***D3300 review from an experienced wedding photographer So after watching your videos on the d3300, I was pretty much sold. I bought it as my first camera for portraiture and used your tutorial to learn how to use it. Right from the start, I bought the 35mm 1.8 again following your advice and had a good time shooting with it. Everyone that saw my shots was always impressed. I was super fond of my camera especially considering I got the setup for around $400. Now all was well until a year in when I decided to use my camera professionally. I wanted to shoot weddings with it(photography). For my first wedding, it worked great because there was plenty of daylight streaming through the windows so I won’t get into it that much. Second wedding was indoors and during the late evening hours. There was a lighting setup by the stage. Let me start off with the fact that when I got home and went through my images, more than half of my shots were out of focus in one way or another. But the thing is, at the time they appeared in focus on the screen. Secondly, it took wayy too long for me to get my shots because every time I positioned the couple in a different spot, I had to readjust my settings. I shoot on aperture priority mode with iso on 100(again thanks to tony), auto-focus and F1.8. Every time I actually had to use my in-camera exposure options to increase the exposure in my shots. Bear in mind that despite doing this they still required a lot of editing afterwards. Conclusion: My experience using this camera for indoor events and shoots wavered my confidence in it. I didn’t have the funds to afford upgrading to a beautifully fast full-frame dslr as I wanted to so I had to make do. But now I’m no longer confident in using this camera for future events, in marketing myself and trying to get more clients because as you know weddings are a very very special day for the client and there is no do-over, you have to get it right the first time. But the amount of time it takes for the camera to focus on the subject with its few focus points that are cluttered around the center are torture. Most people don’t want to stand there holding one pose for that long and nor do they want to pay you more than a grand for those images. I could say a lot more but I’ll stop here and hope this helps you in understanding whether or not you should get this setup. Notes: - A lot of ppl sing high praise of this set-up being wonderful in low-light which is true... to an extent. It’ll take the shot but requires a lot of editing afterwards, adjusting the exposure, shadows; blacks etc. - It’s an amazing camera when shooting outdoors, never had a problem with it. Perfect for the hobbyist and somehow who only needs it occasionally and doesn’t really care much for the technical or creative aspect of things. - I shoot raw always and use auto-focus because of how fast-paced weddings are, the battery life is horrible. A full charge only lasts a few hours. For a full-day shoot, you would need at least 2 fully charged batteries. After saying all this I still love my camera and would recommend it for most occasions. I’ve gotten some amazing shots of dance performances with this camera and that’s saying something.

Being a very dedicated Nikon shooter even though I have used numerous Canon, some Sony and even added an Olympus E-PL1 to my gear bag; I enjoyed your layout and detailed explanation of the camera. My very first DSLR was the D3000 which just goes to show how far this line up has come, then I got a D3100. After shooting with these two cameras for a few years I got the D7000 rather then a full frame rig. My money has been in lenses as you constantly pointed out and it has paid off for sure. The megapixel hype is a bit annoying but the actual quality of the images is of great importance to me and the cameras I use have given me that in combination with great lenses. Plus I can keep my travel weight down. It's nice to have an APS-C camera that is lighter weight and can give me the detail and insane quality that had so many sticking to film gear for years yet is affordable.

It's really nice that you do in depth reviews for lower end cameras. I hope you will continue to do so in the future. I only have one suggestion - to show the actual difference in picture quality between the kit lens and some more quality lens. People who plan to step up their game with better lenses in the future would certainly find it useful.

Could someone please help me out to understand the "kit lens only transmits around 9 MP of data". What is the reason for this?
@TonyAndChelsea9 жыл бұрын
philscomputerlab It's a bit blurry, like looking through dirty glasses.
@denis700d9 жыл бұрын
philscomputerlab It's due to a physical characteristic of optic materials known as transmission, the amount of light emitted by every 100th of light absorbed. The lenses have a lot of glasses and they keep part of that information. That's why the prime lenses have a better resolution than zooms. Also is due to the glasses quality. There are $20 000 lenses with 20 mm - 50 mm made of fluorite, a high transmittance crystal, used for movies camcorders.

I bought your photography digital book last year and I learnt so much. I have a very specific and nerdy question please. I got the Nikon D3300, my first DSLR and it has this feature Active D-Lighting. I really like what it doe, BUT, it only applies to photos, not video. Do you know, or can you point me in the right direction, what D-Lighting does and if I can replicate it's magic in a video editor? Thank you!

What's up Tony? You've just eased my mine on a problem I thought I might have one day with my D3300. Before I purchased this camera I had a Nikon 6006 in which I took that camera out in all sorts of weather with no problem. Looking at the way you use your camera in the snow lets me know, I will have no problems if I be careful. As far as the 6006 is concerned I still have it. It was purchased in 1996 and it's still a great camera; and I do still use it sometime. I fact, I think it takes better shots sometime. This is good information; and great video. Peace!

Hey Tony Northrup, great video! However, you mentioned multiple times how the 18-55mm kit lens had a DXO Mark P-mpix rating of 9 mega pixels. I looked at DXO Mark's website and I found the lens, except they don't have any test data on it. I was wondering where you found this statistic because I cant seem to find it anywhere. I am planning on getting the D3300, but I'm trying to decide if I should buy the body only, and upgrade to a better lens. If the P-mpix stat of 9 mega pixels you cited is actually true, it is quite a substantial one.

What a fantastic review, and a nice jacket! :) Thanks for explaining why 24.2 Megapixel is pretty useless because of the 9megpixel sensor glass. I've been using a compact camera for many years now and would like to switch to one of these with major consideration on the video, as well as zooming. My compact camera has so much blur and noise when zoomed, so that's a factor. What would you recommend for a cheap lens that would complement the 24.2 megapixel of this camera? Thanks again.

Getting my first DSLR, next week and this is the camera i decided to go for. When researching, the specs says that the d3300 has an internal focus motor but in reviews that I look at no one mentions it, wondering if you can confirm if it does or not, for this was a major factor that lead me away from the d3200. Learning a lot from your channel. Thanks.

Heya, Philip. The D3xxx and D5xxx series cameras don't have focus motors; you need to jump up to the D7100 (sdp.io/d7100). I cover this in my Photography Buying Guide (sdp.io/buybg).

Hey tony, I recently went to Italy for a vacation and decided to bring my nikon d3300. I brought the stock lense and a af-s Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6g lense for longer range. Of course throughout the trip my nikon and the stock lense got a little banged up. The stock lense has minor dents and I noticed the rubber grip was starting to come out. How durable is the nikon d3300 and should I maybe exchange it for another one?

Hi... Thanks for this video... HUGE HELP!!! I have a D3000 with an older 18-55 mm lens. It has an "af-s" lens, vs the "af-p" lens on my new D3300... The main reason I bought the D3300 was to add video functionality, but as you also pointed out. It seemed very similar the D5XXX models without spending the extra money. Is there a benefit to the older "af-s" lens? To gain the 24 MP capability?
@BLynn94210 жыл бұрын
Very informative review! I did not realize that the lens could limit the number of MP in an image. Very surprised to find out that the kit lens with the D3300 would limit the image from a 24 MP sensor to 9 MP. Is there a way to find out the number of MP a lens would render? Again this is a fantastic and very informative review!

Great video. Thanks. I've just bought the D3300 for my daughter and am now learning how to use it myself first! The camera came with two kit lenses and it was interesting to note that you mentioned that the 18-55 only has 9 Mpxl capability. Does this also apply when everything is in manual mode i.e. autofocus off etc? I like the idea of growing with the camera and the great range of interchangeable, high quality lense Nikon has to offer. Thanks again. Cheers!

Cheers! I'll see how she gets on with the package. Coming from starting with a non-parallax corrected, bellows B&W "compact" sideview Kodak as my first camera aged 8 and moving on to Minox C, Pentax ME Super (which it was), Bell & Howell Zoomatic Director, Bolex-Paillard P1 Zoom Reflex, Nikon R-10 Super 8 w/sound dubbing, various Olympus's (also very fine); I have learned the hard way. both in the still and movie making departments. I am still at a loss with all the advanced technology available today, that a simple pause button feature is not featured in Video Mode to enable reframing and change of shot/scene/lap-dissolve/fade in and out etc. These features are sadly lacking in many modern cameras which makes shooting decent, contiguous movies a chore that has to be done with an editing program. Such is life I suppose. Carry on with your great reviews!! Andy

I really don't know if it's best for me to upgrade only the lens or also the camera. I don't care about the pixels, the 14mp on my 3100 are more than adequate, but I love the new features of the 3300 (better ISO range and no low pass filter) and I want to buy it together with a 50mm or a 35mm! hii , i am a big fan of yours ,have seen many of your videos , i currently have one canon 550 d with 18-55 kit lens ,a tamron 18-270 and a canon 50mm 1.8 , i want to move to a different camera , is this camera a better choice i have two cameras in mind canon 700 d and nikon d 3300 (700d is about 150$ costly in india and i am saving this for lens budget in case i move to nikon), and most importantly are they a worthy upgrade at all (i mostly click family pics) (i will be able to send my old camera easily with kit lens,but wont be able to sell the remaining two lens i guess)

Thanks Tony for an awesome video, I bought d3300 few months back but it's only after watching your video couple of times that I could use it. I am just starting to learn dslr photography through KZbin ! I had a question regarding external flash. Which one would you recommend with this model, I see lot of options on Amazon but can't really choose one. Thanks again ... Looking forward to your advise :)

I am confused between three very popular budget cameras, D3300, D5200 and the Canon 1300d(Rebel T6). I am a beginner and hope to learn on one of these, and they are all available at roughly the same price in my country. Initially I will be using the kit lens only, and later on get a 50mm lens for portraits. Advantages I see is D5200 has 39 AF points, D3300 is light, and T6 has better connectivity options. On the other hand T6 has Optical Low pass filter. Which one should I buy?

There's also a difference in sensor quality. If you like to post process your images heavily, Nikons are better bet. D5200 has some features that 3300 doesn't like delayed exposure, auto bracketing (for HDR), time lapse and more....

Hello Tony, I was wondering what would be a great prime lens for this camera i was thinking maybe a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens but I'm not quite sure. Thank you.

I finally got a chance to shoot with a Canon... it was entry level but I have also been shooting with professionals that use Canon crop frame camera's. One thing I have really noticed is the better color and exposure in the Nikon. I had to keep changing the exposure compensation 1, sometimes 2 stops to get a good exposure depending on conditions. I shot with a pro last weekend with a 60D and he said he was changing his exposure 3 stops for clouds and stuff. I shot all day and never touched the exposure comp on my Nikon D5100. And the bacon.. Nikon delivered it..... I embarrassed two more experienced Canon shooters. I wouldn't consider any Canon crop except the 7D or the 70D. But seriously... I am glad I was shooting with the NIkon... the colors and exposures I got were stunning.

oh and btw Tony.. Nikons pop up flash is very good. It doens't blow like the canon on camera flash.
