The "heat wave" effect is a natural phenomenom called mirage, with rising heat causing image distortion. It is just that the higher zoom picks up the mirage.

Yes you can! In the video menu you can set autofocus mode for single AF or continuos AF. I use single AF as it does not continuously try to focus thus sometimes losing focus. With single AF you can focus yourself and the focus stays fixed.

Actually, at long distances and with such level of zooooom, light refraction through the air should be more noticeable since it always happens, even if ambient temperature is, say *medium*... so that "heatwave effect" is just that and probably nothing to do with zoom mechanics.

I’ve had this camera for years and haven’t been able to figure out how to do a multiple exposure shots. I’m pretty sure the programming is there, I just don’t know where to find it in the menu.

i've had this camera about a week and i love it, but it's not without it's flaws .. he's right about the autofocus, but depends what you want out of it, i mean, i use the manual focus on everything, using the side toggle, press center button to get a close up of you subject, quickly focus, snap picture, you can quickly and intuitively adjust the shutter speed and aperture on the fly, a utilitarian 'slide' indicates 'correct' exposure .. the zoom is a bit clunky in it's operation, when ..

He was just giving us an example. He said the same problem occurred in all of his tests, which means not just that one. You should check the beginning of the video where he films the boat because you can see there it still happens.

ok so im trying to decide on this camera or another one i have a coupld of points that i wanna get out there. 1 if your basing your camera on taking video y not get a VIDEO camera 2 if you wana get a gps go get a GPS 3 most of the features you spoke about in the video are comparable to a dlsr and once again if you wana dlsr get one 4 if your planning on shooting at zoom levels with video of course its going to become out of focus This camera would be verry good in my opinion for taking pictures

Interested in this camera but need good video capability for videoing aircraft. Up to the task or not ? The zoom sounds noisy in action on other reviews but the main concern is loss of focus on zoom in / out , no good when trying to capture a 380 airbus coming toward you from a mile away, or are the reviews harsh ?

You haven't mentioned about the battery. How long does it last on a single charge in exclusive image mode and in video shooting modes (separately)? Where does p510 stand when compared to hx100v & 200v in terms of battery?

What's your thoughts about shooting coins with the 510? Especially dimes? Can you use macro mode while zoomed in? I'm pretty confident you can just asking. I have this cam on my list. An entry level DSLR with a macro lens will set me back $700 + or -.

Pretty sure that at 6:16 you're seeing CMOS jello, not the OIS at play. Very common failing with this type of sensor.

At 6:10 you mention a "heat wave effect" being caused by the IS. You do realize that at 1000mm focal length, it is very rare to have a clear enough day to take a sharp shot at infinity, and that these heat waves are actually caused by the atmosphere?

I use this camera alot whenever i film. It's a great camera but the auto focus is like filming while drunk and high at the same time. The low light sensitivity is too much for the camera to manage, but it's a great camera, no doubt. Depending on the camera from Sony, both NIkon and Sony have their ups and downs. Honestly I feel like Canon has the best cameras, but that's just me. Still it is a great camera.

Nikon P520< Fuji SL 1000( 50X) < Canon SX 50< sONY DSC HX300. For me the best is now Sony with 1300 mm but in past I was dreaming about Canon..I wonder what Olympus and Nikon will do - because they stay far away back in the lens competition. One good thing is that Nikon P510 and 520 got very very good filming mode. But not ultrasonic motor or couldn't take on filters :(

Actually there is nothing wrong with the camera in the Video mode. If you use a memory Card that is of Class 6 or less, then the video image gets out of focus every 20 or 30 seconds. But f you use Class 10 SDHC Memory card then the periodic blurring disappears. Please try that and if you agree, remove the comments about blurring in the video mode from your review.

You should try taking more video's but not at a hockey game with marked up glass that gave the auto focus too many things to focus on. In My experience at hockey games all cameras struggle with the auto focus when there is glass or plexy in between you and the action you are trying to film. For trial runs try a football game or Basketball, any sport or fast paced action without filming trough anything unless you are willing to manual focus.

This camera with MOV movies, is incompatible with the Movie Market. There is no way to edit the film (cut, paste, etc.). The converters allow market failures in the movies.
