+Eddy Brown no, the D610 and 6D are entry level. the D750 was priced and featured to compete with the 5d mkiii. only legitimate feature it lacks is a 1/8000 shutter. they equipped it with their best AF & imaging processor. obviously outdated as of March, a year and half later.

I believe that it was not the case and certainly it's not the case today. The D810 is equivalent to the 5d mkiii. In this moment the D750 cost 500$ less than the 5d, and it does not have a pro body like the Canon you reference. Over time price shifted and know the D810 is more expensive (around 200$) than the 5d mk3.

Well he's not wrong. It's much better to get the good gear right off the bat instead of upgrading to that good year later. Photography is expensive in the first place. When you seriously want to get into it, get a good set up right off the bat. I would remmomenf the nikon z5 or sony A7iii right now. Cannon R is alright also. Get a mirrorless and get a full frame. Yes it's going to be initially more expensive, but your gonna get a lot more value out of the products also. Also new gear retains the value more. Don't get a dslr as prices gonna drop fast as fuck.

I do not agree with Jared. I do own both these cameras, and both of these are different, and cannot be compared against each other except for similar price points. A full frame is a full frame. You do not get (1) Wide sensor (2) Commander flash mode (3) Low light performance (4) Remote shutter trigger (5) 24 mp sensor (6) built-in flash with the D500, but you do with a D750. And on the other side of the coin you won't get (1) 1/8000th shutter speed (2) 10 frames /sec (3) 4k videos (4) These many cross auto focus points (5) ergonomic and convenient button placement (6) zoom as any dx would with a D750. If you would have to choose between these two all what matters the most is "What feature is more important to you".

Anybody calling the D750 a "starter" is a little out of touch with reality. I can't imagine why you'd upgrade from the d750 at the moment, when you call something a "starter" thats assuming you're going to replace it. LOL Jared Polin here has bought into a narrative created by camera companies to sell more products. Remember, the only way to get you to take your wallet out again is to tell you what you're now using is inferior to other products offered by the same company. It's a great selling tactic, but t's intellectually dishonest to actually believe it in practice.

Can't compare these two just by specs. One is FF one is crop. Take the sensor size you want. Both great cameras but for different glass and different shooting situations.

I am a wedding photographer. The D810 - the D850 files are way too big for the event photography I do. I use a D750 - and it is perfect for me for wedding photography. The files are a great size for high work flow. Also I believe the low light capability with the D750 is slightly better than the D850. It just looks better to me. The D500 while a nice camera - is crop. For weddings my 24-70 and 70-200 lenses would look weird on the D500 - depth of field etc would suffer. For what it's worth the D750 is indeed a fine camera and at the end of the day my images are the quality I need from the D750. That is the aspect that matters.

If its cheaper and you dont need the speed and extra reach than the 750 is by far the better camera Full Frame will bring noticably better photos with the right photographer if you are shooting portraits, weddings, people in general ect if you are into extreme sports or wildlife d500 is a clear winner and may be worth the extra money but try to invest in full frame lenses either way as in the future generations full frame will always be superior in one way or another EDIT: additionally from what iv seen the d750 outperforms the d500 (which it should) in high iso and is one of the kings of iso so both are incredible for high iso but ignore all of those extended iso at 25600 both become unusable and you shouldn't go over 6400 MAX anyway

I have been using the D500 for a week with real estate photography. I was real disappointed with ISO over 5000. I felt ripped off. However since then, using low ISO's I have had images with overexposed skies or really underexposed shadow areas and when editing in Lightroom I recovered ALL of these details with EASE. White skies turned blue, black shadow areas lit up in full detail. I couldn't do that with my previous D7100. I can't believe how well I could make a perfect image from what looked like a goof up.!!

you should aim for out of camera results that only need a little work in post. using post processing so much can easily ruin fine details, colors, tonal gradations, and cause unnecessary noise. the d500 is actually not close to the d7200 or D610 or d750 in base iso dynamic range, something that will allow you to recover all those details you spoke of. not saying you don't, but those will be cleaner.

Really? I've had the exact opposite experience. I find the noise to be unacceptable after recovering under exposed images in Lightroom by one half to a full stop for images shot at low ISO values (200, 400, 800). My D500 is going back after having it for 14 days. I have one day left to get it back to the store. I find the D500 consistently under exposes by up to a full stop when in aperture priority mode. I've learned to compensate for this, but I'm still not satisfied with the noise performance at low ISO values.

Of course they'll replace the d750 they sold a ton of them.... Overall I agree for most people the d500 might be better. But for portraits and landscapes the d750 is better. Due to the more shallow DOF you can achieve and wider lenses also the extra 4MP and dynamic range does make a difference.

It depends... I use both extensively. First misconception, DoF has nothing to do with sensor size. It's related to distance, true focal length (Not DX vs FX), and aperture. Do I miss 4MP, your kidding me? DX pixel density more significant even for landscapes. It boils down to FX is better for wide-angle since the DR and ISO are now about equal. Some day a 47MP Nikon with an enlarged D500 sensor. Everyone happy but the pocketbook.

I've tested a canon 85 1.2 vs Fuji 56 1.2 and shot the same subject at the same distance and you can definitely see a huge difference wide open in DOF. Because on apsc the 1.2 translates to 1.8 DoF. What stays the same is exposure.

To get same subject size you would have to change distance or focal length, either would change the Dof. In your case you changed focal length.

When I first started playing guitar I bought a $200 Yamaha. Many years and guitars later I bought a $2,000 Gibson, which I will keep forever. If I'd bought the Gibson on day one I'd have saved a lot of money, but I'd never recommend to someone just starting out that they buy a Gibson. Or a D500. Even though I own and love both.

But once you put full frame lenses on the D500 don't you run into not getting as sharp of results in perceptual megapixels? For example on the Canon side, my 24-70 2.8 ii is really sharp on a Canon 5D Mark iii or a Canon 5DSR, but on the 7D Mark ii it's less sharp than the kit lens resolving only 7 megapixels.... Meaning putting quality glass of 2 grand resolves less than the kit lens of 300 dollars. Resolving 19 megapixels on the 5D iii and around 33 megapixels on the 5DSR. That would be a big deal to me. Unless you need the fast buffer, because I could crop 1.5x and still have more detail, though the sensor will have more detail of the crop camera. If you were doing portraits, not events, or Landscapes wouldn't the D750 be better because of the detail with the lenses? Assuming one is using 2.8 zooms and FX lenses. Also with video, would you choose more resolution over 1080p resolution with a full frame field of view and depth of field? I'd rather have the 1080p. Because the 4k is higher resolution but once you crop that many times thats a really small sensor. I don't mind the super 35mm crop like Sony and Canon does with 4k.

Well how about this. If an fx lens on a dx camera looks really sharp, there shouldn't be a problem. If you start pixel peeping it'll matter, but usually you don't really print pictures or even look at pictures when they are at 100 percent crop.

Skyler King I absolutely use DXOMark, I've found it to be accurate in every test I've done. When I was a beginner I had the original 7D and I bought the 24-70 2.8, this is when the 7D was brand new and I paid 2 grand for that lens and though it would open to 2.8, it wasn't as sharp as APS-C lens. I had no idea why back then. But this is not a claim that DXOMark makes that isn't true. You can waste a lot of money and not get better results. It wasn't until I got the 5D Mark ii that I was able to actually see what the 24-70 2.8 was like. I now have the 24-70 2.8 ii which is extremely sharp for a zoom lens, and I see that it resolves less than the APS-C kit lens on the 7D Mark ii. DigitalRev did a video about this as well. Tony Northup has some good videos about it, where he will provide the Raw files for download if one doesn't believe this has any bearing. It's a pretty big deal to spend 2 grand on a lens and find out it doesn't look any better than what you had. Although Sigma is stepping up and making APS-C glass now, they have a 1.8 zoom now for Nikon and Canon APS-C, but neither Nikon nor Canon stepped up to do it.

The 5DS-R and 7D Mark II have the same pixel size, so at 100% magnification you're viewing both at the same size (you're not enlarging more on one than on the other). There can be other differences like the AA filter (whose effect is cancelled on the 5DS-R, but not on the 7D-II).

after all, its not about choosing the camera.. its about choosing the best camera for YOU... after considering my shoots i am still on d750 coz i take photos and videos.. mostly portraits, wedding, events, club, etc.. and as per my research, i've found that the d750 can give me better results than a d500.. if i was just a widlife/nature photographer i would go with d500... d750 has better dynamic range and performs a bit better than d500 in low light..

I own both D750 and D500 and use both for nature and wildlife. On my recent trip to Yellowstone, I had the Nikon 300 2.8 vrll attached to the D750 and Nikon 70-200 2.8 with the D500. There where times I swapped the lenses on both. For landscapes, I enjoy the full frame and in really low light conditions I still referred back to the D750. This body has already proven itself to me under extreme low light conditions, photographing Lions in South Africa and it kept being a work horse all the the way until the night. The D500 however started becoming my go to body for wildlife simply because of the focusing system performing very fast and obtaining just about every capture in focus. The buffer is what won me over on the D500. For wildlife, its a world of difference.. My only wish would be for the shutter sound to be more like that of the D810. I have encountered wildlife that don't mind flash, but do mind the sound. Either camera works great, it all falls down to your photography.

I have a D750 and although I would like to have the focusing system of the D500, I would not change over to it as I think the D750 is a more well-rounded camera, a jack of all trades, so to speak. The advantages of full frame in terms of optics can simply not be beaten in my view, even by a DX camera one generation ahead. If I were shooting sports or wildlife, the D500 would be a no-brainer, but given I am more into street photography, portraiture and some landscape, the D750 does it for me. What I am really looking forward to is the update to the D750 as I would love to get this new focusing system and hopefully no AA filter...

Well, I purchased the Nikon D750 camera as part of a package (including a lens, memory cards, spare battery, battery grip, rucksack etc..). Overall (including purchase taxes) I am happy with the price. I have some great results from the camera. The still and video quality is great.

First, I do enjoy your videos. You put a lot of production value into them and I appreciate this. But I've got to disagree with you on this. Most of your points are spot on, but the recommendation is where I have most of my beef. I need to set the stage for a moment, so bear with me. I've been shooting Nikon Digital since the D1. I've owned, the D1, 2-D1h's, D2h, D2x, D100, D70, D200, D300, D800 and now I walk out the house with a D750 and a D500 in my kit. I've shot news, sports at all levels, fashion, glamour, wedding and travel/landscape in the past 16 years of Nikon Digtial (and I've got over 35 years of being published and selling photography professionally). I only have full frame glass with most of it being the fixed f2.8 zooms. I loved my D800 right up until it was stolen. But it is not a camera I would recommend for anything beyond low volume shooting, such as travel, landscapes and portraiture (fashion/glam included). For anything that requires large numbers of photos or speed is concerned: weddings, sports, news, event photography the 36mp sensor is too much. The files are too slow to get off the camera, to slow to process and you end up throwing away most of the image because it's just to big. Build wise it was an amazing camera. The time I had it, I was doing a lot of travel and it was the perfect body to shoot sea lions in Morrow Bay or capturing fantastic images of Mt. Baker in Washington state. But I dreaded shooting a 1000+ photo wedding on it. After it got boosted, I replaced it with a D750. Not everyone can afford a D5/D4s when glass is more important. The D810 isn't good for about half the types of photography out there. While I'm disappointed that NIkon chose to put the 750 in a consumer body, for weddings, portraiture, event photography, pretty much everything other than sports, it's probably the camera for any professional that's not doing landscape work or sports work. Even at 6.5 fps, you can still shoot sports. Most people shouldn't be spraying and praying anyway. I'm old school. Let me get it in one shot. Because DOF is different between a DX camera and a full frame camera and the expense of covering the wide side (and it's video is no slouch!) the D750 should still get top-nods not as a beginner camera but one that many professionals should have in their bag. Now no professional should walk on to a job with only one camera. Having a second body is pretty much a requirement (buying 2 - D5's is way out of the question for most people's budgets). I chose to retire my D300 and get a D500 to complement the D750. I have wide angle capacity on the D750, The D500 gives me more telephoto reach. The image sizes are comparable. I just shot a wedding and image size wise, there isn't much of a noticeable difference. The two blended well. For sports and wildlife photographers (and probably people chasing their kids activities), the D500 is a no brainer. If the photographer has investment in DX glass, the D500 is a no brainer. It shouldn't be called a starter camera. That's a D5500. You're going to find many photojounalists with a D500 in the bag. For portrait/landscape work, the D810 is the way to go. For wedding photographers, the D750 is probably the camera of choice with a D500 tagging along. I've only had one shoot on the D500. But yea. Wow. It is all the hype that it's gotten and more.

I am debating which one to choose and so reading your reply was very helpful. But there's one issue which is confusing. It's about using FX glass on a DX body which I assume you do. Are you happy with the results? I can't find a definitive answer. It seems to be Tony Northrup's argument, which is based on objective research vs. the opinions of a number of pro's. Both are pretty compelling for different reasons. Even DPReview used a Tamron 85mm to shoot its sample shots and it looks great on my screen. Would really appreciate the benefit of your experience.

There are two things to consider when using FX glass on DX bodies. 1. In almost every case, lenses have their sweet spot in the middle. Distortion tends to be around the edges. DX bodies use the best part of the lens. Getting wide. My widest lens is a 20mm prime. Then I jump to 24mm. For me that's plenty wide for what I do. But on DX bodies, those become 30mm and 36mm and that's not wide angle enough. Nikon makes plenty of DX lens options that can get you into the 16-18mm range (24-27 effective). But FX glass becomes harder to find and more expensive in a hurry. I've got choices, to stay FX of: 16-35/f4, 17-35/f2.8 or 12-24mm/F2.8 and a couple of prime lens options if I want to stay with Nikkors! Now there is a third factor that has nothing to do with DX vs. FF lenses, but rather using any lens on a DX camera. And that's the DOF problem. If you have a D500 with a 35mm lens and a D750 with a 50mm lens you have roughly the same field of view, so you can shoot at the same distance to subject. A 35mm lens at the same F.stop has more depth of field than a 50mm at the same depth of field. So 35/F2.8 on DX and 50mm/F4 on FX result in a similar image. You could put a 50mm on both, but the DX camera has to back up 1.5x the distance (say the FF camera is at 10 feet, the DX camera needs to be at 15 feet to keep the same field of view). At 10 feet there will be less DOF than at 15 feet, or roughly an f.stop's worth. Generally its a non-issue that's blown up a lot bigger than it is (no pun intended). Only if you're doing really narrow DOF does it become a problem. Trying to shoot headshots at F2.8 doesn't leave much of the face in focus. You might find that the eyes are in focus but the tip of the nose and ears won't be. I generally stop down 2/3 to a stop if I can afford the light just to have enough depth of field for the person I'm photographing to be sharp throughout their body. Headshots need to be in the F8-F11 range anyway. Landscapes you want more DOF not less, so it's not as big a deal.

This is a terrible review. There is no professional cameras, only professional photographers. And you're recommendations for a "starter" camera is ridiculous. You are talking about cameras that cost well over $1k - $2k. No person starting photography needs to spend that type of money. I totally agree! I've owned both DX and FX, the pixel density of a cropped sensor places more pixels on the subject, and also increases the effective focal length of one's lens as it only uses the centre of it, great if one cannot get close enough and has to crop. DX is better in this regard no doubt. But lets say one walked closer with the D750 to the point where the subject was the same size in the frame as it is with the D500, the D750 will have better image quality. If we are talking about overall image quality, then the D750 still wins...

I just walked away from my local camera store with a D750. The arguments in this video are sound, but the bundles on the D750 are quite cheap when you can get the 24-120 f4 Nikkor plus a full frame camera for 2,500. That's what it boils down to for me. Plus, I have a hard time paying more for fps which means little to me and a crop sensor with less MP. I suppose for videographers the D500 is better, but I don't agree the D750 lags in low light performance. It's a stellar camera in my week of owning it. If it suddenly craps out, I will sing a different tune.

Own both and use both extensively. I totally agree with your conclusions. Had none of the recall problems although I did get it serviced. Very fast turnaround times BTW. I would question as to the D500 being a startup or beginners camera. The settings are complicated, although your videos are a great help. The controls on the D500 are MUCH better but somethings might be missing that a beginner expects. The D500 needs a prepared and educated user. The D750 is a little more friendly for a startup. Right now, I'm struggling to decide on a new body. [D500 vs. D750 vs. D810] - For me, I can tell if an image was shot with a full frame sensor versus a crop sensor. The image of a full frame camera has a distinct wideness to it. Full frame looks full while crop sensor images look...well cropped. It's hard to explain. Not to say crop-sensor images look bad at all. I'm just attracted to how full frame images look. That's part of what made me consider a full frame camera. - The D500 is amazing in low light and so is the D750. So they're equal in that respect. - The D500 has a distinct advantage over the D750 in that it doesn't have an AA filter which makes images noticeably sharper, and that's a big deal to lots of photographers out there. (A lot of people don't address the effects of an AA filter.) - With that being said, I'd love to jump into the full frame game but the d500 is outperforming the d750 for me. - The next camera to consider would be the d810. I considered this camera simply because it's the cheapest full frame not to incorporate an AA filter. I thought that perhaps the absence of the AA filter accompanied by the increase in megapixels would make it incredibly sharp. - the images are sharp. Very sharp. With plenty of resolution to give the sharper image. - The low light performance was much better than my d5300 but worse than both the d750 and d500. - Upon testing the autofocus of the d810 I discovered that the autofocus wasn't keeping up with moving subjects. The d500 outperforms the d750 in sharpness and focusing, so now it comes down to the d500 vs. d810. D500: better autofocus, better low light D810: sharper images (no AA and 50% more pixels), fuller (not cropped) look of a full frame image Obviously if money were not a factor I would get both bodies and use them for different things. Money IS a factor though so I can only choose one body. I'm a street photographer who takes pictures at night in fast paced situations, but I also do portraits so I'm torn. I'm stuck at this point. I don't really know what would suit me best. Advice and tips would be appreciated.

I say D500 is a great camera, it's new, all new technology... I never shot D500 to be honest, but to compare it to a full frame camera is a little lame. And 150AF points, yeah, on paper... My take : What's more important is not the camera but the person behind it and his/her skill level. The D750 and D500 are both fatastic cameras . I just wish Nikon could make more pro lenses for DX cameras ! Moreover the 1Nikon 17-55 f2.8 DX is way too old now . For me between the D750 or D500 it's all up to what type of photography you do. I personally value Full frame anytime any day but I do agree that the D500 is very very good ! Any camera be bought by a beginner as long as he/she has the money for it and be " a beginner's camera" ;-) #kidding . My personal recommandation for a beginner or an aspiring pro would be : on the DX side : D7200 or D500 (if you can afford it ) + lenses : Sigma Art 18-35 f1.8 and Sigma Art 50-100 f1.8 (dx lenses). D500 is an excellent choice for video shooters. On the FX side : D610 and invest more in good glass and lighting equipment ; if low light is a priotiy for you then go for the D750. In case you like to make Jumbo size print D810 (if you can afford it) I strongly recommend the D500 as a back up camera (pls keep in mind the crop factor) or for sport ,wildlife and shooters as the camera was specifically tailored for it.

The DX issue is still huge in 2018. All real quality glass is still available for FX, and the quality of DX lenses is not where I would like to call my expenditure as investment. This camera is really for folks who have collected a lot of DX glass, so that they continue to be on Nikon system when upgrading, and not jump over to Canon or Sony because typically their typical lenses are cheaper. If Nikon really thought DX is where digital will gravitate towards (a dilemma they have lived on for 18 years now), we would see pro lenses for DX by now.

Good video in general. I have read and seen reviews online that talk about the D7200 being almost on par with the D500 in regards to ISO sensitivity. DxOMark has the D7200 sports (low-light) score higher than the D500. Go figure. It's safe to say that all 3 cameras (D7200, D750, D500) are a force to be wrecking with.

D750 has had four recalls at this point, doesn't have any better low light performance than the D500, has a sharpening killer AA filter, no touch screen, shoots slower, and not as good autofocus. I shot them side-by-side at a wedding. The D500's low light performance is stellar and other than "High ISO noise" and then they are on par. Now I had a strobe on the D750 and was keeping my ISO down in the 800-1600 range, but I slapped the 70-200/f2.8 vrII on the 500 and let my ISO creep up to 12,800 as the night got darker (outdoor wedding). I wasn't planning on putting the higher ISO images in my deliverables, but they held up well.

There is more to low light performance than High iOS noise. And there is one other factor that very few people take into consideration. The D500 doesn't have an Optical Low Pass filter on it. The D500 images are sharper. When doing noise processing, applying some high ISO noise removal, which blurs the image a little, brings it back in line. Most people are looking purely at the noise pattern and are not factoring noise removal + sharpness for the final results. Trade offs.

In my opinion, it's about the wide-angle lenses. If the lens you'd use the most is an ultra-wide-angle, you're better off with the D750. You can use the Nikon 14-24, or the Tamron 15-30-there's more choice for a high-quality UWA on the FX side. There are decent UWA lenses for DX as well, so if that's not the PRIMARY lens for one, the D500 is probably the better choice all around.

What would you recommend between the D500 vs the D810? Could you do the same type of recommendations between the 2. Which one would you recommend if I'm looking to upgrade to one of them? I shoot my cityscapes in San Diego CA. Also want to get into portraits and maybe weddings. Please help!

Another consideration Polin left out is eye relief for eyeglass wearers. The D500 only has 16mm which may make it difficult to see the entire viewfinder wearing glasses whereas the D750 has a generous 21mm of eye relief.

Where do you get the ISO performance is "better" on the D500? DXO Mark shows a different story, where the ISO performance of the D500 is 1324 versus D750 2956 (higher is better). Also the dynamic range and color depth are higher on the D750? I like your videos but this video does not seem impartial.

It's a very simple choice in my opinion. The D750 is a full-frame camera, it wins any day for shooting things that don't move as the images just get nicer with FX. The D500 is a true sports & action camera and clearly better for that, but I'd take the D750 any day for things that don't move.
