Nikon has really turned it around, firmware 3.0 on the z6/7 is a huge improvement, the z50 was a great release, and now the d780 seems like best all around DSLR ever released.

I always find it amusing that when the D750 came out it had bigger hype than the a7iii. It was the be all end all of cameras. It was the lowest light “monster.” People were damn near selling their first born in order to get one. It was hysteria trying to find one and buy it. Today, it’s considered “old.” Yet image and performance wise it beats some of the current cameras. But the argument is video usage. Well, these are photo cameras not camcorders. I hate that video usage is how all cameras are rated now. The D780 is not much of an upgrade over the D750 but people act like the cameras forget how to work when a new model comes out. I have DSLR and Mirrorless and here is my finding. DSLR has a more life like (3D) feel to images where Mirrorless for some reason produces “flat” images. I like both systems for different reasons. D750 is still my favorite camera ever.

GRJCLyon That explains why your full frame has more lifelike look and the mirror less is flat. Full frame vs crop. I’ve had Canon 6D, 5DIII, Eos R, D800, D750, A7R2, Fuji, XT3, along with other crop bodies. Now I have an A7III. Only time I get a life like 3D is full frame with a great lens. Either brand will be similar. It’s the lenses that really matter too, especially on a full frame. I like the Nikon colors, but hated the skin tone colors. A full crowd of people’s skin all looked the same. Not much in skin tone separation. Excellent cameras though. Crop bodies just don’t have that look. I’m waiting for the R5 to come out and buying that, now that the RF lenses are rolling out.

I just bought the D780. Yes, it's 2024. A 4-year-old DSLR in 2024. Why? 1) Battery life in photo mode thanks to the OVF. Let's be frank here - it's unbeatable. 2) Great video quality. 3) No need for me to sell my entire fleet of great F-mount glass I acquired over the past years. 4) I use a follow focus for videos anyway, so the lack of stepper motor lenses doesn't seem to be bothering me. 5) For stills, the AF is quick as, well.., AF. 6) Great image quality from the now BSI sensor. 6) 1/8000S top shutter speed compared to its predecessor, the D750 (1/4000). I agree that the D780 is the most compelling and complete DSLR by Nikon, and also that Nikon closed its DSLR production beautifully with the release of this camera. Amazing ergonomics, intuitive and clean menu system, great design, quality all around. I'm super happy to have it.

With its fast, dedicated Hybrid-AF system, it is Nikon's first SLR camera to be fully used for video production, whether Full HD or 4K. I love this camera. The Nikon D780 cannot be compared to the Nikon D750.

This shows just how CLOSE the images coming out of different brands are; it's hard to see a significant difference even side by side. I guarantee if you just took 3 images randomly NOBODY could tell you which camera took which image. I used to own the 5D Mark IV and now have the EOS-R. The EOS-R has much better auto focus (way more tack sharp images, rarely misses), better video, newer tech. However, for stills I found the 5D had slightly better dynamic range, lower noise and no banding (I do get banding in EOS-R images if pushed). I really like these comparison videos by TLS because they are presented fairly, concisely, and I find them entertaining. Keep up the great work.

Nike review. I've had the D780 for close to two years, and it is an amazing camera. Just as a note, native ISO on the D780 is up to 51,200.

Great comparisons! really helpful, I still choose sony, has all the right tools, almost. for me Sony a7iii still has 1up against canon mark4 and the new d780, I agree with the Nikon Colors out of the camera its nice but you can adjust easily the sony to match. just my 2 cents, Peace!

Alright, the D780 looks like the winner. The most important categories for me are the ISO performance and dynamic range. The sharpness is just a matter of lens choices.

Thanks for this video. I was thinking of selling my F mount gear and jumping over to the A7III... but it looks like I might be better off changing my D800 to a D780? I don't mind the resolution drop from 36MP to 24MP, just being able to use my screw af lenses, nikon body and interface, and on phase sensor detect!

Just a question that I would like to point out, the comparison on Minus 2 EV at approximately 4.01, the sun is hitting below the doors at the back for Nikon which means the reflection would probably be different than the Canon and Sony? Sorry, I am just wondering cos I never thought my Nikon is better than Canon and Sony....

Nice review again. If you look at the comparison shot around 2:00, it seems the Sony is perfectly focused at the pupil of the eye (albeit I am in doubt it may have focused slightly closer by). The Canon seems to have focused farther away than the pupil. The Nikon still has the pupil in focus but that is at the edge of where depth of field (DoF) ends towards the camera. As two of these are DSLR and hence the AF sensor is another thing than the imaging sensor, the question pops up if the Nikon and Canon had been calibrated before you used them. They likely came from a rental company and may do a superficial inspection of these cameras with a couple clicks but that may not be enough. In the old school, DoF was supposed to be 1/3rd towards the camera and 2/3rd farther away from camera, behind the focused-on plane - it looks like neither has its AF set to that standard. The Sony seems more like 2/3rd to the front and 1/3rd to the back (hence the very sharp depiction of the skin in the face.

Thanks at last a review that test the real important component of the Camera. Specs mean zero unless you create output. This allows the owner of the system to understand the strength of the sensors and adjust shooting process to extract these benefits. Do not grab this concept that camera A is blowing camera B out of the water based on the reviewers pet specs. Thanks and great value reviews

All 3 are perfectly capable of being used as pro tools. Having said that, the problem with D780 in particular is inability to use the new lenses. These Z-mount lenses, which I owned 3 of so far, are better than pretty much anything in F-mount. When you have in mind that bodies come and go, but lenses you use longer, especially if you start building a system from scratch, D780 is at big disadvantage. Guess it's valid for 5DIV and RF lenses too, but I haven't use those and cannot say for sure. So, basically, if these 3 cameras are the ones you are choosing from, and you are building a new system, go Sony. In the last 2 or 3 years for this mount A TON of great lenses were released. All kind of prices, all kind of specs.

These 2 cameras are head to head in specs. If you already have glass then go with what you have. If you don't have glass then Canon lenses are more of a standard in the video industry and will cross over to other cameras.

If they did the shots with F1.4 lenses of the same range, the test would be more equitable, the lens has a lot to do.

Sharpening is easily added in post (or in settings). Don't mistake in camera sharpness for detail. Another big name KZbinr made this mistake with the 5D MarkIV.

abnorm77 that’s literally what every Canon owner always says. They make an excuse to try and hide the fact that the 5D MkIV was a dud, and then always make a point about how they love Canon colors. Almost like Canon sends out a memo to all their fanboys about what to say after see how they fare unfavorably to others.

@@77dris You cannot add sharpness to a blurred eye in post production, it will only add additional distortion to an already blurred area. Canon DSLRs lack the ability to focus on eyes, and it is not even about the lens. The likelyhood of focusing on the eye and not eye lashes is very low on Canon.

I think the problem that Nikon has it doesn't lead the field as far as specifications goes, but they produce very good cameras and lenses that are efficient to use that is difficult to highlight in metrics. All the current camera manufacturers are producing more than adequate products, but the trend is to highlight a few key features - at present AF, it used to be high ISO, maybe it'll be dynamic range in the future. What ever you buy now it's guaranteed to be out of date soon. This is why I've wanted to upgrade my 5 year old D750 for at least 3 years now - I think I'll just have to wait even longet before I make a decision to buy a new camera. :-)

Considering the DSLR days being numbered, i really hoped the autofocus points (OVF) of Nikon D780 is more spread like D850 but Nikon went in a different direction.

nikon D780 seems to have less correct in focus. its not sure if they have used the eye focus live button or not. sony seems to have perfect focus. canon on the other hand seems to be just the right amount in every direction. i was thinking of getting D780 but from what I see it seems that I would need to have a live testing for the camera first.

Sony dynamic range is way above Canon and Nikon. The white balance is not good as Nikon and Canon and Nikon keep the uperhand in that regard. Sony eye af is killing it. Also Nikon image is a lot more blurry than the Canon or sony, is the lens?

Definitely prefer Canon color, tone, and bokeh of Canon glass. The other factors are minor and less significant.

Yes Sony does give natural colors. People who say I like canon colors should buy an iPhone because it give even better colors. Pro cameras should give natural color and allow the pro to play with raw in editing.

I wanted the z6ll, but wasn't in the budget. I got the D780. I shoot hockey so it is working good. Maybe in 3-4 years, I'll go Mirrorless and the kids move out 😂😂😂😂😂😂

The Nikon was way worse multiple times. And why did they say the Sony didn’t go past 12,800, it goes to 51,200 and I’m sure the Nikon does too. This seems biased.

Rubbish! @06:35 Wrong! Canon 5DIV does indeed have DPAF! The 5D has very good focusing capabilities, and borrows from the 1DX series. If you were using the 50 mm f1.2 Lens, there is a lot of glass, and moving that glass can be slow. Couple that with a fast aperture and focus errors can happen! Seems to be a fair amount of misinformation and lack of knowledge here? Yes, I own the 5D Mark V, as well as Nikon bodies. Don’t own Sony and don’t care to. Comparison of dynamic range was impressive for the D780, however it is hard to discern on my IPad screen. Seems the Canon did better than what you reported.

@@TheSlantedLens what about the z6 II in comparison with the Sony a7iii, is it a better deal? I was a Nikon guy but a year ago I switch to Sony because my d750 hade all the focus points stacked in the middle of the frame and I hate recompousing the shoot. After a year of Sony I miss my Nikon files, colors etc... My question is : is the Nikon z6ii a better deal then the Sony a7iii? Has Nikon a future in the mirrorless system?

Sony terrible, canon old sensor kind of showing its age but still pretty damn good. Nikon d780 seems good, except the price, if it was 1800/1700usd body wouldve been huge hit.

@@TheSlantedLens Settled for Eos R which costs about 1300-400usd usd this days. Was big nikon shooter had most of their cameras but mainly was using d750 d800 d810 d850, moved to Sony for a season r3 but hate it and actually got stolen in san francisco along my gm lenses laptop drone etc(about 15-17k usd in gear). Didnt had much money to get new gear for my work so opted for cheap-ish fuji xt2s. Too much noise at 3200 and especially at 6400 and i regular shoot at 3200 and from time to time 6400. Combined with the very slow focusing especially in dark places by the 56 1.2 and shit tracking i had to move on. Canon is where i ended up and im quite happy, wish they bring RF24 and RF135 possibly 1.4 to pair with my rf50 which is the best lens i used. That said i just cant see why anyone would pay over 2k for d780 when he can get eos R for 1400. I guess brand loyal people will do but i dont know, its good body, very good, but very overpriced. Especially knowing the d780 in a year will be at least half off in the used marked, probably earlier, as soon as the new mirrorless bodies hit the market.

The Slanted Lens .... by that logic a $120,000 BMW is an ‘entry’ level vehicle. Some people do need to repeat high school. Tell Nikon their 7000 series camera series were ever ‘entry’ level anything, and see what they say. There are plenty of camera reviewers on youtube to skip your stupidity.
