Here's several reasons why someone looking for a great buy right now in camera bodies may want to take a look at the amazing Nikon D300. I used mine professionally for several years for Family Portraits, Engagement Portraits, Pre-Bridals, Wedding Photography and even Jewelry & Small Product Photography.

I know this is an older video, but the D300 is still great. I just got one to use as a spare body along with my D700, which is still a fantastic camera. The D300 has the same control layout, uses the same cards, and the same battery and battery grip as the D700. Best of all, I just purchased one in super shape with 30k clicks on it for $80, shipping included.

You asked me to check this video out after I commented on your Do You Really Need Full Frame video. Okay this video is just plain awesome. I wish more people went back and reviewed products that are older but could still have a place somewhere. I have a D500 but I still like to use my D300 a lot. It's always like an old familiar friend since I've carried it for 9 years. BTW your photos are awesome.

A few years ago I got a fantastic deal for a d300S, the body had only 10 shutter count, it was basic brand new in a opened box I paid around 400$ and I still love this camera to this day! Of course id love to have the D500 or the sony A9, but for what I am able to do with the D300S I can not justify the extra expense.

The Nikon D300s adds a movie function to the D300 camera. It is only 720p but if you desire that functionality I recommend looking for that model. I purchased one last summer with only a 7,240 shutter count for $280.00. A wonderful camera that I use in conjunction with my D500. I love them both and really appreciate the build quality of these units. Plus, the photos are phenomenal, how can one beat that.

I have been shooting point and shoot for many years and finally decided to move of up to DSLR. I selected the d300 because it looked to be just before Nikon went to video, which I didn't need. I still shoot a manual Nikon fe and so I like the fact that I can use all my old film lenses on this camera. I am very impressed and satisfied by this camera. I saved a substantial amount as well buying a used camera.

Nice to see some D300 disciples on here... still love mine, still chugging along flawlessly... and I do a sports shoot pretty much every weekend (triathlons/cycling/fell-running etc). Aside from the obvious- prob' the best feature over lower end cameras is the AF fine tune- I couldn't live without it- regularly shooting in poor light/wide open- so AF accuracy is more critical...

In January 2014 I replaced my D300 with the D7100. The D300 sat in an extra camera bag until Dec 2015 when I had it infrared converted. From 2008-Jan 2014 I shot thousands of images with it and really enjoyed it. It's one hell of a camera!

My D60 broke six months ago and I replaced it with a used D300 (paid $200.00). I am very happy and I may purchase a Used 700 (for full frame). I see no reason to spend $2000 for a D500 (I'd rather spend the money on lenses).

Hi there I recently thought it would be fun to try an older Nikon the D200 which was the older brother to this. When I buy something I like to have one in good condition. Eventually I managed to get on for around 100 dollars (80 euro) in almost new condition. The camera cost 1800 dollars new I think and over the years it didnt suddenly become a bad camera. It feels great in use and as I don't really print anything very large 10Mp is enough really. I put the 50mm F1.8 AI-S lens on the front and the images are nothing short of stunning. Skin tones are absolutely amazing. The high ISO performance isn't so great but the difference is less than you think to new cameras. Sometimes I wonder whether we have been conditioned through marketing to want the newest and best and we overlook the bargains which are out there. Ps I have also noticed a trend since mirrorless has become all the rage that the DSLR prices are dropping generally. For those who dont mind using older tech that can only be good news.....

I picked up a used D300 this past July for $175.00 as a second body to shoot events along with my D7200. I keep my 50mm 1.8 on it all day long or even my 17-50mm 2.8. D300 has internal focus motor, so old Nikon lenses work on it along with my D7200. Couldn't be happier with the D300. Even picked up a third party battery grip, which increases the fps and makes it easier to shoot in vertical orientation. Very heavy camera, but clearly a tank when it comes to durability and weather sealing. I know this is a camera body I will keep for years. Thanks for your expertise.

I have been using a D300 for years as it is all I can afford. I do get great images. yes I would like to upgrade to a D500. But since I can't afford it, that won't be happening. It does a great job. Yes the ISO is lacking for later evening bird photography. I need to stop before others do. And at times it won't autofocus on something I am pretty sure a new camera would. But overall it is a great camera.

I've only been shooting for just shy of 2 years but in that time I've went from d3200 through d7000 and now have a d7200, d700 and d300, I wont part with the d300 or 700 firstly because they're so inexpensive but also I find their images so pleasing to the eye. In fact I'm going to buy another 300 and 700 for the closet as spares, two cameras that are far too good to be pushed aside by new technology.

+Photofonz ...Way to Go Photofonz, Nice Video! I've still got mine too. It's actually worth way too much to me, to sell it so cheap on eBay, so I use it when I don't want to carry the D810 or D7200 (Marches, Protests, etc.). Also, I keep thinking of the $1795 that I paid for it, and it's still in Great condition. I am a novice photographer who has just picked up this camera for $275.00 with quite a few accessories. The woman who owned it, bought it new with the idea of doing wedding photography in the summer months( she is a teacher) , but it never panned out and the camera sat for years , unused. I am told the shutter count is extremely low, as she only did two events before deciding this was not for her. I am thankful for your taking the time to post this video and you have made me feel as though I made a wise purchase. My main goal for this camera is to shoot scale models of automobiles and military craft.

D300 is the oldest out of all DSLR cameras I own, but I still grab it very often. What today's lazy and naive people don't understand is that 1) " Best Camera" for one reason or another isn't the best for you. 2) Gigapixel sensor and Gillion ISO on their own don't make a good camera. For years I was suffering from GAS and I was chasing the latest and greatest cameras until I saw some documentary about NASA. In this film I've heard one of their engineers saying something that changed my approach to gear dramatically - this guy said that NASA uses equipment which is only good enough to do the job... ...and this triggered sober thinking in my head. I still buy new cameras and lenses but not as often and not as expensive as before. My wallet is healthier and my photography didn't worsen since, so what's not to like about it. I know it's hard to resist GAS , but I made it and good luck to everyone who will decide to do the same.

Hi Fonz, I've bought a D300 for a strange half-assed reason & you may think I'm a bit weird. I want to compare the skin tones look of the D300 images with those of my newer, smaller, lighter very fashionable Fuji X-T1. The Fuji is fantastic in many ways, but somehow I just have this annoying feeling in the back of my mind that the skin tones don't look as satisfying and natural as those from my previous Nikon D700 images. I'm a cheapskate and can't quite stretch to re-buying the D700 just to test a feeling, but I saw a minty, boxed D300 for £210 - and it was just beautiful and really tempting. I figure the D300 is the little brother to the D700 and will share similar design parameters and components, and (hopefully) overall look to its output: - after all, Nikon wanted it to be really top class for APSC and built it really expensive. It's also APSC so I can directly compare the look of 12 MP Nikon with 16MP Fuji. I'll get a 35 f1.8g DX and 50 f1.8g and do a comparison with the Fuji with 35mm f2 and 50mm f2. I've never owned the 50mm 1.8 'g' lens but I already know the 35 DX lens on the D700 is superb (with a tiny bit of vignetting.) I'm really interested to see what comes out. If the D300 shots look better to me, I may have to re-buy the enormous and heavy D700 LOL. Tim

When making comparisons with recent higher megapixel systems, my dilemma is determining whether the image quality at 12mp is superior to 24mp or 36mp. My understanding is the comparatively larger and less densely packed pixels on a 12mp sensor result in less noisy image output, but I think dynamic range may improve with higher megapixel systems. As higher pixel density sensors are developed I presume the digital signal processing hardware and software keeps pace and perhaps eliminates the noise issues.

I think in many areas technology has reached its peak where buying something new is just falling a victim to commercials, as your current or previous item is in every way capable to cover your every need, or even exceed it, as in this case Nikon D300. We need to start appreciating what we have already; look where our insane consumerism has taken us, socially and ecologically. Not talking about obvious - materially. And oh, $240-300 for something that used to cost $2000? Good things come to those who wait. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmqqi5l6ZdyLmJo .

Hi, Bought mine a couple of years after the date you bought yours. Have had a similar good expierience with it.... most impressed with the battery which is 15 years old and works quite well still.....Althought havent use it much lately, I was wondering if I wanted to purchase a spare battery, which specs should i look for?, mine is 1500mA; are the generic batteries sold in amazon any good? Also, I understand you can go up to 32 Gygabites on the CF, have you tried using an SD card within a CF adapter? thanks in advance for any info.

As for spare batteries: When I got spare batteries for my Nikons, the specs were the same for both the Nikon brand and the generic brands and the generic brand worked fine. However, in my case, I find the Nikon brand held the charge a little longer. As for the CF memory cards versus SD cards: I never tried using the adapter as I had an abundance of CF cards that I used for my wedding photography. Although I no longer have the Nikon D300, I used it quite heavily until it quit on me, then I sold it for parts on eBay. I really enjoyed that camera body with its quality workmanship and great looking images. Best of luck with it.

How big of a family portrait would you enlarge using the d300s (iso 100-200) with the Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 lens with fill flash on a bracket? Some say you are pushing the limits at an 11x14, you say as large as a 24x36, could you just send the digital file to Bay Photo or White Wall to color correct and print a 24x36? And you think, as a pro, that it would look nice enough (sharp enough at 2 foot plus viewing distance) to hang on my living room wall? Thanks. Keep up the good work.
@photofonz
@photofonz Жыл бұрын
Thank you! And great question. I remember reading and hearing about what you mentioned, that 11x14 is the largest recommend size to be printed from something like a 12 MP file size. But, I found going back to the days I was using my Nikon D300 for wedding & portrait photography, I sold & had samples of 24x36, (24x30) and many 20x24 inch prints. Even using my Fuji S2 & S3 I made beautiful photos going to 24x36 inch prints. Getting to your question about how big I would go with a family portrait, as long as the head sizes are not too small, I would easily go 24x36. One thing to keep in mind: Your exposure, lens quality, amount of cropping, all play a part in the quality of your final image. Try it. I think you'll be amazed at the results you can get. When I get caught up, I'll see if I can address this in a KZbin video. Thanks again for the great question.

@@photofonz Thank you for the quick reply. I don't know why some people ditz the d300(s). With an image, it is either well composed, lighted, in sharp focus, good posing of your subject, capturing good facial expressions, etc. and that the enlargement is sharp with good color saturation, etc. or it isn't... And if the D300(s) can capture the aforementioned, as photofonz suggests, it is definitely still a good still life and portrait photography camera even by 2022 standards. Sure it is no D810 or D850, but if the enlargement is beautiful, who cares what camera was used to capture the image. Thanks Again!

You did a very nice job on this video. I purchased my D300 through E-Bay about 7 months ago to compliment my 2 D3300's that I have. My question is it appears you aren't using your D300 anymore. What camera are you using now? I've been thinking in getting rid of my D3300 and going with a new D7100 because of the $500 instant rebate putting the cost at $688 which isn't bad for a new camera. Or do you have any thoughts on a older model of camera that would be a better buy? Best wishes, Duane

Thank you Duane. Yes, I started using my Nikon D300 again, replacing my old Fuji S2, doing small product and jewelry photography. My main camera for assignments is the Nikon D7200, which is an outstanding body. For travel and fun I like the mirrorless Fuji X-M1 and most recently used the Fuji X-70 on a travel assignment. The X-70 is truly amazing.

Thank you for your reply. I like the build of my D300 and the fact it has a focusing motor in the body which allows me to use the older D lenses (which I can't use those lenses with my D3300) I'm hoping that I'm making a good choice in getting the D7100 (I don't do videos so the D7200 doesn't interest me) The only mirror less camera that I have is the Nikon Series 1 V2 but it hasn't caught my interest much. Best wishes, Duane

È possível trocar o sensor da D300?
@photofonz
@photofonz 5 жыл бұрын
I personally have never done it, but it can be done by a qualified technician. Although from what I've heard, it could be a bit pricey. If you think the sensor is scratched, it could be the low pass filter that goes over the sensor. If that's the case, you can have a B&W infrared conversion conversion done. What the conversion does is remove this hot mirror filter and replace it with our custom manufactured infrared or clear filter. One source that I'm familiar with is LifePixel. From what I understand, they can also replace your scratched sensor assembly's low pass filter with a scratch free filter, if that's what it is. However, with what the Nikon D300s are selling for currently, you may want to replace it with a good pre-owned one.

Hi, I'm two years late but the answer is you have live view but not movie mode. You can look at the live view by switching the wheel on the left. Live view is good with getting accurate focus - it's like an enlarged viewfinder.

Someone recently asked me a similar question, so I'll post my response again here. Best of luck: While I'm generally not a wildlife photographer, I have listened to several photographers who are and they usually like a long telephoto lens in the 300-600mm range. Setting your D300 up for back button focus can also help you with better and faster autofocus. I've come across a good article by Todd Vorenkamp that you may want to read: www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/hands-review/birding-dream-team-nikon-d500-and-nikon-300mm-f4 Roman Kurywczak has some really good info about bird/wildlife photography: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2mqXqeqhNxphq8

I've never owned the Nikon D90 so personally I cannot compare the two, but looking at the reviews, they are very similar and either one would be a good buy for someone looking in this price range. One thing that may help you decide is that the D300 has environmental sealing, while the D90 does video. If it was me and shooting video was not a concern, I personally would consider the D300.

It depends on the camera body. Some bodies have a higher shutter life expectancy than others. Also depend on the overall condition of the camera and of course the price.

First, the Nikon D300 is older technology, plus it does not shoot movies. It does however give you certain advantages such as: Weather sealed, focusing motor, longer battery life, more focusing points, etc. If you don't need these, then you may want to consider the 3300. If the budget allows, a better choice may be the D5300 or D5500.

Yes, the white balance on the Nikon D300 can be adjusted choosing the Kelvin color temperature settings as well as the Incandescent, fluorescent, direct sunlight, flash, cloudy, shade or auto and custom white balance. I recently used this camera on some of the images taken on a wedding using auto white balance. However, when using the D300 in the camera room for jewelry and small product photography, I set a custom white balance and that gives me really nice natural colors.

I have not owned the Nikon D90, but from what I hear from other photographers, the D300 and D90 are very similar. I like the fact that the D300 has 51 focus points, a weather sealed body, pc sync port, uses CF memory cards and a little better battery life. The D90 has a built-in focus motor and is a bit lighter and may not have the build quality of the D300, but is very capable of producing similar or better images as the D300. The D90 has slightly more color depth and dynamic range plus also slightly lower noise at high ISO. One would have to weigh the advantages of each but for what you pay today, either one would be a great choice.
