I remember watching this video two years ago. I learned how to operate my D3100, and throughout time I've learned an abundant amount about all the settings in my camera, Lightroom, and techniques. Thank you, Jared. You're awesome!

I'm a beginner, I bought the camera and I had no idea how to use it. Seeing all the buttons and settings was crazy but I really wanted to learn how it works, this tutorial was really helpful, who needs the manual? lol THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have a lot to learn about this camera and this videos are excellent. Btw the way he explains makes everything more easy!

I finally bought a DSLR and went with the 3100. So far I'm liking it, and this video was a huge help in familiarizing myself with the controls, thanks a lot!! One thing I think is worth mentioning is that when you hit the menu button it'll take you back to the last menu you were in, so I just leave the cursor in the "Recent Setting" panel, and quickly have access to a wide range of menu options not available in the info section, such as format memory card, picture controls, etc. Thanks again!

Thank you for making this video. I just picked my D3100 up a few days ago and I feel like I know more about the camera than if I had tried to read the manual. The best tip I got from this video was hitting the 'info' button to scroll to different settings to make quick adjustments.

I dont know if you mentioned it or not, but when you're in the main screen that has all your settings displayed if you hold the function button below the pop up flash button you can change the ISO setting without going into a menu just like you can change the aperture by holding the +/- button and using the scroll wheel.

i think you might have missed an important setting when you skipped the ISO sensitivity option on the shooting menu if you leave the Auto sensitivity on it will override your ISO setting in Manual mode if the camera detects that you haven't got perfect exposure so whatever ISO you choose it will just choose it automatically for you.

Try flash, and/or check you ISO. If it's really low, turn it up. Don't put your Shutter Speed under 1/30s with out a mono/tripod. Hope this helped.

jared, you can let the camera rotate the image to the right position for lightroom, but still let it the way you shot it right in the camera to use the full size of the screen. these are two different options in two different menues. just figured that out on my d3100.

This video is soo nice just all the setting in a quick overview. I always get lost in the menu. You can spend a hour changing stuff and think later what did I do.... ahh. Then shooting a photo knowing something is not the way I like and then spending a lot of time again going trough the menu.. Too bad the camera doesn't have autobracket for HDR would loved that...

@Wuzzysbrand06 Because the lens you are using is probably the kit lens. at 18mm, the lowest fstop is 3.5 But at around 55 mm, the lowest fstop is 5.6. If you look on the lens it says 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 that shows the smallest f-number possible.

Thank you ! Especially for the display mode, not really fond of the graphic one. I've been using a D200 for 5 years now and I just bought a D3100 for video purpose. The D3100 seems to be quite good for photography as well and the difference between the D200 and D3100 is not that wide as the D200 is getting older now. Actually I don't know if I need the two DSLR cameras ...
