Nikon Coolscan Mirror Cleaning

This is a quick way to clean the mirror in a Nikon Coolscan. The procedure described in the video takes practice and can be difficult to complete the first time. You risk damaging the mirror or components in the scanner, or getting dirt on the mirror when it is put back in the scanner. Use at your own risk. Professional service is recommended.
You also need to be careful about the plastic front cover. It is a good idea to remove it after removing the metal case. Be careful not to break the plastic clips on the front cover, they break very easily. Be sure to mount the mirror with the reflecting side facing against the slide mount and LED head
The scanner in the video is the Nikon Coolscan IV (LS-40) but it works similar for the Nikon Coolscan V (LS-50), Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 and Nikon Super Coolscan 5000

Nice video. Thanks. Hey, I've been scanning using a Coolscan V ED and VueScan Pro software. I accidentally left the scanner powered on all night. When I noticed it on this morning, I turned it off for a few minutes and tried to start scanning again. But, the scanner won't Scan or Preview when I hit the buttons. Do I need to reset something?

No, powering on and off should be enough. Check at the scanner starts up, and the green LED light becomes steady. First after it is steady you can launch Vuescan. Then check that it detects the scanner. Then it should be ready for scanning.

@@NUMB3RL3SS No just close Vuescan, but do it before turning off the scanner, then it will keep the settings til next time.

Thanks for showing the lube and NOT where to put it. And not being clear which way the mirror goes back in.

The subtitles explains it. The mirror must be mounted with the reflecting side facing the slide bay. The lube is for lubricationg the rails.

Putting the mirror with your bare fingers didn't affect the cleaning you just did? 😪

No, but it takes some practice. Only touch it on the sides (it is quite thick), do not touch the metallic surface. If you want to be more sure you can dissamble the scanner, but this will take much more time.
