on the market, what about it? Here from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean I thank You a hope see soon the others Videos of the 24-70 and 70-200, both I have it, but the UWA I am maybe to buy the 16-35mm f/4 for my D810. For my D7100 I have the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, but I been hearing that this is better for DX cams and not so for the FX.
@jklenses8611
@jklenses8611 10 жыл бұрын
Very many thanks for your comments :-). On DX format Nikons I have used the excellent Nikon 12-24 which does a very good job although I know several people who get great results from the Tokina 11-16 so I think you'd be OK with either one. Both these lenses are for DX format cameras only as they don't cover the full FX sensor area. 24-70 f2.8 review is almost done and should be out in the next few days...

@jklenses8611

Dave Allen My 70-200 f2.8 is a VRI version and I think it's a fabulous lens. For the subjects which I shoot it regularly produces photos which rival almost any prime lens and is a delight to use. I've borrowed a VRII for a bit and it does appear to be a bit faster, gives slightly better images and an extra stop of VR (which isn't much use to me). If I was buying now I can guarantee that you wouldn't be disappointed with a VRI and this would obviously mean a lot less money. If you can afford the VRII that's great but if you need good value for money I think a decent secondhand VRI is much better value. Full review to follow... :-)

Interesting review. You said on a number of occasions that the converging verticals in the examples were being caused by large buildings, far away. But I would say that most of the effect in those pictures was from the camera not being horizontal. On a lens like this, a very capable rectilinear lens, when the lens is horizontal then verticals will not converge. It is tilting the camera back at an angle to the subject that causes the converging effect.

Sir, excellent and informative reviews. I especially like your advice on alternatives for those of us who cannot afford the "Holy Trinity" lenses. Have you done Part 3 yet on the telephoto? I cannot seem to find it. Another question. I'm coming from a DX system to FX and have the Nikon 12-24 DX lens. As you may know, this lens covers full frame from about 18mm to 24mm with a constant aperture of f4. I've shot it on my F100 film camera down to 18mm and it looks okay to me, and useful as a wide angle. I do not have an FX digital body to try it on though. I've got a chance to pick up a 20mm f2.8 AF-d at a good price under $300 US. Aside from size and weight, do you think there is anything to be gained by going that route, or would you just shoot the DX lens at 18-20mm first? Do you think the 20mm prime would be better? My thought was that i could also use the 20mm as a short normal lens on my DX camera, coming in at around 30mm. Your thoughts? Thanks.

Hi. My principle is to buy new lenses when your existing ones can't do the job at hand. It sounds as though the excellent 12-24 DX lens is doing a good job down to 16mm on FX... If you're not happy with its results then the smaller, cheaper and simpler 20mm f2.8 will provide excellent results at this focal length but will not get down to 18mm. It will also do a great job as a pretend 30mm on DX. The 20mm is great but if the 12-24 'isn't broke, don't fix it..!' :-)

At 13:30 don't agree. Even at 14mm, if at 2.8 I can get quite noticeable blur in the background, definitely at 24mm and 2.8. Those examples looked like f/16 near the rocks...Otherwise good review, agreed it does have natural bokeh.

@Davidevgen 9 жыл бұрын
TeK RaVeN what do you mean by worth it over the nikon 14 by 24? isnt that what you were wanting to get? well anyways yes its defiantly worth it! the only draw back for me is the sun flare at around 18mm and back. but other than that its a premium ultra sharp lens imo. but if the sunflare bothers you there is a anather lens by tamron its a 15 by 30 ive seen great reviews on that lens its doesnt have the sunflare like the nikon and has VR. its also cheaper. 1400 new. but its a mm short and a plastic construction vs a metal.

I recently bought a Nikon d610 with a sigma 12-24mm and was extremely disappointed with the sigmas performance . Edge blur was a real issue and af was very poor . Thank you for this review. I'm thinking of getting the 24mm f1.4. But with the ISO of todays camera as you mentioned, I may regret not having a wider choice when taking a shot e.g. the light house photo of yours.
@jklenses8611
@jklenses8611 10 жыл бұрын
I think that's the key point - you need to decide whether you want a wide angle lens (in which case 24mm should do) or an ultra-wide lens (in which case you may need to head down below 20mm or so). The 24/1.4 also has the advantage of being able to isolate subjects to a certain extent, which is quite unusual at this focal length.

Great review. I've been trying to decide between this lens and the Nikon 16-35 f4. The only thing about this 14-24 I do not like is the lack of protection to the lens. The VR would come in handy when shooting video to reduce the camera shake. I already own the other Two lenses of the trinity along with my D810. Nikon is having a pretty good sale on some of their lenses and both of these are on the list :-) B7H has $260 off the cost of the 16-35 & $200 off the 14-24. I did read somewhere that the 16-35 has a plastic barrel, but is it flimsy? Thank's :-)

Hi. I'd go for the 14-24 if funds allow but the 16-35/4 is an excellent Plan B. Many people seem to find this filter system: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1026082-REG/fotodiox_wdpnab150_kit_nk1424_wonderpana_absolute_150_kit.html a good way to provide some protection for the exposed front element of the 14-24. :-)

JKLenses It's me again. LOL I just watched Matt Granger's review comparing the Nikon 14-24 against the Tamron 15-30 2.8 VR and the Tamron is looking pretty good, never thought I'd say that about a Tamron lens. LOL Check out his video and get back with me. Thanks.

Thanks for putting all this effort into such a well put together and detailed video. I have the other two in the trinity and have a Sigma 10-20 and although I like it, it does have its issues. Your video is very good food for thought. :-)

Hello, JK, I was wondering whether your review of the 70-200mm f/2.8 is in the works. Not that I need it as I have owned the lens for 2-3 years, but it's nice to watch/listen to your videos. And don't be discouraged by the relatively few views - most people like superficial, useless short reviews, the unboxing type. Make yourself a nice new year.

They do manufacture some of these in Japan. Not for every model though. They actually call it " light grey ". I just looked on the Yodobashi camera website, but, could not see any listed . www.yodobashi.com

I have too often LOST time bravely watching 3-6-min perfectly useless videos by people trying in vain to make themselves interesting. Here I have just GAINED 35 minutes of my time, watching a very informative and well documented video which makes the lens interesting. Thanks an awful lot, JK…

Thank you so much for this series. I'm getting the 14-24 and 24-70, but instead of 70-200 I'm getting 80-400. I know it's not as sharp, but I do need the extra range and I cannot afford another lens to reach that range.

I have a d800. Not sure about your model but you can select crop sensor mode in the d800 so a 200mm would get you closer (300m or more). Really depends on what's your tolerance to noise and how bad you need to print.

hi I am using Nikon D7100 camera. 14-24 f2.8 is good choice for me?
@jklenses8611
@jklenses8611 10 жыл бұрын
Hi. The D7100 has a DX format sensor rather than the FX for which the 14-24 was designed. Although the 14-24 will work fine on the D7100 it will behave as though it was a 21-36mm lens as you will only be using the central part of the image from this lens. For a wide-angle zoom in the DX format I would go for the very good 12-24 f4 which gave me very good results for several years or the later update from Nikon, the 10-24 f3.5-4.5. Although not quite up to the quality of the 14-24 they are much smaller, lighter and cheaper and will give you excellent pictures on your D7100. Hope this helps... :-)

Even on DX the 14-24mm is a winner, as one day you will go full frame! DX lenses no longer hold their value like they used to. I supplement my 14-24 with an 8mm samyang manual prime (cheap) for that extra reach. Great review too ! :)

G'dayFenil, I have the d7100 and purchased the Nikkor 14-24mm lens as well as the 150W Lee filter kit to go with it. The lens works fantastic on my d7100, but the reason why I purchased this lens in the first place is because I will be updating to a full frame camera at a later date.

tell me, how do you deal with the filter, I have this lens but i struggle with not being able to place filters in front of it. My second question, is being able calculate the hyper focal lens on this lens, when shooting landscape i want everything sharp focus and i dont mange it with this lens. I dont understand why Nikon did not include the measurement like they did in the 17-35mm I have been tempted to swap lens just for that reason and being to put filters on it. Your suggestion are very welcome!

Great review. That front element is pure lens porn. Such an engineering feat considering the very narrow 44mm mount. Versus 55 on a Z lense.

Thanks for this great, concise video! You convinced me! I just purchased if used from ebay for $1,449 from a reputable seller I did business with before, a few scratches on the hood, but the glass is perfect! I can't wait to use it!! I just switched over from a DX to FX camera and was going to do prime lens but I always loved zooms! And this sounds too good to pass up! Thanks!! Btw, any thoughts on the Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens?

I own 2 of these lenses for my business. I love them EXCEPT anytime bright light crosses the front element from the side. The specular flaring is horrible. Little translucent balls on every solid colored surface. It drives me batty.

You are dead on; you have to be aware, visualize, and manage light sources with these lenses. I also own 2 of them, and i see no practical reason to replace them until something goes awfully awry, which, based on their build quality, might be well past the effective lifespan of DSLR's vs new mirrorless kit. I am quite fond of mine, as well as the 24-70 f2.8 VR and 70-200 f2.8 VR (original version). All continue to do an excellent job, and i see no reason to 'upgrade' when there is little difference.
