I cannot decide which I liked more: your talking during the shutter releases so I could not hear them at all or not having a lens on each camera tested.
@froknowsphoto11 жыл бұрын
Or I could delete your comment instead lol. I am aware of how this mode actually works. You take a picture hold the button release it when you can muffle the sound. The points are made in this video to find out which one was quietest and that was the 5d mkiii
@3bphotoCanada11 жыл бұрын
As numerous people pointed out the point of the Silent mode on a camera is to give you time to muffle or turn the camera away from your subject or whatever you're photographing to be the least disruptive as possible. I'm not sure what you're asking me to describe since you can barely put a sentence together but I did my best. Clearly you REALLY love Jared's work.

I must comment on the silent mode, as everyone reviewing silent mode is critical of it. It actually works Splendidly for wildlife. What reviewers don't seem to notice, at least with the Nikons that I'm familiar with, is that the mirror will remain up as long as you hold down the trigger. Now, why this is good: the rapid, single series of the mirror raising, shutter snapping, and mirror lowering gets the attention of wildlife because it's a very unnatural sound. However, the click of the mirror rising... Pause... The click of the mirror falling... Especially when you hold the trigger for a moment... This doesn't sound so unnatural to wildlife. It helped me to get 20 feet from an eagle feasting on a goose on a river bank. He wasn't particularly interested in me anyway, but when I wanted some in flight pics I switched to continuous high to drive him off.
@PKGTI11 жыл бұрын
You're right, according to the D800 user manual: "As for single frame except that noise is reduced by disabling beeps and minimizing sound produced when mirror drops back into place. Beep does not sound when camera focuses regardless of setting selected for Custom Setting d1 (Beep; 0292) and mirror does not drop back into place until shutter-release button is returned to halfway position after shooting, allowing you to delay noise made by mirror. Mirror is quieter than in single-frame mode."
@6foot4ride9311 жыл бұрын
Hi Jared, I believe that the idea of the quit mode is to click the shutter and keep your finger on it till you move a way from the target then release the shutter. In weddings I used to wait one or two second between holding and releasing the shutter. All of this is in my opinion. Thanks.
@froknowsphoto11 жыл бұрын
Yea, i didn't think about that.
@qki11111 жыл бұрын
Point is to hold down the shutter and release the mirror later.
@DasBlows11 жыл бұрын
I shot a wedding recently and used the silent mode in the church. AFAIK the main difference is that the mirror stays up as long as you're pressing the shutter button. So I used it during the ceremony when there was not much going on and the sound of a DSLR would be quite obvious and annoying. I took a picture, held the shutter button down and turned around, to release the mirror in a direction away from everybody. In my experience it reduced the noise of my D600 a little bit.
@kingalias377111 жыл бұрын
The best explanation of quite mode is that you're supposed to hold the shutter, walk off to someone where it's less intrusive and release. It's not supposed to be in one fail swoop.
@amazinggadgets620711 жыл бұрын
Glad I have a 5D Mark III. I also agree that the silent mode is really quiet. Usually ambient noise is enough to cover over the silent mode. I have accidentally shot off several frames before because I thought it didn't take the photo.
@syrgrad9111 жыл бұрын
I use Quiet mode on my D7000 fairly often. The key is not to try to shoot multiple shots simultaneously. Where it works well is taking the shot and then wait before releasing your finger from the shutter release. Most of the noise comes from the mirror flapping up and down quickly. Quiet mode allows you to slow the whole process down.

Love seeing these older video's. Even after all the major manufactures have moved on to Mirrorless from DSLR. I have the D4 and by far one of may favorite camera's to shoot with. But it's noisy and not a camera you take into a super quiet event. The output of the D4 still holds up really good compared to newer Mirrorless camera's if you don't need 40+ Megapixels.

The idea of Nikons Quiet mode is that it allows you to hold the mirror up following the shot and then release it again when you have either walked away from your subject or at least moved the camera away. I think you have misunderstood Nikons definition of this mode. The volume of the shutter is no different in normal or quiet mode. The sound damping of the Canon D5 does seem better in this test, however it is still not silent.
@photofx11 жыл бұрын
That's stupid. Don't gobble up everything Nikon says. (I am an F-mount user too)
@greghoyle761011 жыл бұрын
Jaded--the idea behind quiet mode is to take the pic with the downward push of the shutter and take the camera to another location for the mirror return sound--useful with a sleeping baby.

I actually found this review useful. If you spend g's on a camera you want as few limitations as possible. I think "situational shooting" (for nature shooting, business conferences/speeches, important meetings where the press is allowed) is a limitation you don't need.

agreed. I give my camera to my cousin on silent mode when I have to perform for a piano recital, and normally, i can pick noises up (because my mother always makes noise when I'm practicing), but unless i concentrate on finding that noise, it's extremely hard to detect, and she's only a few meters away from me.
@AntonGrimpelhuber11 жыл бұрын
The video may indeed be misleading to people who don't realize that this is not an objective, well-planned test, but rather a spontaneous idea turned into a quick video, with cameras you had available at the time. Judging from the comments, there *are* a lot of those people around. If it had been a well-informed test, you would have included the Pentax K5 mentioned by someone, and certainly a Sony SLT (the 99?) with electronic first curtain turned on. The verdict at 6:20 would be different!

The 5D Mrk.3 seems to be the quietest of the ones you tested. The F5, being a film camera, sounded like a train passing by outside the room. Try a Pentax K-5 or K-3 ... Those are so damn quiet in regular mode...

I was happy to see that my 5Dlll has the best silent mode, I use my mark lll in silent mode 99% of the time, not just because it's more quiet, but because i like the shutter sound, once I tried it the first time, I never went back, the only time I would ever shoot in regular mode would be to get 6 fps, also other than the White House, still photographers on movie sets need quiet cameras

The silent mode on my D3200 sounds just as loud as the regular mode, it just drags it out more. My camera isn't terribly loud to begin with though, it's not like you can hear it on the other side of the street when I take a shot. So I honestly don't care much about silent mode. Also, if you are in a situation in which you need a flash shooting silent is kind of pointless anyway :D

I bought my first DSLR about 6 weeks ago and bought your "Get out of Auto" video a few weeks after that (which has helped tremendously). This video has left me kind of puzzled though. Why would do a review on a camera function that you don't fully understand? I don't mean disrespect, your photography skills are first class, but this kind of KZbin content feels more like "noise" and less like "signal" (to loosely paraphrase Zack Arias). Sorry mate, but it's hard to stay interested.

Obviously, Nikon's strong and crispy shutter sound sounds much better than Canon's...and that's one of the reason I dislike 5DIII, its shutter sounds sounds like it is so weak, even dying... @3bphotoCanada11 жыл бұрын
Isn't your response to my comment kind of childish? You're saying you know how the mode works yet you didn't establish that in your video at all? Like many have said, this video misleads people at the actual purpose of these modes. The actual loudness of the cameras is somewhat irrelevant considering that when used properly the mode executes exactly what it's suppose to do. I would love to be a guest on your show and chat about these things with you but you need to be more open to criticism.

This is ridiculous. So if you are a photographer who is in a courtroom or maybe in someones house doing a reportage work. You take one picture, excuse yourself, get up, leave, go out for a walk, buy some coffee, let go of the shutter, come back 30 minutes later and take one more picture and do that all over again? Common sense isn't very common. 5DIII easily wins here for being the most usable camera in silent situations.
