Nikon D7000 Vs Nikon D90: 10 Key Features That Set Them Apart!

I remember when the D7000 was introduced. I was in Manila, Philippines at the time, and went to the Mall of Asia to do some shopping. I saw a line coming out the door and up the block. I asked what the line was for, and was told that the mall's main camera store had the new D7000 in stock for the first time, and everyone who was serious about photography was there to see it. I made a mental note to come back when it wasn't so crowded to see the new Nikon. I came back the following week and got to handle the new camera. I knew right then that I would own one. The store only had the one demo model, a long waiting list, and was requiring 100% payment up front to get on the list. So I passed, and decided to get one back in the U.S. I considered the then-new D3000 and D5000 as well, but decided to spend a bit more for a camera with a focus motor in it. I think I have easily saved the price of the new camera by being able to use Nikon AF-D and manual focus lenses. The sensor of the D7000 is not so demanding that it shows up flaws in some of those older lenses. The D7000 also didn't feel like a toy, unlike lesser cameras. Since then, I've owned several D7000's. I suppose I have been fortunate in that I have never experienced any focusing issues with the three that I have owned. In fact, the only issue I've ever had was with one where the second card slot failed. This was easily repaired. I also owned the D7100 and the D7200, which were both great cameras and perhaps more capable, but I found that I preferred the look of the images from the D7000. The last one I purchased was bought from a professional photographer who got it as a back-up body and had barely used it. It was still like new in the box with 350 shutter activations. It seems to have been made late in the production of the model after focus issues were resolved. I paid $300 for it with a Nikon battery grip three years ago. I use it as my daily work camera and it has never let me down. The D7000 is available now so inexpensively that I'm thinking of getting another one simply as a spare. I find the D7000's 16mp sensor to be more than enough for me, and I have a lot of 13X19 inch framed prints from it on my wall that people seem to like. I think many people may dismiss the D7000 as "old tech", but I love mine and it isn't going anywhere.

Wow thank you for the really neat story. I have a Nikon 28-105 AFD lens. It is one of my favorite lenses that I use all the time. So I do know what you are talking about as far as the older lenses go. So many people really love this camera, I really do think that its one of the best cameras that nikon has made. You are lucky that you got such a great deal on this camera from the photographer. I was thinking of getting another D7000 body myself, just because of how much I really love this camera. @@Kris_World I am a huge fan of the 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 zoom. I have a D700 as well, and that lens lives on it. It is sharp, renders colors beautifully, doesn't have anything inside that is likely to break, and is dirt cheap. I have tested it side-by-side with the 24-70 f2.8 that everyone raves about, and can see little if any difference. As you may know, the more modern AF-S zooms almost all have crazy levels of distortion, which nobody cares about because modern Nikons correct this automatically in-camera. But the D700 doesn't. The 28-105 has almost no distortion so I don't have to correct for it when I use it on the D700. I stumbled on to another great older lens, on a recommendation from a British photographer who runs a channel called JK Lenses. It is the old Nikon 18-70 f3.5-4.5 DX lens. This one gives the same angle of view on DX as the 28-105 on FX. It is very well made, but nobody wants it because it doesn't have VR. You can buy a clean one for $40 if you shop a bit. Mine now lives on my D7000. And I've been using an absolutely fantastic telephoto zoom, bought for peanuts, that is so good that I gave up hauling around a monster-sized f2.8 lens. It is the 70-210 f4 AF-D constant aperture zoom. Not to be confused with the much more common 70-210 f4-5.6. The constant aperture model was only made from 1986-88 I believe, and a clean one can be had for $100. Set to 180mm and F4, it is a wonderful portrait lens. Autofocus is very accurate, but just a bit slow. By contrast, the F4-5.6 focuses very fast, but sloppy. It is great for sports in good light. If you haven't tried the F4, I think you will like it. Images from it look just like the 28-105 color-wise. I just got a second copy of the lens for $60, just in case something happens to my first one. Thanks for the reply, take care of yourself!

Thank you for all the great information! The D700 is a legend Nikon camera, one I would love to get my hands on someday to see how it performs. Hopefully there will be one left for me to use. All the ones I have found are all very used and have a very high shutter count. I'll look into the 18-70 as I am always looking for a bargain. The 70-210 F4 is definitely a lens that I have had my eyes on but somehow seem to miss a good one when I think of it. I think it would be a great addition to my camera case. Most of these experts push their favorite camera. I shoot single so 6 fps or 4 fps mean nothing to me , in 60 years of photography I caint remember ever needing a shutter speed over 1000, I have a 90. 200, 300s, 7000, 7100, and 600. I use the D200 and D600 more than any of the rest because I like them

On the mode dial of the D-7000, there is the "effects" option. What can you do with that?

@dt10539 Hi, so the effects option on the dial of the D7000 is basically like auto modes for certain situations, kind of like a point and shoot camera. It configures your ISO, Shutter, and Aperture and White balance automatically. I personally have never used this feature because I use the manual settings on my camera all the time, but I'll have to explore this a little further to see what it all about. Excellent review of both cameras. I have owned copies of both models and really loved the D90, it was like a miniature D700/D3. The D7000 on the other hand I have had a love hate relationship, I have over the years owned several copies and the D7100 also. Both of these cameras suffered back/front focus issues, meaning that unless you stopped down significantly the pictures taken tended to be soft, I was limited to using a maximum of F4 at normal 'portrait' distances. Later I had a D7200 and D7500, both of these did not suffer from this issue. I know you can adjust and fine tune focus on these cameras but I found the adjustment required was just not significant enough, therfore I went with increasing the depth of field instead.

Thank you so very much! I have always loved the D90. I have never really found anything wrong with it, its a great performer. When I received my D7000 I actually had a problem with focusing where my selection in my viewfinder would never come out focused after I took the picture. It always would be out of focus even on a tripod. So I looked up on internet how to use my fine tune focus setting for my lens and I did an adjustment by focusing on fine lines on a piece of paper. I adjusted the setting + or - depending on where my focus was compared to the line. After I did this, it seemed to correct the problem and I have not had a problem since. I have been hearing both sides for this camera, of people saying that it works great, and others say there is a problem. I’m not sure if it could be settings in the camera menu they are using, or an actual problem with the camera they might own, or a firmware update. What camera do you have now? Hi I now use a D750 and a D3s, the D3s is for wildlife the D750 for normal use, I have used Sony and Canon, but prefer the raw files from out of the Nikon. As an aside I also like the Nikon 1 cameras. I have a J1 model and love the raw files from that at a 100 iso, if its poor light the pop up flash is excellent.

Much like Jonathan, I had a D7000 for a few years before I traded it in for a D3S. It was a reasonably decent walkabout camera but the AF was an issue with pretty much all lenses until they were configured with 'AF Fine Tune'. I did the firmware updates which helped with distortion control, but I noticed the AF with my 35mm 1.8G DX lens was completely wrecked and could not be dialled out. This was where I jumped ship as the D3S came up at a decent price. I've kept my original camera for general snaps which is a gripped D3000, so now I have a choice of 'Full Fat D3' or 'Dinky D3'.

@jonathan eddolls Wow those are both great cameras and I am sure they are both a joy to use. Especially the fast shutter speed of the D3s. Someday when they go down in price a little more, I’d love to purchase one just see the true performance of a professional full frame camera. Not that I don’t enjoy my little crop sensor D7000 I just love the idea of someday having one. I never heard of the Nikon 1 cameras until you mentioned it. I looked up the J1 and can see it actually takes really nice photos. I might just have to add it to my camera collection someday. While the D80 has a CCD image sensor and amazing image quality the D7000 is that and more. Its features enable you to expand your skill even further and help you develop into your style even faster. Both really good starter cameras, but even now in 2024, the D90 still produces stunning looking pics, as does the D7000. Love my old D90, it seems to have a quality about the look of the images which have a look of their own - namely beautiful!

@Rod Atienza I feel that comparing the different generation of cameras is very important even to show where the D7000 came from. So yes comparing the D7000 to the D7100 and the D7200 is a fantastic idea and I would totally make the video, the only problem is I don't own those cameras and don't have the funds to do so at the moment. @swapniltinkhede Hi Swapnil! The Nikon D90 is an excellent camera and produces some really amazing images, but if you want a camera that has more functionality then go for a D7000. @Richard Sailo Hi Richard, I would say that both cameras are great cameras but if you want to be able to fine tune more of your settings and have more megapixels to work with then I would defiantly recommend the Nikon D7000. So It's all about what suits you as well. So if you are looking for something newer and a camera that has more setting adjustments and a higher megapixel count then I would say that the Nikon D7000 is better. The colors are deeper and I feel that the images have a little more depth. The Nikon D7000 also has distortion correction build in. So that is defiantly a plus. Hope this helps. Kris

More than a decade back while I was in Belgium, I had the D90 and hated the 200 base ISO and the 1/4000 shutter, it just won't cut it for sometimes vs. the base 100 ISO and 1/8000 sec...it was sometimes overexposing with lots of blown highlights...traded it for the the D7000 and took a massive hit ( camera shop priced it at around a low ball-ish Euro 300 ) ..it was worth it I think despite being ripped off. Yeah now in 2022, currently own two Z mirrorless, z5 and Z6ii and two full frame Nikon DSLRs (D810 and D750) I think the colours and dynamic range of the D7000 can still hold its own despite being a 12 year old tech, I just pair it with SIGMA ART lenses and it still produces amazing results! I still use my D7000 from time to time because it has a significant place in my heart and was the camera that propelled my interest in photography more than any Nikons I've owned

@Neth BT Wow that's a cool story, I am sorry you got ripped off though. Yes the limiting factor of the Nikon D90 for ISO settings and the speed of the shutter can limit a user in some factors which the D7000 propels on. That is so cool! I would love to get my hands on a Nikon mirrorless camera one day, I've heard many good things about them. The D7000 can really do a lot for its age. It's image quality can be comparable to a full frame sensor in some cases as well. I'm not familiar with the Sigma Art lenses, I'll have to look into them. Thank you so much for watching my video. @@Kris_World SIGMA ARTs are the best value lenses today esp. in the used marked... I have owned high end Nikkors that costs 3X as much (85mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 Nikkors) and the equivalent ART lens are sharper and warmer...traded the Nikkors with Z bodies coz I can't justify keeping them...you need to try the 35mm Art as a start! These are the only primes that youll ever need coz there will be NO PROBLEM adapting them when you eventually migrate to mirrorless. You'll save money in the long run. Native mirrorless enses are only beneficial for video. Right now I currently own 12 F mount lenses and only 1 cheapo Z native 40mm prime...Z lenses are grossly overpriced

I still have and use both cameras the d90 has taken about 3x more images than the d7000 which just after the warranty expired burned out the built in flash (it was not flipped up at the time) and damaged some electronics and needed repairs. I have never had any focus problems and I have found it great for wildlife.

The faster fps of the d7000 does make easier to capture creatures in the wild so you don't miss a shot. You lucked out not having a focus problem on yours. Thank you for a wonderful comparison. I am a D7000 user. Whenever I take a picture, the image is not like what I saw on the viewfinder. For example, I use the viewfinder to set my frame and then click, but the exposure of the result is not the same, either underexpose or overexpose. So, I usually take 3 to 4 pictures to get acceptable exposure. How can I improve it?

You are very welcome! Thank you for watching it. Personally I haven't noticed that while shooting. Also what mode are you shooting in? (M) Manual (A) Aperture Priority (S) Shutter Priority (P) Program mode? Also see if you have bracketing turned on. It sounds like you might. To check this, there is a button right below the flash button on the front left of your camera. It says bkt. Hold down this button. On your top display it should say 0F. If it says 3F move your shutter speed dial on the back of your camera to the left. If it says -2F, move your shutter speed dial to the right.
