that is worth the £2500 price tag alone! the d800 with a nikon 14-24mm is the dream for landscape photographers

why do you not agree? the 1Dmark4 has a smaller sensor a aps-h size vs full frame, more pixels 16 vs 12, smaller pixel pitch, on print, it is ever so slightly better. The 5d mark 1 is still considered to be a great camera and was revered for its low noise performance.

I compared the Canon 7D and the Canon 400D over t DXO and was amazed that the ISO performance of the 400D would be slightly better(?!) From real life experience I know that the 7D leaves the 400D far behind. Thus I read all this numbers with care. But good explanation from you side anyway. Much appreciated.

I know it's great fun when new cameras come out, but I'm real happy with my D700. And as others have said, get the camera you need not the one you think you want. In my instance I'm keeping my D700 (I like the form factor) and getting the Fuji X-Pro 1 when it becomes available. That's what I 'need'.

dxomark has some pretty serious testing procedures, its not subjective. apart from the final total scores

Great attitude! Dont let the gear snobs reel you in is what I promote, Dom isnt doing that but lots do. If you cant take a good pic with a 550D you dont have any chance whatsoever with a more advanced camera! Composition, good light and a charged battery is all you need! When you genuinely grow out of your gear for whatever reason...then you invest.

Though I will wait a couple of years before upgrading I already know that I'm going for the Canon 5D mard 3 over the Nikon D800. As both are brilliant camera's there is no way I want to deal with the megapixel overload of the D800.

My question is how is dxo mark making these diagrams? Is it people judging or is it more complex?

also when shooting indoor sports you need speed,tracking,accuracy and like you said ISO. i just dont understand what the DXO mark is good for

I would imagine that Jared who shoots a lot of very low light concert photography would have been hopping for vastly improved iso performance, That he may not have gotten but dynamic range and other aspects he has. In the end it is what you really need compared to what you think you want.

but on screen its 3 times bigger then the d300 or the d700 so of corse the noise is more seen!

I have downloaded the raw files for the D800 / D4 / D3S / D3 from the Dpreview, and (the first two) from IR. Up to ISO 6400 the D800 is better than the others considering both resolution and noise with sensible postprocessing and downsampling to 12MP (the DxO ratings downsample to 8MP). That's incredible good news for me since a sold my D700 and D7000 not long ago hoping for good new "entry level" FX body. I felt f***d when I learned that it was going to be 36MP and then I saw how wrong I was.

My 550D will do me for now! I mean, I can't imagine where about it would land on that chart, but I have taken some pictures that I am really, really happy with. Photography isn't about how smooth/clean photos are... It's all technique and what your trying to 'bring out' the image!

But if you have more dynamic range, color sensitivity, and tonal range at a higher ISO, shouldn't that be taken into account when considering ISO perfomance? The D4 beats the D3s is all those area through out the range yet the ISO score was lower. Okay so there could be a little more noise in the D4 file but the image would have a better color, dynamic range, and tonal range at the higher ISO so wouldn't that be better?

As long as you edit with lightroom4 the d4 is about 1/3 to half a stop better in high iso performance especially towards the end of the range. A lot of these reviews haven't processed the images properly to really get a fair result.

DXOmark ratings have serious issues. Check the Nikkor 50 f/1.8D with the D3X, D4, D7000, D40x. Although the D7000 uses only the sharpest section of the lens, it is rated far below the D4. "it's difraction" you say. But if that is the case, why do the D3x turns out sharper than the D4. "Because it has more MP" u say, but then the D7k has the same MP than the D4. Big inconsistency there. Computing the SNR requires a lens, but the case of the 50mm shows problems in the way that signal is computed.

D4s and D800 two diff cameras altogether, no way should they be compared, D800 will be great for studio based photographers were as any sports photographers would be daft using the D800. Sorry you just cant compare the two. All the same glad I kept my D3s and D700 :-)

Who is stupid enough to judge upon this ? i hope no one is. To me it sounds completely odd, and i guess this says more about the lack of scientific approach in this test, than it does of the development of the d4 compared to its little brothers.
