About the battery life issue. Switching on Airplane mode seems to solve that problem for the most part I've heard. It seems that power drainage from the WiFi and Bluetooth radios is the culprit, and something a future firmware upgrade could likely solve.

I am a professional Photographer...pays my mortgage and has for over two decades. I bought the D500 on a whim based of the insider information I got from a buddy who made some of the test images for Nikon. He said it was better that the D750 in every way...Pretty shocking information at the time! Long story short it makes the D750 feel like a dog. The D500 is a bit better in low light, but much better at everything else The images and especially portraits are sharper and have better tonality out of the D500. The only advantage the D750 has is below 20mm on very wide angle images if you are a landscape freak...other than that the D500 is the better choice in every last way. After I got the D500 I sold all of my D750s and bought a second D500...Just saying! To me the D500 feel as much of a bolt action rifle as is the D5, but does a better job for every day photography as It is sharper, more compact, lighter, and has better dynamic range than the D5....Don't get me wrong I love my D5, but perhaps this more than anything else suggests at how good the D500 really is. I also own numerous D800 series cameras and quite like my D810s. Even here the D500 stacks up very well. If you could only afford one camera the D500 is a better choice unless you are a studio bound or wide angle landscape primary usage. Best $2,000.00 you can spend in the camera world...period. Anyone that says otherwise has no idea what they are talking about.

I agree, I still prefer my D750 for that extra lowlight ability - but now when ever I shoot Catwalks, Fashion / Editorial, Studio work and etc, I prefer picking up my D500 over my D750. There's just something about it that makes it enjoyable to use and produce amazing results!

I have to agree! When I saw the RAW images coming off the D500, I knew a new day was upon us...in the world of photography, of course. The IQ and high ISO performance is only very slightly behind the 35mm sensors. You're not going to get away from the DOF due to the physical size of the sensor but I shot with an APS-C camera for a long time and no one ever noticed. I've never been one of those "35mm sensors are better", photographers. The D500 is a better camera overall than the D750! Build quality is certainly better, the AF is superior as well, like I said the DOF is not something you'll get away from but the high ISO is on par. The only reason the D500 would be a detriment is the wider side of the range.
@VueeyLe
@VueeyLe 7 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it any better! Its been about 4 months now since I've bought the D500 and it has produced amazing results. With the lack of a AA Filter, I find the IQ and detail produced by the D500 is much more appealing. I've shot some commercial work with the D500 and I have not looked back. BUT the one reason why I keep my D750 is of course for the DOF for outdoor portrait work and ultra wide lenses. I am not a fan of any of the ultrawide crop sensor lenses produced by Nikon or other third parties (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Samyang). But for Sports, Commercial Studio / Catalogue, Events, Fashion Runways and Candids - I just use the D500. Just have more faith in the camera, the feeling / ergonomics is on point and the focus performance is just indescribable. Yes the D500 is one expensive crop sensor camera, but it one heck of a beast. You get what you paid for. From searching online, websites such as DXO Mark really stuffed up their testing, the score of the D500 should be a lot closer to the D750. One thing I wish they offered to buyers of the D500 is Dual SD or Dual XQD's - like the D5. Its annoying to bring two card readers.

I'm upgrading from a D3300 with a view to pro work - events, weddings, portraits, whatever - and I'm leaning towards the D500. The additional cost of good glass, however, means that I'd have to wait a while to acquire my second D500 body. Do you think that two D7200's would be a more sensible option at this point?

I too have noticed more battery drain on mine than the D810, mainly when the display is on. I wonder if the increased resolution touchscreen uses significantly more power than the screens in previous models and that's leading to the battery life issues...

You might want to try the D500 with the Voightlander 20mm prime. It is an FX lens, but in a crop sensor that is a 30mm equivalent. The Voightlander is super sharp. It is manual focus. But I am expecting that in wide shooting most of the time you would shoot landscaping so the lens can almost always be defaulted to infinity. I've been shooting the D500 with a 200-500mm and TC1.4 and it is amazing. I will be using it for the first time later today to shoot a baseball game with a 80-200mm D-series lens.

I had gotten the D500 a month ago and was trying to shoot the full moon with the 70-300mm. Even on a tripod I was surprised that I couldn't get a tack sharp image. I had read previously where a lot of lenses aren't sharp at the full focal lengths and at their largest and smallest apertures. However, out of frustration I accidentally switched the D500 to Qc mode (Quiet shutter.) I got a tack sharp image. Thinking this was a fluke, I switched back and forth between Ch and Qc. I could NOT get a tack sharp image with Ch at 300mm; even with VR and on a tripod. With Qc I was able to get a tack sharp image. Then it dawned on me. Apparently, the D500's super, lightening fast shutter speeds cause enough internal vibration to throw off sharpness at that magnification. The "Quiet" shutter doesn't cause as much or any vibration so the sharpness is near perfect. Something to think about if you have long focal lengths and have short shutter speeds.

Snapchick, for your battery issue, there are two revisions of the EN-EL15: Li-Ion01 and Li-Ion20, which have different CPUs and a slightly different battery cell design. The upshot is that the Li-Ion20 are newer are hold up better to continuous drain, such as from your V1's or your D500 running in video mode. There's a noticeable (though less substantial than you're describing) difference in battery life shooting video or live view or anything that requires the sensor stay powered on, on every Nikon body I've used that uses EN-EL15 batteries. Since you're a long time user of the EN-EL15, most of yours are probably Li-Ion01's like mine are ... can you check the stamp when you put them in and see how each handle?

Enjoyed your review. Thank you for providing it. I'm late to this party, but purchased this camera this year because of a recent sale with free vertical grip. I own a full frame Nikon. As much as I love my full frame, I find myself reaching for this little beast unless desiring wide angle shots. I agree, that the shutter release and responsiveness is so quick that I have to be very careful of the pressure placed on the shutter button. There is something esthetically pleasing (not sure what it is) about the low and less noisy hum of the 10 FPS. Even with EN-EL15 batteries I do not appreciate any buffer lag. I agree with you on wait for playback. I'm not sure if that would improve with the EN-EL18C (new) batteries that increase the FPS on the D850. I realize it won't increase the FPS (just provide longer shooting - which you wanted), but I'll have to test out if there is any improvement in playback speed (doubt this). I'll amend this if I can get an answer.

I have only drained the battery in my 2 day old D500 once. I had lots of time in live view and menu and lots of on time while referencing the manual, so it's hard to judge for sure but I think the short life may push me into getting the grip with the larger battery. After 3 recharges to break-in the battery, and get some more typical usage time in, I'll let you know if I still feel the same.

My comment may come a bit late, but...heyyy!!! what the heck!!! Was a drone pilot before, until mid last year I started to fall in love with DSLRs. And so as a newbie, I got myself a used D5200 as a starter. Used it mainly for sports photography, right until last month when I realized my D5200 isn't cut-out for the job anymore. Did some (quite extensive actually) research on what my next upgrade would be, and finally decided to go for D750, obviously because of the full frame factor. I was about to buy the unit, until a good friend of mine, who used to shoot on a D3s came up and convince me to go for D500, due to the nature of what I like to shoot. Long story short, after watching some reviews, and thanks to you @TheSnapChick, I bought myself a D500. Been having it for almost a month now, and I REALLY FALL IN LOVE with it. The 20.9mp is much more sharper than my previous 24mp D5200, and when I'm shooting sports most of the time, with a super-tele lens, I wouldn't mind too much about not having a full frame body. It is an extremely powerful camera, very robust, and the ergonomics are next to nothing. Looks like I'm gonna be stuck with this D500 for a very long time...hehehe

Regarding battery life, what I've noticed is that when I've gone to a trackday photoshoot with my D500 and the Sigma 150-500mm OS lens, with stabilization in type 1, I had no problems whatsoever of getting 2500 images over the course of 4-5 hours and still have 2 dots left on the battery. With the same lens and my old D300, I think I got a little over half that, unfortunately I don't remember if that was just from one battery, or if that was from both batteries (I have a battery grip on the d300, haven't bothered shelling out for one for the D500 yet, and at this point I'm not sure I even want to). In short, I think the battery life is absolutely fine. I haven't done 4K video, though.

Snapchick, nice review, appreciate your time in making it. I actually sold my D4 to get a D500. Found I was using my D810 more on weddings and events. Plus the D4 shutter sound reminds me of when I used to chop wood (Ka-CHUNK!). Otherwise I loved the D4, but as of late I have wanted a little extra reach with my newer 80-400, and 600 f/4 VR. So all that was the reason to trade out the D4 for the D500. Anyway on the battery, I found by turning on Airport mode, my battery last longer (especially since I have an iPhone and Snapbridge doesn't work with it yet). I also found the older D810 battery (Li-ion01) battery to not last as long and also give me incorrect battery readings. The newer battery that comes with the D500 (Li-ion02) lasts longer. I also understand as of late, that Nikon will trade out the version 1 batteries for the version 2. I will be checking on that later today after work. Thanks again for the review!

Look at high ISO shots between them and the D500 is much cleaner. Every review states the tracking in low light is just phenominal. So good it doesn't even need an assist lamp. I shoot mostly sports and wildlife so this is really a no brainer. Hopefully I'll have one in hand soon.

SnapChick, I went to an introductory class for new Nikon D500 owners put on by two Nikon reps in San Jose, CA a couple weeks ago. I talked to one of them after the class about the battery life. Telling him that it didn't last as long as the 7D2. He told me that when I am not using the wifi/SnapBridge feature to transfer images, to put the camera into "Airplane mode", this prevents the WiFi from constantly searching for a connection. This helped with the Battery life. Still, the battery life isn't great, but it's noticeably better in airplane mode.

Thanks for the review. My question is: How do I use speedlights off camera on the D500? I've been shooting events (indoor and out), as well as indoor portraits with my 750 for a couple years now, and prior to that, used the life out of a beloved D90 and 7100. I shoot with the D750 primarily and use both high-powered strobes or various speedlights, on and off camera. I picked up the D500 in early summer 2016, and absolutely love it for birding and other wildlife. My only issue with the 500 is that it does not work with my SB700 flash, nor my cheaper speedlights or larger strobes. Any info on this? Having trouble finding solutions. Even the couple Amazon listings suggest the SB910 or SB500 or 5000, but they all claim to only work on-board.

Hi SnapChick many thanks for this good review. I do have some more questions about the camera, maybe you include that already in your future review: 1) How does that wireless connectivity perform (snapbridge). Is it very easy to connect to your cell phone or kind of tricky ? Does it work stable ? 2) Is there any possibility to save any settings in that camera and recall them easily ? i mean like the 7000 or 600 series and the D750 have that U1 and U2 dial ?

A note about batteries. The D500 comes with a EN-EL15 Li-ion20 battery. If you have batteries from your older D7x00, D8x0, they may be Li-ion01's. The 01's seem to report less power than the 20's. So I checked my cache of batteries and now I'm only using 20's in the D500 & the OEM grip. So what the 01's actually deliver, I can't say, but if your (older) batteries seem to run down quicker, then take a look at type of battery (next to the battery serial number).

Hey Snapchick, you've done a great review of the D500. One question; how do you feel about FX prime lenses on a crop sensor camera such as this one, provided I take into consideration the way fx lens focal lengths scale on DX sensors. For my purposes at work (product photography) something like the D810 would be ideal. However, I find it hard to justify buying one now considering the d500-a camera I would like to have for fast and light outdoor pursuits or travel and street photography, just came out. I would like to pick up some primes that I could use if we're to upgrade later when and if ever a new D800 or D810 equivalent were to come out. I must also confess that this would be my first DSLR camera. Since photography is something I would in theory need to learn for my job though, I would rather get something like the D500, which my business won't outgrow too quickly. I would appreciate your, and anyone else's feedback on the subject. Thanks

Lack of battery time might be related to the Bluetooth and wifi connectivity also called SnapBridge. I think it's on by default and will certainly drain the battery faster.

April 2024. I just don’t love my Z6 mirrorless, so I’ve sold it & ordered a cheap used D500. I’ve got the 120GB XQD card from the Z6. Turns out I don’t like EVFs & I just like the old DSLRs. My D3S is big & heavy, so I’m hoping the D500 will replace the Z6 & be my new walk-around street shooter.

Did you record this with the D810? Curious because I saw some moraying on your shirt and know the D810 doesn't have the anti-aliasing filter. I personally have never had this problem with my D810 which I guess is a testament to how rare it is.

I think it also worth pointing out the D500 only has 16mm of eye relief making it unsuitable for eyeglass wearers like myself. You just can't see the edges or corners of the frame the way you can with the superior 21mm eye relief of the D750 as an example. So if like me you wear glasses it is something to take into account.

SnapShick, would you recommend this to someone who have shot film for their entire photography life? I have a few old manual SLR lenses, including a Tamron SP Adaptall-2 35-80mm f2.8-3.5, that I got from my grandfather (all f-mount). I like to shoot portrait and landscape and would like to try some cosplay photography at some conventions this year. Thanks in advance!

Great video, thanks a lot. I ordered a D500 two days ago along with a Nikon 300mm PF VR lens. Although I used a company Nikon many years ago I have never owned one until now. What does surprise me with many Nikon owners responding to the D500 reviews on You Tube, is their need to keep asking how good the IQ is compared to a D750. The D500 and D750 are not in direct competition: the D500 is an APS-C camera designed for sports/wildlife and the D750 is FF and designed for taking photographs in the studio or landscapes etc. I have also read many other comments complaining about the price of the D500. The short answer to that is - don't buy one then. I have bought mine specifically for wildlife - it will compliment my Olympus EM1's very well in the specific areas of BIF, flying insects and shooting in close woodland. I can even use my existing fast SD cards.

Matt: Rubbish weather here in the UK for the last month but I have been able to get out and use my D500, 300mm PF VR + 1.4TC 111 and this combination is brilliant. It really is lightweight and compliments my EM1 cameras and M43 lenses beautifully. The D500 is truly amazing for BIF. I am hitting over 90% in focus (judged by clarity of subjects eye). I set mine up as follows: 1/1250 - 1/1600th, f8 - f11 and auto ISO + compensation depending on colour of bird. I have only used group focus points with CAF at the moment but will try 3D. I was surprised by a buzzard being chased by a crow in a treeline the other day. Pointed the camera at them, no hesitation from the focusing system, it completely ignored the background clutter and did not miss one shot - all were keepers. I have them on my ePHOTOzine portfolio should you wish to view them. I now carry the D500 and one EM1 on my Cotton carrier with the other EM1 in my backpack. I would run out of superlatives for the D500 and for me, and I stress me, I have the perfect wildlife system. I have yet to use the lens without the 1.4TC attached.

@TheSnapChick - I agree with you about the battery life of the D500. It seems like the battery drains a lot quicker in Stills and Video mode compared to my D750. Even shooting for a few hours in the studio, my D500 had 75% battery remaining while shooting for the same period, my D750 still had about 87%. Very strange, I was planning to pick up the MB-D17 and the Nikon D4s battery to add to my D500, but the MB-D17 is so rare in Australia at the moment (pretty much non-existent). Hoping to get one soon! No doubt the D500 is a amazing camera, I actually enjoy using it more than my D750 and it replaces my Nikon D3s. Just wish the usage of the battery is more efficient, and I hope to grab a MB-D17 soon with the BL5 & EN EL 18a.

Some here mentioned fast sharp glass. Sigma 17-50 2.8 is 15mp the tamron 70-200 2.8 18mp samyang 14mm 2.8 18mp. Dxo rates say the tamron 70-200 2.8 at 28mp ff. Not that the glass is faster but revers the crop factor to get the higher mp count. DX has fast sharp glass. You just have to look.

Love your presentation. Very correct in that choice of camera or for that matter, any equipment, is about personal shooting style and subject. I was about to buy the D7200 to replace my D300S when news of the D500 was released. The price admittedly, made me hesitate, even though I was certain that the image quality will surpass what I'm accustomed to. Now after watching your videos covering those aspects of camera handling that's important to me like the grip ergonomics( I use a hand strap rather than a neck strap), control placement, AF speed and accuracy, I think the D500 is worth the premium. Thanks for your sharing :- )

Thumps up for your video! Question: I had the D5500 and just upgraded to the D5600, I only have the 50mm f/1.8...I can see you like the 35mm,,, now my question is: Since we are using crop sensor btw the 35mm and 50mm which one you prefer? ( I just answered my question saying that It seems that you like the 35mm lol, but still want your advice) I really like your videos with feedbacks. Note: I'm not a professional in photography but I really like the results of a crop sensor with a 50mm, but I don't like that I need to step back a little bit to take a group picture..would that be the same with the 35mm + D5600? Really appreciate your advice. :)

Agreed regarding the battery life. Especially when snapbridge is activated. So I would suggest picking two batteries when going out. Also agreeing on DX lenses. Nikon needs to work on this. For the rest I had the 300s for years and am overall very pleased and impressed with this baby.

Thanks for this review.. I have the D610 and i want to upgrade.. I like the D500 overall performance.. But i don't shoot in iso more than 6400 and i will not need to shoot over the 12k.. And i notice that the D750 have much cleaner images in low iso performance.. If you put 2 photos in comparison between each camera you will find images from D750 is much cleaner than D500 in the images upto iso 12800

The battery life on my D500 is not particularly good. In fact, the battery life on the Canon 7D2 is longer lasting. This is usually not the case for a Canon battery to outlast a Nikon. Snapchick, I think both of our results with shortened battery life on the D500 are typical, not problematic. For reasons I don't know the D500 sucks up the battery power. I always carry a spare.

I just [urchased a D500. I had a shoot the very next day so, I did take the D500 but just as a backup camera (THANK GOD FOR THAT). I had the strangest experience, I put an SB 700 on the D500 and put it on AUTO TTL, guess what, the flash wouldn't fire! Yesterday for my next shoot, I faced the same issue. So, I made a small change in the Flash. I put the flash on MASTER, and it started working fine. Is this how it's supposed to happen or is it a glitch only with my camera? Please advise. Th second issue, I set the camera to use the SD card as a "Back up RAW" (as using that in my laptop is easier, but when I inserted the SD in my laptop, there were no pictures in there. Its not backing up. Glitch? Or should I take it for repairs?

yup, thats the way it works on the D500. This has been the biggest disappointment for me, in order to get TTL you'll have to upgrade your flash. I'm looking at the Godox TT680N

Battery life is an issue between the Version 1 and Version 2 of the EN-EL15. Older Version 1 batteries are causing the issue. Nikon have released a firmware update for this
@hogtownrocketsled
@hogtownrocketsled 8 жыл бұрын
It has an issue with older Li-ion01's. The new batteries are Li-ion20's. (01 and 20) There is no firmware upgrade for this. Nikon will exchange older EN-EL15 Li-ion01's for the newer EN-EL15 Li-ion20's for D500 owners.
