I have the p1000 and I love it. It will not replace your full frame camera anytime soon (photos are very noisy even at base iso) but 4K @ 3000mm? No camera can beat that. And stabilisation is also very impressive. I just play around with mine and I can get reasonably good video @ 3000mm with no shake. Awesome toy, especially for birds and wildlife at great distance

The Nikon Coolpix P950 and P1000 were two bridge cameras that I compared along with the Sony RX10 IV. After researching and reading countless reviews I went with the Song RX10 IV. The extreme 125x zoom (24 - 3000mm) on the P1000 many of the reviews conveyed the at the long range end of the lens the quality suffered to the point of almost unacceptable. The P950 had many comments to it's short comings on low light issues. So I ended up buying the Sony RX10 IV which is way more pricing but the Zeiss lens at 24 - 600mm 2.4 -4 was in line with what I was looking for in a bridge camera. And the speed of the RX10 IV and raving fans of the autofocus. The whole concept of a bridge camera is unique in that It offers a reaching zoom but does compromise on the fact that the one and only lens it has is it - there isn't any options. Great review of the P950. Oh - your sense of humor is spot on !

I actually use a COOLPIX L840 with its 38X optical zoom an 4X digital (of which I have found that using up to 2X digital can yield decent results if needed). It's an okay camera, but good cheap fun for $100 US.

Nice video , I own a canon cropped sensor DSLR camera, I want to upgrade my setup for bird and wildlife photography but for that a minimum of 400mm lens is needed which is as costly as Nikon P 950,should I consider purchasing a new lens or this camera. What would you suggest?

If you don't mind the larger size and weight, the Nikon P1000 is a little more expensive and with a 24 mm to 3000mm (35mm equivalent) instead of 24-2000mm (35 equivalent). It is a better choice. The difference between 2000mm and 3000mm is huge. I have the older P900 with 24 mm to 2000mm (35 equivalent) like the updated P950. Only with daylight you can shoot handheld at 2000mm without high ISO noise. With a cloudy weather at 2000mm a tripod is essential for noise free photos. A monopod is more than necessary with such a camera. Despite the large size and weight of P950 and P1000 cameras, their sensors is really small 1/2.3 inch type. A typical sensor size of most small pocket digital cameras. That of course won't deliver the equal image quality of APS-C or full frame sensors. The P900, P950, P1000 are more a marketing trick than cameras with real super telephoto lenses.It is easy to achieve very narrow angle of view with very small sensors. If you spent double the money buy a Sony a7 full frame camera with the Sigma 150-600mm full frame lens and the sigma MC-11. Afterwards you can crop with similar quality of the P950.

Guys l have a p900 and am looking to upgrade due to raw and 4K, currently the p900 is doing all l need as a family camera of HD video of soccer games no issues etc however l am stuck between the Sony cyber shot 10 IV and Nikon P950. I have seen a lot of reviews and all call out the larger sensor of Sony however when l look at the quality shots of your gallery and other professional using the P950 and l think wow they are as good as Sony to naked eye. Am l missing something here in my uneducated viewing as l am low end of amateur by the way. The Sony is awesome and it’s fantastic with 1 inch sensor too, however both cameras do great shots and hard to tell the difference to an amateur like me. After seeing what you did with the P950 gallery, l think the p950 is amazing and comparable to Sony, the P950 had some great shots and the clarity is amazing at distance. What is your recommendation as the price point is large here between the cameras considering the visual result to my naked eye to justify Sony. Happy to shell out if you think that Sony is better bang for buck but l look at the overall results and they see similar am l missing something here? Appreciate your thoughts….

Thanks. I have a Samsung Galaxy S8, It has a lot of features to take photographs.... Technology : Quick>>>> Shoot+Edit with filters +Share. But with my old 1/2.3" sensor Canon Bridge (SX530HS), I explored deeper the world of digital photography, my bridge made me love more spending time, compose and take photographs. I used films cameras before and a bunch of point and shoot. But this little Canon was the key. I take better photographs with the bridge than my smartphone. The sensor size was not a problem for me at that time Using the bridge made understand photography and after, I was able to use better the pro features of my smartphone. My wife has the same smartphone, and she's always complaining "how are you able to take better photo with the same cellphone than me"... She used to check my settings JAJAJAJA My experience... A- Smartphone Photography is Quick... is selfie,... you are in a rush to post on social medias for quick views and likes... You can't slow down when you are looking for a lot of views My last trip in Havana, I saw a lot of people taking selfies, but have NO clues of the places, the sites there were visiting, don't ask them the name, the story of the cathedral behind their faces... they don't know... B- Digital Camera Photography is a long process, you need to have time, interest and money (I must admit it's an expensive hobby). A real photographer takes time to compose, take and edit the shot... Of course, most of them will tell more about the cathedral... they know they have to tell a story of their shots , if asked... Does it have spot metering? A camera of that quality should have spot metering. I have a Canon that was much cheaper and it has spot metering. Really need to know.

I enjoyed your review thoroughly! I have a Nikon Coolpix B500 with a 40x zoom. However, it’s only 40x or 900mm for moon mode. Otherwise, for bird watching or in auto mode, it’s only 440mm. How about the p950 or p900? What focal length can you get for bird watching? Thanks so much for the review. You’re pretty funny too!

The B500 is equivalent to 900mm at 40x zoom. I have a B700 which is 1440mm and a P950 which is 2000mm. I've used a B500 and it was tricky to use not having an evf and the stabilization is pretty bad compared to the other two. The P950 is great but expensive.Heavier too. Not as good battery life. The B700 i've used 3 days before changing the battery. The P950 has better dynamic range though and i've had sharp images at full zoom. But you cant beat the B700 for value. Its a step up from the B500 but i had to find a second hand one on Ebay. If you have the money and don't mind the weight hands down the p950 is the best. All these cameras are best used in good light though. Had some very bad results on murky days.

I think calling it a "compact" camera is a bit of stretch. The body is considerably larger than my Pentax K5! Should be a great camera to take on a safari where carrying around a DSLR and a bunch of lenses would be difficult. I hate using those powered zooms though, simply takes too long to frame the picture.

My dad has the P900. It's a solid camera but the problem are: - only jpg - no full control in Manual mode If it would let me control the shutter, ISO, Focus and Aperture, that would be an instant buy for me. Imagine doing astrophotography with this! I guess we all can only hope.

I once carried a 1000mm mirror lens up the stairs of the lighthouse on the Dutch island of Ameland, put on a 2x teleconverter, screwed that onto my Praktica MTL3b and took a picture of the churchtower of Marrum on the mainland. The day after I received the developed film back I sold the lens and the teleconverter. That day my photography started to improve dramatically. 2000mm is probably the most useless focal length for a lens I could think of. I'd rather book physics lessons by Conspiracy Chris than buy one of those again.

Your statement is how we fix what is wrong with the 950. Put the computational power of a smartphone in it and fix much of the sensor's shortcomings. 1:2/3rds is useless to me. I shot with a camera like this and couldn't take the crop and poor low light performance, and returned the camera and am back to APS-C. Forget I don't have the long zoom. The novelty of reach for me is not worth sacrificing my everyday needs at much closer focal ranges. Your mileage may vary.

@@asub3292 But the thing is, the earth is accelerating up at 9.8m/s squared. Thus "gravity" exists. Because of this light appears to bend and fall to the earth. Much as if you throw a ball in a straight trajectory it will eventually hit the ground. Light has a similar trajectory to said ball, except because it's lighter and faster it can go much further distances before it hits the ground, in addition, our eyes can only see the light once it hits our eyes, we cannot see the flight path of the light particle as it's flying towards us (IE, we don't see the light particles of objects that are too far away and hit the ground before they hit us). If we could only see the end point of a thrown ball, all thrown balls would appear as though they hit the ground unless they were thrown close enough to hit us, does this prove that the earth is round? no.

P1000 can shoot at its widest 24mm equivalent (when measured diagonally in JPEG or RAW developed in Lightroom), but if you develop RAW in any other software such as RawTherapee, you can get up to 20mm equivalent wide image. Of course it will have black corners(I even like this artistic effect sometimes), but they are not very noticeable. Even after cropping the photo stays at about 21mm equivalent, what is much wider than by default 24mm. Always shoot in RAW to increase the useful resolution of your photos. Yes! Otherwise the photos are digitally zoomed, what is decreasing the visual acuity. I believe the same trick may work for p950 the same way.

Love watching your channel you guys are so insightful humorous and you guys are very inventive with the way you produce your videos. It's such a shame that Nikon, Canon and Sony continue to make the superzooms with tiny sensors. I can't wait till they go to a micro four-thirds superzoom. I have owned Nikon Canon Fuji Panasonic superzooms and sadly none of them deliver for Quality whether it's a raw file or a JPEG and the rolling shutter is terrible even on a good fluid head tripod the pictures typically are disappointing. I'm praying and crossing my fingers that Panasonic and perhaps Olympus will come out with a micro 4/3 super zoom with Better stabilization better options for 4K video mic Jack touchscreen all of that good stuff a lot of us would pay the money for if they just built something with a biggest sensor better. Optics what's going on it's 2020..?

I appreciate that you mentioned it, the best use of this camera is for shooting small objects at close range that leads to the subject filling the frame. So many reviews shoot objects a mile away to show how close it looks in the viewfinder or photo. Of course, the pictures are terrible. This camera is so good for shooting frame-filled small birds and other small wildlife that are virtually impossible to get otherwise without cropping.

Love this camera! Incredible zoom that’s beyond fun, and great quality! Went to Yellowstone National Park and was able to photograph a Bald Eagle from over a mile away. Would have needed a much more expensive camera with lots of attachments to be able to take a similar photos and videos. The P950 is fun to play around with. Good review Chris. I have had the P900 for a while now and I am still astounded at the quality of both pics & HD vid it is capable of capturing. As you said, it likes light... and in good light I think it is a phenomenal camera and at its current price point... an absolute steel! I also have a Panasonic G7 and a Sony a6500, both also excellent cameras in their own right but I still break out the P900 more often than not because of the huge range of the lens as well as some very capable macro functionality.

The future of hyperzooms - bigger sensor: 1/1.7" at least. Faster lens - those are big already, we can dig bigger but faster. And computensional algorithms from Google Pixel to get those composite DNG files. And then we'll talk.
