Nikon D780 vs Sony A7S III. Which camera is better in 2021?

Nikon D780 Vs Sony A7S III, which camera is the best? The Sony A7S III is more of a video camera and the Nikon D780 is geared towards photography, but given its enhanced video capabilities the D780 could be considered more of a hybrid camera. Given the specs of each camera, I often reach for my Sony A7S III for my video needs, and the Nikon D780 for my photo needs.

The Nikon D780, or the Sony A7S III, which one do you think is better? Well they both have features that make each stronger for video or photo than the other. The Sony A7S III is a mirrorless camera that was really made for video, and the Nikon D780 is a DSLR that has specs that favour photo; however, Nikon did make the D780 very similar to other mirrorless cameras when the mirror is up with enhanced video capabilities, making the D780 more of a hybrid camera than the A7S III. I like both but from my video, it looks like one may be a clearer winner over all. Which one did you think it was, the A7S III or the D780?

Nikon all day long. Sony is simply washed out. The auto focus on the D780 now makes it possible to actually use Nikon with autofocus to get footage with deep rich color. My favorite lens for music videos is the Tamron 24-70 F2.8 for just about everything. Love Nikon color. Sony is hype point and shoot on steroids'.

Fair enough! Arguably for video the A7s iii has the upper hand with 4 k 60 and 120, as well as 10 bit color and the different kinds of codecs available. The d780 is still a great camera though, personally I don’t see the washed out-ness for Sony but with that extra bit depth you can play around with the colors a lot more to achieve the type of color you’d like to see

@@TymekStolarz True with the A7Sii on the upper hand, but I prefer to get my white balance correct before shooting based on the light. I don't like a flat profile or the other codecs UNLESS you are shooting in RAW - that is when you really have compete control. I look at video with a consumer camera as editing a JPEG - there is really only so much you can do so get it right before you start. For me, I prefer the depth of color for consumer cameras like Nikon or Canon - and I was a Sony video shooter for a long time until the D780. I bought the 780 a couple weeks ago. An upgrade from my d5600 entry level. I’m still getting familiar with the 780, but so far I love it. I’m a new creator. Breaking off my training wheels!..

nice review and comparison! some folks now focusing on mirrorless camera although that non ML camera works perfectly fine until now. a7siii is a beast for video works! and expensive camera lol. that camera is a game changer. and yeahh! a giveaway! you're awesome! count me in Tymek! :D a huge help for me to start my video here in yt. my audio is terrible.

Thank you very much :) it sure is a beast, but its nice to see how well the D780 can still preform, even if its just basic H.264, 4k, 24p. But the flexibility of the A7s III is awesome. Haha as soon as i figure out how to do it properly to not break any KZbin rules. Should be very soon :)

Thank you :) if it’s mostly photography I would say the d780 is probably the better choice. I’d say it’s more photo-orientated and quite a bit cheaper. But if you want to get great video then the a7s iii is way better

I use the h1n and it is a superb entry-level recorder ;) Quick question, does the d780 have an usual Nikon DSLR edge flickering? I mean that You do see pixels clearly on sharp edges, if You shoot on 1080p? I am currently thinking about changing from d600 to d780, and this edge flickering sometimes is a nightmare... This is not a problem with mirrorless cameras, but I wonder whether it was properly solved in 780. Maybe by any chance You've tried making videos with d600 and could compare them both? Unfortunately there is little info on real life tests with d780 and how it performs at video aspect compared to 5d3/4 or the old d600. Oh, and on a side note - appreciate Your channel! Im looking forward to testing it out and giving it away! it looks like a lot of people like it. Do you by chance have a video or article that you could link so i could check out regarding the edge flickering? i've had absolutely no issues with any kind of flicking on the edge of my frames with the D780. Here is a link to all the shots i took with the D780 in this video ( 0:32 , 0:54 , 8:57 ) and also almost all the talking head portions of my videos on this channel are shot with the D780. (the first 9 videos on this channel are all with the D780, unless i am talking about the d780 - like in this video, then i am using a crappy Canon), but even a lot of the videos after are using the D780. i've only been using the A7S III for some b-roll, but i only have a 24 and 50mm lens for Sony, and i like to use my 90mm which i only have with the D780, so there should be quite a bit of footage for you to look through. If you comment on any of those videos and ask which camera i used i'll happily answer. The only thing i can think of that could be causing flickering is shooting video under regular house lights that aren't LEDs. (I've actually shot some tests and am planning to make a video about this).

So it is done, D780 ordered ;) By the flickering on the edges I mean something that happened here on the edge of LED strip in the rear lights: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGXFqHaVidyBftU Like there was not enough pixels to properly deal with sharp edges in the frame. Sometimes in some videos it was a real "pain in the ass" to see, in this video it was just couple of files. But good to hear that all shenanigans will be gone with d780 ;) Cheers mate!

Not a problem :) I think you'll really enjoy it, its a great all round photo and video camera. So just to confirm we are talking about the same thing, in the video, do you mean the flickering lights of the car at 0 :57 and 1 :42? If so then i think its the same thing with house lights, the light source isn't putting out a constant beam of light, turning off and on very quickly. Every camera set to the same frame rate will have this appear in the video. when i was shooting the 240 fps clip of the water falling out of the jug in this video with my A7SIII, i had to turn off my kitchen light and only leave my Falcon Eyes SO-28TD LED light because it looked like i had a strobe disco light in my kitchen haha.

@@TymekStolarz no no, the flickering of lights is other thing, I mean only the flickering-pixel effect on sharp edges ;) the problem with lights is another, but its not a big deal - 1/50s or 1/100s is sufficent for new age LED headlights.

May need to pick up One of the Sony’s eventually. For now I’m sticking with iPhone because it’s so easy to record and especially transferring files with AirDrop. If they come out with a camera with AirDrop or if it has something similar, I will be more likely to make the change

They have great cameras and there is a lot of selection to choose from, but it is a huge investment. I don’t think they will ever be able to match the ease of use of an iPhone, but I think that’s what people want, more freedom and control - which comes at the expense of being a lot more complicated. Air drop is so nice forsure but I don’t ever see it being in a camera because Apple doesn’t want people to stop buying all the new iPhones every year they come out, but the quality does keep getting better. They probably won’t be matching proper cameras with quality glass any time soon though.

@@TymekStolarz Well come to think of it some control would be good but also you can download iPhone apps to get a lot of control. Hmmm can’t you just transfer via Bluetooth or WiFi still almost just as easily? Or SD card is prob real quick these days just put in a usb c cord into the camera or something?

That’s true I’ve seen those. Yup you can transfer over wifi for a lot of cameras but it’s very slow in comparison to transferring it directly to the computer. You can plug in your camera or you can take out the memory card and use a card reader - I prefer to do it the last way. I’ve read this is the best way for some reason.

Hey :) I remember we were talking about mouth noise and I just thought I would share this: I ended up buying the upgraded version of that program that serge was talking about in his video that removes mouth noise. But he was using just the “click removal “. I tested out the mouth de-click and the breath control in the 30 day trial they offer and I am completely blown away with how great they work. The mouth de click works about 95% of the time without any reduction in over audio quality, and I can just reduce the volume of my breath without removing it completely. Unfortunately the program is expensive but i think it’s totally worth it for how good the program is. It’s also 100 dollars off right now. Just thought I would share.

@@TymekStolarz Thanks yeah I think it’s too expensive and it’s crappy that they bundle it in with other products you don’t need in order to try and justify the outrageous price. It’s great what it does, but not worth it to me. The mouth noise hasn’t been an issue for me now that I don’t record each line separately. I just kind of record in segments so it’s more live and natural.

i think Sony in general has the upper hand in low light. but overall the A7S III is the better video camera by far, and then it also has that second Base ISO that cleans it up at higher values. So i think overall the A7S III would be the better pick.

Hmm. That’s a tough one- you would definitely need a f1.4 lens, and could only Shoot 24 fps, and the moon MIGHT provide just enough light, but you’d still have to bump up the ISO pretty high. And probably still need to use some denoise like neat video. I don’t have a f1.4 lens for my Nikon, but when I shot the northern lights a month or so ago on my Sony, there wasn’t any moon so that may have been one of the problems but I had to bump up my iso even farther then what was clean on the Sony.
