From the first minute that it came out I always wanted a Nikon D 200! But I did not have the $1500 to pay for it. It is now 2021 and I can afford the camera now. I bought a nice clean example for $120. Patience is indeed a virtue.

What a camera, it's 2016 and these are going for next to nothing and they are built like a fine watch. OK, the camera is 10 years old and it is 10MP but there is nothing wrong with that. The camera is worlds better built than most of the cameras produced today. Considering this unit was originally 1.5 thousand originally and now can be purchased for a 10th of that is absolutely amazing. Snap one up before they are gone...you will not be sorry. And finally, great video Nick. Thanks for the great overview.

+Tom Massey I'm guilty of hunting for a D200 but hearing that at iso 800 things get grainy maybe a D300 might be a better choice. I'm really just wanting the camera to be programmable for use with manual focus AI lenses and the D200 is one of them that has the capability.
@NickHurst19879 жыл бұрын
+Bob Jimenez, Also very true. It's older technology so higher ISO's do get very grainy very fast. But with the wider aperture lenses you can pick up cheaper (especially is you get the older style AF lenses where the AF is driven by the camera) it's less of an issue unless you are planning on mostly shooting in darker situations.
@garypowell3758 жыл бұрын
+Bob Jimenez I have a d3300 but with a lot of older lenses. A knowledgable friend suggested the d200. Most of the reviews say the d300 is better for reasons you can look up. I did a lot of reading and concluded that for my budget price the d200 was fine. I was able to pick one up with 12k clicks for 135 dollars is good to very good shape. I love the camera for all the reasons Nick mentions. One of the questions I still had was how much difference I would see between the 24 mp and this 10. Recently I took the camera out and with a 75 to 150 the color and sharpness is really quite good. The pictures look respectable at 2x on a 32 inch 1080p. Two more things... First.. I can't put my finger on it but it seems like there is something qualitative about the color that is nicer. (maybe warmer?) The second thing is that besides liking the feel of the camera I relax more and don't get uptight about just taking the camera everywhere with me. I have not tried all my lens on the camera but a 50 dollar 75 to 150 is a surprisingly nice combo. Thanks for the review by the way, I am still learning some of the features and this was helpful

I was considering buying D90 or D200. I took D200 and I can exactly remember the moment I felt it's superb build quality an than I pressed shutter release and D200 reacted soo instantly, like it knew exactly what I want to do. I had previously D60 and it was also fast, like all DSLR of course, but D200 was just incredible. Now I don;t even look at tiny D90 or anything like that. With D200 or higher models you actually feel like a photographer.

I'm glad you found it useful. A major pro to using this camera to learn with and that is that it has all the controls on the outside of the body such as ISO, metering, white balance and focus selection. Which means you'll actually be more inclined to use them as you don't have to dig through menus to get to what you need. Plus having the twin dials for aperture and shutter speed makes using the camera in manual focus mode easy The only con I ever had with the camera was it's weight and size.

Thanks Nick, I enjoyed this video even nine years on, and it taught me a few things about my new camera. I bought one a few months ago (April 2022) to replace a Nikon D3100 which I'd bought brand new in 2021 (I kid you not). It had a shutter count of 1800 and it's no exaggeration to say it was almost like new. It cost me £90. It certainly raises your game when you learn how to use it, in a way the D3100 never could. The feel of it in your hands is a world away from an entry level camera like the D3100. I use it with a Nikon 18-70 DX lens and a Tamron 70-300 DX macro. I think I need to get hold of a fast prime lens to see what it can really do.

Hey there, what lens have you got? On the video mine could go down to F1.8 because that is what my lens could do. It was a 35mm F1.8-F22 lens. If your lenses maximum aperture is F4.5 then that's all the camera will go to. Hope that helps.

Seems like a good option as a starter lens. It will give you a decent working range. Because the camera is a DX format camera (i.e. 1.5x crop of full frame) this will give you a real range of 27-105mm which encompasses 35,50 and 85 (which are 3 of the best shooting ranges). Seems like a good idea to me, just bear in mind that you won't be getting much bokeh with this lens (i.e. shallow depth of field) which I know a lot of people like. But it will make for a great useful lens - good thinking.

@NickHurst198710 жыл бұрын
Someone wrote on here that you can buy a D2x for the same price, then removed their comment? My response to that very good question is as follows: I've never owned a D2X but I have briefly used one and whilst it does have very quick response times, extremely fast auto-focus and superb construction (so superb it could be used as a sledge hammer head) it's also EXTREMELY (Read: Oh my god my arm is falling off!) heavy and large. Personally I would take the D200 over it which is still a big, hefty, well built camera with an almost identical feature set. I believe the D2X was primarily aimed at professional photographers who couldn't afford FX format but needed something solid. D200 will be more than enough for most users. Good comment though and certainly an alternative :)

Glenfetish Hey there, after owning the D200 mentioned in this video I actually brought a D5100. After being very disappointed with it (I just didn't get on with it), I sold it and brought a D90 which I have to say is a brilliant camera. I own three D200s...love that body. I also own the pro-body D2H....very similar to the D2X, and yes, it weighs a TON! I use it mainly for sports photography, but a monopod is almost a necessity for the weight of that camera, especially once you mount a long lens (300mm or longer). I loved your video -- so nice to find someone to actually go through all of the awesome features of the D200. Thanks! (I also own several of the consumer-level Nikons...D5000s, D3000, D50.) Although easy to use for most anyone, I highly recommend the D200 for photographers who want more than just a fancy point-and-shoot camera.

Glad to hear it Sjur, it's a great camera and like you've said works a treat and will auto-focus with pretty much any Nikon lens from any era (unlike most of the new models that only work with AF-S lenses). I would imagine an 85mm would almost be a short telephoto lens on this camera (due to the crop factor of DX would be around 125mm right?) which would be brilliant for candid portraits. Beautful bokeh at 1.4 also.

Hey Joshua, There are two answers here. You need to be in either Manual mode or shutter priority (turn the knob on the left of the camera to M or S). Then in manual mode, turn the wheel on the front of the camera. The wheel on the back changes the aperture. In shutter priority mode, turn the wheel on the back of the camera. The wheel on the front does exposure compensation. Hope this helps,

Hey Adey, I'm glad you liked the review. I'm not all that knowledgeable on that Canon but I know that Nikon low light performance back in 2006 (when these were in production) was far better than Canon equivalents. The Canon maxes out at ISO 800 whereas the Nikon goes up to 3200. Not that you'd want to use 3200 but I bet the Nikon will be sharper at 800 than the Canon is. Other than that they are very similar cameras tbh. So depends on price / what lenses you want.

Most everything I've been looking at is use through Amazon though, and it looks like I could pick that one up for around $100.
@NickHurst198711 жыл бұрын
Hey there, you're absolutely right, even though a D3100 is an "entry level" camera it's still got about 6 years of technology on the D200 and you will be loosing both pixels (14mp vs 10mp) and ISO quality as the D3100 will go cleanly to a little above ISO1000 whereas D200 is 800 max really. However with the D200 you'd be gaining in other areas like usability and weather sealing. A real upgrade (in all aspects including sensor quality) would be a D7000/D7100. Big step up in cost though.
@ropeyarn11 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add that what you get with the D200 is a commercial quality build that pros paid $1700 for a few years ago. It balances well with Nikon's bigger lenses and the viewfinder is big and bright.

Move forward years later we have batteries that are 2650mAH compared to the 1500mAH standard which would give you nearly double the battery life and be able to charge via USB. I miss the D200 and with all this new software this camera can actually out perform some cameras today specifically in the color department from the CCD sensor. Aside from very high iso which if you have the lenses doesn't matter, I mean a 50mm 1.8 only cost $100 you'd be shooting low light easily at 800 iso, boost in post and denoise.
@INDIGOBLUE5554 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's true... D200 still is my camera and it fulfills my needs in most respects. Of course if you're a professional photographer a better performance in low light can be desirable,especially if large size prints are required. Not my condition,so no need for an upgrade from my tough D200 !

I sold mine with battery grip and 2 batteries for around 270EUR so I would say it's a little overpriced if it's just the body. However if it's got low actuation's (the amount of shots it's taken) then it might be worthwhile. I suggest ask how many shots the camera has taken, if it's low then buy it if you're after a pro-style body. Alternatively you could buy a newer consumer body like a D3100 or D5100 which are going for good money as new versions of each have just come out.

Great review Nick, I'm considering upgrading from a D3100 to a second hand D200 but I'm worried that I'll actually lose image quality and ISO performance even though its a much higher end camera because of the older sensor. Do you think the fact that this was a much higher end body will mean it can still out perform a D3100 even with it's age ? cheers.
