I had heard a lot about the D300 and I took a chance on one when a good deal came around on a used one. There is something about the images from the D300 that are outstanding from the rest of the Nikons I own. The camera is built like a tank, as well as it should be for a pro level APSC body. The camera is just a joy to use. From what I have read, the sensor is made by the same company that made the FX sensor for the D700 and D3, and it is not a Sony sensor. One of the best things is that you can get one at a very reasonable price with a low shutter count. The D300 is the camera i go for most of the time because of the quality of the images. Would I buy another one? I now have a total of 6 because they don't make cameras like this anymore.

My primary gear these days consists of Canon 6D and 80D with some nice glass. When I went from film to digital I originally went with a Nikon D90s. While venturing into Sony Mirrorless I sold the D90s body, but still had a few lenses. You know how it is. "I have these lenses, I need a camera to go with them." So, I picked up a clean D300 off the bay for $100 or less (US). I also have a nice old Kino (Kiron) manual zoom in a Nikon mount. I don't use the D300 much, but when I took it out to try it I was pleasantly surprised with the images. Using the vintage lens and a Nikon 50mm f1.8 shooting around golden hour, I was pleased to see that the images reminded me of film images I got from professional slide film. I also enjoyed the handling and ergonomics of the camera. I was going to sell the whole kit but I think it will stay around for pure pleasure. Especially for using vintage glass. I haven't shot professionally, except for the occasional side job, since my film days. So for general use and covering events unpaid for some uses the old Canon 6D with my better selection of lenses will still get the nod. However, I would feel find shooting portraits or covering some things with the D300 and the 50mm f1.8. With some better glass to cover working ranges, I would still consider the D300 as a good working camera as well. My advice to many either getting into photography or who just want to enjoy photography? By quality, older bodies, and using the money saved to buy better lenses. Then practice, learn, and improve your photography with that gear. Grow out of that gear when you actually start to exceed its capabilities. You will be a better photographer for it.
@DavidCuhls Жыл бұрын
Yes, I can totally relate with using older DSLRs and pairing them with nice old vintage lenses. The results you get and the pleasure that you get from using them is just very nice and unique. So I think it was a very good idea that you didn't sell your equipment off at the time and kept some of them to use and still enjoy them today. You also have quite a nice primary setup as well, the Canon eos 6D and the 80d are very nice cameras that still produces great colours as well. I am sure you've produced many great results and moments with them already. Thank you very much for watching as well as for sharing your story/experience, very much appreciated it. With the battery grip with a high powered battery this can get upto 8fps. My understanding was that because the autofocus in continuous mult shot was very accurate in combination of high dynamic rang and the longer reach of the crop factor, this camera can become a cheap and sport camera alternative.

My 2nd and most used digital camera. Carried it around so much I wore parts of the body down. For image quality it was a big deal for its day, but I take a lot of low light photography, and its messy shadows has always been its achilles heal. That said, for ergonomics and ease of use it can hold its own against far more more expensive and modern cameras. The autofocus is lighting fast, and the menu and controls are snappy and easy to get to. Its the kind of camera you _want_ to use. It's also solid, well built and feels great in your hands. I upgraded to a D750 eventually, but I still occasionally bust this out for my non-FX glass. Don't think I'll ever sell it.

This camera still gives amazing images, i bought mine for US$130 8k shutter count and in mint condition seriously. Yes like what i said it still produce very good image quality, colours are very good no complaint there because i can still adjust that in light room. The only complaints was the ISO, well not really a complaint because in good light amazing very little noise. But in lowlight it’s a bit noisy, but still if you know how to use this camera no problem there. I can still use 1600 iso with no complaint for me. Actually i like the noise that it produce, it’s like film noise and i like it like that. All in all this camera is still relevant now and into the future. Don’t let the new cameras blinded you, because to be honest i will challenge you using just this camera for any photography challenge and still produce good photos.

Yes, totally agree, the image quality is still great from this camera but of course, with the limitation of older technologies, the low light performance isn't really great.. Back again a year later. I am currently at the point of making some changes. In the last year, I picked up a very clean, old Nikon FM SLR (I used a brassed-up one professionally in the mid-90s) and a Canonet QL17 rangefinder. Both are fondly remembered from my film days. I find I'm not doing much photography anymore. Maybe a little burnt out or bored. I'm seriously considering selling my Canon 6D, 80D, and the Tamron 24-70 and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses. (No folks, not advertising please don't ask.) I'll keep my old infrared converted 20D and my 40mm STM lens (I happened to get an old Rebel G film camera in a bundle too.) Maybe my 10-16mm Canon as I have an EOS to E-Mount converter and plan on keeping my little a5100 kit. All that gets to the point here. I'm thinking of making film my primary for photography now. Sell the above and use the money for the tanks, bulk film & loader, changing bag, etc. All that stuff I had decades ago. But I don't want to totally dump digital. And, I can't afford to reoutfit unless I sell a bunch of stuff. As it happens I have a vintage lens or two for Nikon and still have my D300 with a 50 1.8 and the basic kit lenses. Any AI glass I add for the SLR I can use on the DSLR. I did like that the images from the D300 had a bit of a film look to them. I've made 13x19 and 16X20 prints with 12MP images that look great. So all that to say as I slow down, I kind of want to slow down the process too and take the time to make each image count. I do appreciate being able to take multiple varied images with digital, but I also remember taking my time to make sure I really got things right with the limits of rolls of film. Having the D300, a few lenses for it, and the ability to use a variety of lenses for both film and digital makes it look like a good option to pair with the lovely old FM. The D300 is heavy, especially with the battery grip. But, it is also rugged and works very well. Since the idea is to shoot the lighter SLR and rangefinder as primaries, that's not really much of an issue. Maybe it will even add to the motivation to take the film cameras out more often. Sorry for rambling. I guess I'm just saying that The old bodies can do the job if you can. Besides, the D300 is practically giveaway priced these days.

My D300 cannot focus clearly, is it a setting possibly?
@DavidCuhls2 жыл бұрын
There are several factors to consider... The first one, check if the lens is in af mode. Two, check if the diopter is clearly adjusted to your eye site (the diopter is the tiny little dial next to the viewfinder where you can adjust the clarity of the viewfinder). Three, sometimes the lens is just really old and has very low contrast that it seems out of focus... Four, it could be the lens's focus problem where you might need to calibrate the focusing system of the lens. Five, it also could be the focusing problem of the camera that needs checking or calibrating, in this case, it's best to send it for service to check it for you... These are some of the likely scenarios that I could think of so far... I hope it helps somewhat... I hope that you can get the issue fixed. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting. :-)

For my work (as you can also see in my photoshoot videos), I generally use the 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, 28-70mm 2.0 and so on. Lenses are really important not only for the image quality but also for getting different perspective as well as showing different impacts on your images as well. :-)

hi david,great vid. thank you i have one question for you,How is this camera for portraits?I mean the skin tones and rendering?
@DavidCuhls2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I personally think that the rendition for the skin tones is very nice and natural. Whether it's from dark to highlights or rendition of different tones within the skin tones, it's very nice, natural and smooth. Of course the colour depth is not as much as the more modern day cameras.. That said, I really love the skin tones coming out of the camera and it's very natural and not too saturated like modern cameras. If you want to edit the skin tones, there are still enough depth within the colours to work with and each colour will react as you expect them to. :-) There is not weird tones interrupting the skin tones (like what you might see in many of Panasonic and Sony cameras), so that's also good. So overall I would highly recommend it for skin tones. :-) Hope that helps somewhat. I thank you very much for watching and also for the kind words, very much appreciated it. @@DavidCuhls Ok cool thank you bro i’ll have a look into buying an external recorder. Respects to you though man for still replying to comments on a video made 2 months ago, you earned a sub 👍

Thank you for your support and also for the kind words, I really try to reply whenever I can. Though it sometimes takes a bit of time but I really try to reply as some people might really need certain information. Though like in this case, I might not know the exact answer but I still want to reply with what I know based on my past experience in hopes that it helps... But yeah, thanks so much for watching and also for the kind words, really means a lot! :-)

I love shooting with my film camera, but man films are so expensive nowadays. Manage to snuck this beast for $39 at Yahoo Auction. Equal to 2-3 color film stock, man I am so happy with this buy.

Can we take videos on nikon D300
@DavidCuhls11 ай бұрын
The D300 cannot take video, it was realised before DSLRs were able to record video (as mentioned in the video as well) ☺️ I hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting ☺️☺️

It is built perfectly, has decent images up to iso 400. But high iso photos are not that great.

D300 or d90 for portrait
@fixedfocusmediaofficial9 ай бұрын
Both are excellent for that. I prefer to focus on the eye of a subject and recompose.

Hello David, do you think its still a viable camera as we near 2024? For general hobby photography and maybe some daylight sports or kids running around?
@fixedfocusmediaofficial9 ай бұрын
I got payed jobs in 2024 with a 6mp camera from 20 years ago and everyone loved the results. Even though it was a consumer grade model it still took much better pictures than flagship phones even at large print sizes so the answer to your question is yes.

@@fixedfocusmediaofficial thanks my friend... I did end up buying a near mint d300s with only 2800 shutter count. Its WB/ISO/QUAL button cluster was damaged though. So I got it off AliExpress and repaired it myself 😎 working like a charm now.

@@AbbasBinYounas The most important things in photography are your skills as a photographer and the quality of the lenses you use. For older cameras without face detection, I always use one autofocus point, focus on a subjects eye, and recompose. You get fast with practice. Manually placing autofocus points is really important for older cameras since they don't know what they are looking at.

@@fixedfocusmediaofficial while this is exactly what I do, I feel that focus-&-recompose throws the focus off every sooo slightly, especially with fast lenses. What do you think?
@fixedfocusmediaofficial9 ай бұрын
@@AbbasBinYounas I haven't had that issue but it also depends on your distance from the subject, how fast you are, and how fast they move. Most of the time for portraits I use an aperture of f/2.8 to make sure every part of the subject including their ears are in focus. That aperture also helps if they move a tiny bit.

Yep, you certainly did talk way too much. But the main points were covered. I've had my D300 from new but it sits in the bag almost continuously now.. using my D700 and D5300 in preference along with the Oly OM-D E-M10 and Lumix G5 primarily. My D300 has less than 10k of actuations but has some stuck pixels (red) so I am always nervous about using it too much and pushing the ISO incase it makes for more failures. With the Lumix and Olympus I can run the pixel mapping routine to remove (or mask) their effect but this is not available on the Nikons. Weight is the main issue though. If I only need crop sensor (more limited wide angle) then I'll gravitate to the 5300 with articulated screen and option of *great video capability (*for a still shooter person perspective that is). If your battery is f falling off a cliff it is worth going into the menu and checking on the battery life (health) meter reading. I think mine are still indicating 90>95% last time checked. The weather sealing is certainly a benefit.. if you have any weather sealed lenses. I don't. A massive benefit with these Nikons though is the continuity of the AI type lens mount and availability to shoot with really old glass in some setting even if only manual. But most allow auto exposure functions. Most of mine are Tamron Adaptall 2 mount models. Having bought a Pentax K-m with IBS I find that it will not work at all with basic PK rather than PK-A lenses. Now you have me talking too much. Enjoy your photography everyone. UK rules OK. 😉

My only opinion of the D300 is buy a D200 😅 No seriously, the D300 is always going to be good camera, not a great camera. The D200 having its CCD sensor puts it ahead of the D300 imo. Granted you get a few bells whistles with the D300 and especially D300s. Here's a secret. The jpgs on the D200 are as good as the raw files on the D300. Jpegs can be edited just like raw files, you just need to take 10min to learn how. The jpegs from the D300 fall apart when pushed, vs the D200 which you can push a lot and the files don't fall apart like a Tetris game 😅 I downgraded several times from the Z50, DF, D3s, D300, all the way back to the D200 for its look and extremely accurate metering system. Hidden gem 🤷🏾♂️ $50 😉 and can keep up with todays cameras in the stills department. Only shortcoming is autofocus speed, especially in extremely low light, but why shoot in pitch black 😅 anything under moonlight is a go.
