Master Back Button Focus On your Nikon Camera and you'll never regret that you did; might take a bit to get used to it though.
Back Button Focus comes handy when you are in a situation where you have to shoot a moving object and you are in a stationary position. What happens with your shutter release focusing at this scenario is that, when you press your shutter release every single time, the camera tries to re-focus on your subject. And by this time you subject would have moved to a different point in your frame.
It is true that it take a little practicing to master Back Button Focusing on your Nikon Camera. First off, it is a new muscle training opposed to the normal shutter release focusing. But from my experience, it is worth the trouble.
I hope this video helps you to learn how to do Back Button Focus on all cameras like Nikon D610, Nikon D600, D7100, D5200, D5300 Etc, even though i use Nikon D610 in this video to demostrate how to setup Back Button Focus on a Nikon Camera.

Great explanation! You missed one thing though. The big advantage of using back button focus is to use it in combination with AF-C, otherwise it has no advantages.

My D7200 has a different sub menu than displayed. I selected the same setting, but now I get focusing with both the shutter release and back button. Not what I had in mind.

+Glenn Gayle You also have to go into the (A) Autofocus menu to AF Activation (A4) and select AF-ON Only.

The disadvantage of this function is that you can also take a shot when the photo is not yet sharp. So if you are not yet used to using the back focus button, you will probably regularly take blurry photos in the beginning
