@christianonphotography5 жыл бұрын
I would go even further: If you start with the photo-game, forget about the Kit-lens and invest the saved bucks in a 50mm 1.8 or the 35mm 1.8 as your only lens and start understanding how to deal with this only distance. Once you know how to handle that you can move forward to the more expensive glass.

Jared, this was an excellent introductory for a guy graduating from a Canon SX610 to the Nikon D3500. And you continually made the point of glass, glass, glass. I've known this for a long time. I own (and love) a D7100 AND a D500-and recently bought this, the D3500. Why? Because each of us wants the “best” camera. We also learn that the “best” camera is THE ONE YOU HAVE WITH YOU. At this point in the development of digital cameras, we can get almost the best technical quality, even in an “entry level” camera. Take same non-extreme shot, w/ same settings and lens, and you’ll be hard-put to tell which one was the D500, D7100 or D3500 shot. With the 24 megapixel sensor and the current processor chip, my D3500 is GOOD and FAST. The D3500 finally pairs up well with your smart phone. It even takes GPS based location data right from the phone to the RAW file. The body is redesigned. I take minimum of X Large gloves but the new grip shape is perfect. At a mere 365 grams the redesigned body is TINY, even compared to the D3300 or D3400. I got my D3500 body-only, used and already had a NIKKOR DX 35mm 1.8 G (only 200 grams). I take the combo everywhere, on an over the shoulder strap-it’s like carrying a spare pair of glasses. I take shots I wouldn’t get w/ either the D500 or the D7100-because I have the thing WITH ME. Now, try this with your cell phone or even a similarly sized Sony, etc.: if I need “reach beyond 35mm lens range or in low light, I TAKE THE SHOT (in RAW) and then crop to the not-so near subject. The 24 megapixels plus great f/1.8 lens let’s me get away with it. I use the D500 for birds in flight, the D7100 in art museums and such, and the D3500 for just about anything else! Nikon has a winner here, for both the beginner and the careful and experienced shooter.

I have a d3300. I use it on actual paid shoots. 2 things, 1: the newer 18-55 doesn't have a physical switch to turn autofocus on and off, and 2: Once light starts dropping autofocus very quickly goes down hill. I either have to shoot manual focus, or single point on that crosstype. But with the good 'ol 35mm 1.8, even the cross type not quite accurate enough. That being said, (at least the d3300) shared the same, or very similar sensor to the higher end brothers. Just missing focus points and other features. Most of my best photos are on my d3300, mostly because I'm much more comfortable using it vs the a7iii. All of that being said, I don't have experience with the d3500, but if my d3300 and the d3400 I bought my mom is anything to go buy, it is the best camera value period. Decent noise performance, good feeling overall, and surprising dynamic range.

Nice review Jared. I had an opportunity to review the D3500 for the Amazon Vine program and came away thinking that this is a great little camera. It's very light with the 18mm-55mm AF-P kit lens, and is still pretty light with the Nikkor 55mm.200mm lens. It's a great camera to carry on an everyday basis (to work or school) if you don't want to lug around a heavier DSLR. Nikon also includes a "Guide" feature that explains the basics of photography for newbies. It's a great "starter" camera for anyone looking to graduate from cell phones.

I'd say that either the Canon, Nikon or even the basic Sony a6000 kit (used) is OK for portraits (providing you use an appropriate lens of course). The limitations that might annoy some experienced photographers is the DOF as it's not quite the same as on a FF higher-end body. Plus the lenses for APS-C tend to be not of the same build quality. But by all means, a $500 entry level camera kit can certainly be used with good success. Another limiting factor I think others may not like is the lack of focus points on most of the $500 (or less) cameras. Nikon and Canon I believe only have 13 focus points, compared to even the 51 used on the D5000-and D7000 series. But regardless, one can do focus-and-recompose if they had to.

Ngl, when I was a kid. I broke a few things, and now when I reached 16 and matured (a bit). I've became a good teen. By what I mean is, maybe it takes a bit longer for a child to matured. 😉

For the price that AF-P 70-300 is a really nice telephoto. I used to shoot horse racing with one and it's excellent when you have lots of light.

Thank you!!! I was on the fence about the Canon T7 or this one right here. I wish this one could use vintage glass though. That was one of the things that got me most excited about Nikon. Either way, I can’t wait to pick it up!

It would be nice if more beginners would get a camera like this. People should stop using their cell phones for truly important photos.

They'd be better off buying a cheap phone and a decent camera if photography is important to them.

100%, glass is the super important as well as the correct settings. You forget that you can you shoot underexposed and drive up the darkness in post like it's daytime w/ the right camera. Very important when you need a higher shutter speed while keeping the ISO noise down when aperture priority becomes important.
