Nikon has been making some waves in the mirrorless world but their DSLR cameras still stand the test of time. In this episode, I discuss the two cameras' differences, similarities, and which to choose if you are wondering if it's time to go mirrorless or not.

Sorry for the lack of example photos. This video was meant to be more of a discussion on the cameras and I was unable to get side-by-side comparison photos during my time with both cameras. I post photos I capture with all cameras I use to my social media, the Ditch Auto website, and the Ditch Auto Facebook Group.

Update: The DX lenses will work on the Z6 although it will put the Z6 in crop mode. This is not idea as it lowers the resolution to around 10MP. At the time I filmed this video, there was no mention of support for DX lenses with the F Mount Lens Adapter on the Nikon website. This is better than not getting to use your DX lenses at all on the Z6, but obviously not an idea situation for utilizing your Z6 to its full capabilities.

Good video. Already made my choice. Rocking my D500 and D750. Not buying the Z6 or Z7 or Z50 or D780. If the D780 was exactly like the D500 and D850 design with joystick and battery grip I would have replaced my D750 with one.

If a DX F mount lens is used with the FTZ adapter on the Z7 body, the image will have the same size and pixel density as the D500.

D500 for over a year now. Although it's a dx-format the image quality is unreal. Low light capability unreal. Availability of lenses holy smokes almost anything Nikon made will work with this camera. Tons and tons of inexpensive lenses for the D500. All in all in a year I've done about 15,000 shots with it and I I'm looking for used ones I want to make sure I have plenty of these in my bag and prices are coming way down on the d500. The mirrorless cameras yeah they're great but as far as capability and durability and flexibility nothing beats the D500

I have the Z6 II and the D500..... Now comparing these 2 is even a tougher choice as the new Z6 II shoots very fast and I shoot mostly sports and some landscape/wildlife.. The D500 is a very big beast, but some of the newer lenses for the 6II are amazing I would have to say I am liking the Z6 II more lately.

I upgraded my aging D7000 (with over 170k shutter count) to D500 half a month ago. Everyone at my work keep asking why I wouldn't get the "full frame", namely the newer Z6, the cheaper D750 or the extraordinary D850. My answer is clear. The mirrorless Z6 isn't right answer. Having a shooting session from morning till late afternoon, maybe another session from evening till midnight may be too harsh with any mirrorless camera. While the battery life is always a problem, the smaller body and poor balance with bigger lens are real serious problems for shooting a long session. I feel more comfortable with a combination of DSLR, big and heavy lens, battery grip and flash. Its price is another problem, I can get the body and 24-70 f4, but that is all I can. No fast lens. No smaller flash. Putting DSLR flash on mirrorless just make the whole package getting worst and worst for long shooting session. The D750 is very promising. It's full frame. It's a nice allrounder camera. A very capable camera. Moreover, if I looked for used, I could buy the D750 and the 3rd party 24-70 f2.8 which is cheaper than my current combination of D500 and Nikon 17-55. But I prefer the speed, the versatility and the build quality of D500 over the full frame sensor. So, The D500 wins. The D850 is too much. Too much money to spend. Too much MP to use. It's a high resolution beast, not the high speed beast I really need. I know the DX crop mode works almost exactly the same as D500. But why should I pay more money to get what I can get from cheaper D500? I work as a highschool teacher, but photographing is a part of my work as teacher too. I have to deal with any situations from shooting sport in broad daylight to shooting ceremony in dimly lit auditorium and outdoor party at night. Comparing to my old gears (D7000 and Sigma 18-35 f1.8), my current gears (D500 and Nikon 17-55 f2.8) is incredibly versatile. Working in low light is fine. AF is fast and accurate even in low light with mix light source. The 1.5x from DX sensor and 1.3x crop mode add more versatility. It seems like I have universal zoom lens with effective focal lenght of 26-105mm that can shoot almost situations (for highschool) in low light. For sport shooting, just get the cheap stabilized 70-300mm, it become 105-450mm on DX and 135-585mm in 1.3x mode. That is long enought for shooting soccer or other outdoor sport while maintaining a small package that can shoot handheld. Actually, you can crop in post process, but the 1.3x help reduce the need of post process and I can simply send the pictures to my phone, post it on school's page and my work is done. Sometimes, fast and short workflow is crucial. In that regard, I guess D500 is a great tool. Ps. I KNOW ABOUT "EQUIVALENT". I know that my 55mm ISO200 f2.8 works almost exactly the same as 85mm ISO100 f4 on full frame, in term of "FoV", "Noise" and "DoF". But in my work, Noise and DoF are not the first priority, getting the pictures (or not) is the first priority.

Not only do DX lenses work on the Z6 (using the FTZ adaptor), they benefit from the in body image stabilization (IBIS) in the Z6, as well as the newer sensor and processing technology. In my experience, photos taken with DX lenses on the Z6 look better than on DX camera bodies, as long as you don't pixel peak or crop to some ridiculous degree - and even then, the photos often look better, or at least just as good. That being said, I did sell all of my DX gear (I had a lot) as there is no reason, other than the 1.5 crop factor which provides more reach, to use DX gear on a full frame camera.

It’s interesting that you say older Nikon cameras were not good at low light , did you ever try the old D3S , even some new cameras can’t hold up with the D3S in low light . I have the D500 and Z6 and some other Nikon DSLR , the Z6 is nice but my D500 feels better in my hands because of the ergonomics ,I have more fun with the D500 , the files from the Z6 have more colour noise but there is more room for post processing , what’s interesting I have sometimes hot pixels with the Z6 when using electronic shutter . autofocus is better in the D500 , I enjoy both there are great tools. What nobody understands that a mirrorless camera is not a replacement for a DSLR !

Nikon has always dominated in low light - this statement was categorically false (I'm actually really curious where he derived this conclusion). The D3, D700, D600, D750, D850, D4 and D5 were better than all comparable cameras of their time (the D800/810 not so much). Sony made a really good low light camera - but there's a reason that NASA has used D3-D5 almost exclusively. The D750 is still an incredible low light camera (stomps the 5D IV which is a generation newer (comparable in ISO - but way better in low light focusing)).

Exactly!!! Mirrorless is not a replacement for DSLRs. It disgusts me when I see people wish death on DSLRs, almost as though they think their opinion is universal. Unless a camera is released that sports both an OVF and an EVF, I'm sticking with DSLRs.

I have used my older Nikon D7100 in extreme low light of bowling centers without a flash and in clubs shooting concerts. The performance is excellent. I hear a lot of people talk about bad low light performance??? I have even used my really old D70s in clubs with no flash and the performance is still good. I would really like to see an example of someone having problems in low light. Now if you are shooting a birthday party in your living room with no flash and getting bad pictures that's your fault.

There’s very few dx lenses worth a damn. There’s the 17-55 2.8 and Tamron has a good wide angle zoom. The 35 1.8 dx is only good because it’s cheap. There’s also a 10.5 fisheye, if you know... you’re into fisheyes. Otherwise, none of the other dx lenses are worth holding you back from any other camera body. (I know Sigma has some 1.8 zooms, but I had problems with consistent focus on them). The FTZ opens up Z and fx lenses, without the mentioned drop in resolution from cropping with dx lenses. So for variety of lenses, I think the Z would win. Especially considering the Z lenses are (reportedly at least, I don’t know personally) much better than any fx counterparts. And if you’re considering either a D500 or Z6 and price difference in lenses is a factor, you should probably be considering a different camera body... or a different hobby. Just my worthless 2 cents 🙂

I had used Sigma 18-35 f1.8 on my D7000 for years, then traded it off for used Nikon 17-55 f2.8 when I replaced the D7000 with D500. The 17-55 is a better choice for sure. It is far more reliable and I rarely experienced focus issues comparing to the extremely unreliable "hit or miss" Sigma 18-35. But, well, I sometimes miss the 18-35. Truth to be told, I really think the 18-35 is better than the 17-55 in almost every aspects except for focus consistency and focusing speed. (and yes, 17-55 looks better) It was a perfect lens when it focused properly, then become a piece of trash when it randomly stopped focusing while you were shooting one in a lifetime moments. With FTZ adapter and benefit of mirrorless camera (less focus issues comparing to DSLR), I wonder how exceptional the 18-35 could be on newer Nikon mirrorless cameras.

Don't get that low light thing on mirrorless that's not the case mirrorless have never been better, you have a canon background so yes with canon I agree but sony before their bsi sensor where not better than nikon dslr! Have had the a7II and compared to my d750 nothing was better, same overall quality with a bit less "good color science for the sony", appart from the sony a7s which is effectively better, but with pixel density never make a better print! Today it is proved that mirrorless are worth in higher iso than dslr with no phase detect af on sensor, because of banding issues, so I don't know in which case a mirrorless is better in low light! To finish Nikon never disappointed in low light since their first full frame exmor, the d750 still one of the best perfoming camera in low light, the a7 III is better but is not there until 6 years! Anyway just was wondering what make you think that thing, beause for me if it is a mirrorless that is better in low light than dslr is the panasonic s1 or s1h because no phase af ruining the sensor capacities in low lights.

Z6 is better in terms of high ISO IQ, video features, future Z mount glasses with better IQ, scope of improvement with firmware updates and EVF (for those who like it and accept the lagging).... for rest of the important areas like continuous auto focus performance, buffer, dual cards, 10fps mechanical shutter, balance with long telephoto, crop factor for long distance shot etc. D500 is much better. So, for wildlife and sports D500 is still unbeaten and it's high ISO IQ is better than any crop sensor dslr in the market (so the price).

I think the D750's are one stop better in low light over the D850's. The problem was that you could not set the ISO as low. And now the D780 is even better in low light. And has the D500 / D850 extended ISO setting range.

Bro you completely glazed over the fact the DSLR cameras have LV (live view) that is exactly the same as an EVF just 4x bigger. They've had this since the D3, D300, D700 era and if you wanted to have it up to your eye there was a item that allowed the LCD screen to become a viewfinder. Battery life on DSLR cameras still do 3x to 4x better. I don't have an issue with either. I do actually like the weight of a D3s or pro body DSLR which allows for very good balance and I can shoot as low as 1/25 without IBIS or VR with my old Non-Ai 50mm F2 which is the equivalent of a Leica Summicron 50mm F2. I bought mirrorless and I didn't like them and I wanted to. I think I've been spoiled with being able to shoot 4000 images per charge vs a few hundred.

Ah yes the 50mm auto H f/2 , the japanese summicron. I converted a pre AI version to use on my D700. Man do i love the way it renders

The most shots per charge come from my D7000, the first version of en-el15 shot over 6k with few percentage left. That was extreme situation that I shot sport nonstop. For normal use, 1k-1.2k shots per charge can be expected. On my D500, I have got 3.5k shots with over 50 pencent left. For mirrorless (not Nikon) with EVF I have used, shooting nonstop give me slightly over 500 shots. For normal shooting, hardly passes 350 shots.

apsc vs full frame?....are you okay broo?

Full frame isn’t everything. There is more to performance and there’s a reason why the d500 outperforms the d5 in image quality and the d850 in autofocus.

On the one hand, you have a camera that is really good for large BIF's on simple backgrounds and most of other sports action. Average or worse for anything else photography, and sucks at video. On the other hand, you have a camera that is actually better at small BIF's on complex backgrounds and holds its own in many sports action situations. Head and shoulders better at everything else photography, and then its also one of the best video cameras on the market. So, how much more would you pay for the second camera that is so much damn better than the first camera? Umm, actually not any extra money when you go all in with the grips and whatnot. But the first camera can also use the new glass, right? Umm, no, sorry, it cant. Only the second camera can use the old and the new glass. In fact, the second camera, in theory, can also adapt everyone elses glass including Canon RF. But Nikon does a really good job of releasing firmware updates and other improvements to the first camera? Oh, yeah, no, they dont do that either. Only the second camera keeps getting firmware updates with new cool features like animal eye AF. So why would anyone buy the old camera in 2020? Thats actually a really good question.

Dude, your Being totally biased. When the z6 is weaker your omit things and give wing info For example, you talk about the z6 12fps but in 8 bit then you say 10fps and 12 bit for the D500 but it is 14 bit LOSSLESS compressed. And you said 200 frame buffet but you just say I can't get 200... Why don't you day what you do get at the crappy 8bit? Try 5 to 6 frame buffer. Totally useless review. It's just a spec review not useable and you're making one sided Anna failing at that.

You need to inform your self about low light shooting... Definitely z6 is far better then D500 in low light according to DXO. Actually much better. It is only z6 and Df have good low light performance. All rest of Nikon are way behind Sony. I would suggest you to do home work before you start giving us fake info. And you talk a lot for no reason. You are not lecturing us you comparing the two cameras. So talk should be avoid as much as possible and replace with visual testing...remember you are dealing with images not conversation.. Just for your sake. otherwise people will cut you out and see you boring...And your memo should be in front of you not on the table...Review camera with out visual comparison from shooting is not good review...
