Tony & Chelsea Northrup I just took a picture the other day of one of those spiders from early in this video. Due to my budget, I use only a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, therefore, not nearly as impressive as this d850. I watched your review of the nikon d5600 and I'm aching to get the all in one bundle off of walmart.com.

Probably because you don't have the lenses and the will to do that, this summer i rented a 200-500 5.6 for one week and i got amazing shoots with my 5500, pretty sure you can do the same with the 5300. ;)

I have the Tamron 150-600 5-6.3, so I do have the glass ;-) And I'm getting great results, this is just wishful thinking. I'm mostly annoyed with lacking frame rate and especially RAW buffer, and the AF system could of course always be better.

First time I've heard the point that in DX mode the focus points cover the whole range. I think that's an important point as you can switch to DX and have complete range for action shots. Viewfinder image in DX was helpful too. Good point about seeing what is coming in to frame. Helpful; thank you. :-)

APSC are great for open land wildlife, however, for forest birds and animals, full frame sensor has advantage with better low light, 50% of bird shots are in shades..
@JM-nz8gw

Very true what you said, however, the more light advantage is better when you fill the frame. If you shoot DX, you should get the same ISO/low light performance as a D500.

a really nice channel you have. I am just a 17 year old boy, but I really like your videos. I am saving money for a new camera now because my d200 has lots of dead pixels now and already 150.000 shots on it. My dream is to have a better camera one day, but to this day I have to save money. With only 42€/Month that will be a struggle, but I will make this somehow.

I do like the idea of getting rid of my D750 and D500 to work with one body. I found myself using the D500 for most things but couldnt bring myself to get rid of the full frame. Its just nice to have a full frame for low light/indoor stuff and portrait shooting.

Why nobody(except for Sony Artisans) is talking about Sony a9?, it is a camera that is just like 2 months older than Nikon D850. Do you think the a9 is in the same league of 1DM-II, or D5?

It's a mistake to think that 20 percent more megapixels equals 20 percent more of focal length. When your focal length gets X times as long, your subject area will be X to the power of two times as big. Thanks for your useful videos.

Coming from a D800, the only thing I lament over so far is the material of the grip. The D800 had a softer, more rubbery grip, while the D850 feels less... grippy. On the other hand, the grip overall is still better on the D850, thanks to being significantly deeper. The battery grip isn't as deep as on the body itself though, but still just a tiiiiiny bit deeper than it was on the D800, though again, with a different material, where the D800 grip felt better. The dial to screw it to the body also feels rather cheep for the D850 - very plasticy and much smaller. (The D800 grip and body were both made in Japan, the D850 body was made in Thailand - just like D7100, btw - while the battery grip for D850 is made in China.)

Ton & Chel, where are you shooting this? My wife and I are looking for good places in CT and at the shore. I like that you have a blind there, assuming the subjects are in 'range', not requiring too much cropping. She has a 500 with 500mm and I have a 750 with a 600mm.

Tony that lens mount seems pretty sturdy, I see you are holding it with one hand on the camera with the lens dangling. I heard the lens mount and body and shutter are reinforced, is that your findings. Both of you are making this camera harder to resist purchasing, great work as always.

If you still recommend the D500, how about the D7500? It shoots a little slower and doesn't have the D5 AF, but still, it seems like a good deal for the price. It's smaller, lighter and has the handy U1/U2 settings. Still uses the D500 sensor, so IQ should be the same.

I find the under-discussed issue of "cropability" very interesting when it comes to evaluating bodies and lenses. I don't have an unlimited budget and shoot with a Canon 6D. I own the 135mm F2 and shoot almost exclusively for the Web. I find that the photos I take with the 135 and FF body are amazingly croppable - they look gorgeous even when cropped drastically; somewhat more so when shot in daylight than under tungsten or fluorescent lighting. The 135 gives me a sneaky feeling, like I'm getting away with something by shooting stage events at F2 and 1/800 and having the photos look wonderful. Yeah, who needs a long 2.8 stabilized zoom? I wonder if croppability would be an interesting subject for a future video.

P.S. Tony, have you tried using Camera Raw for shadow recovery? Much better than Lightroom. The Camera Raw filter is very useful when I'm working on Tiffs or jpegs and need to tweak shadows.

It's almost as if this video was specially made for me, except I don't really shoot wildlife, not that I don't want to, but the nearest wildlife to me is an awful public transport ride away, and I so want to write a huge rant about that, but that's not gonna add to anything :-),.... maybe I should get a car instead of the D850. Will have to wait for your landscape and travel reviews, but there's no rush. Thanks for a great earlyish review, keep up the good work!

Questions for either of you! "Quick Disclaimer a lot of questions and ideas but hope you can read and help me! Huge fan! " So a quick question.... what are the best uses for the Nikon D850? I'm a drone pilot I use a DJI Inspire pro. and I know new ones out... but quickly on that topic my next upgrade will be to the DJI M200 or M600 or is it 800 with the 6 rotor 6 batteries system? Anyways back to the camera question... so the uses of this D850? And further more the best lenses for each category " what this camera is best suited or best at". And within again that what lenses would you use to not only suit the job but that would optimize the cameras MP's to so to speak get the best use out of the frames? And this camera doesn't have the stabilizer built in so if shooting on the move or so on without it having the stabilizer it would be shooting or be best to shoot at a lower MP ? Or? And same topic would you say stabilized lenses "optic" would fix this or maybe just help it a little? And for video would you pick this over a GH5? How would this compare to a GH5 and how would it compare to a Sony Alpha A9 in terms of shutter speed and in terms of buffer and so on? I'm looking for a camera possibly to use on the go shoots " weddings , general photography-video as well, portraits, landscape/cars other stills, and last and I probably know the response to this question but can or is it possibly to put this on a drone like the DJI M600 ? Or would a GH5 be better? Along with stabilizer units out like - MOvI made by free-fly Link-store.freeflysystems.com/collections/movi-pro And one last question..... what would you recommend is the best drone and best camera out or coming out ? Along with what are your thoughts on what's next where things are heading with the DSLR/mirror-less market? And with that I'll end the long list of questions.... for now.... In advance thank you for reading this! And thank you for producing the most informative and detail oriented and vast not only knowledge but experience advice and reviews you provide us! I love learning from you and always feel like it's a one stop shop I don't need to do more research through forums and other vids I feel like you always hit the nail on the coffin and again your the best! And maybe a video in regards to price ranges for jobs and so on. From low to high and average for photography and videoagraphy/Drones "footage/stills/video/drone". And start up ranges per job class and what gear per job class you would need ranging from average JOE to medium level to PRO. And maybe go in to what makes someone a true Professional in photography and what gear they should or might have? As you are a Professional sure this one would be detailed but none the less a easy question for u! Gear from computers to cameras to stand and so on..... again sorry for long post prob guessing you might not have the time to , or care to?/ time to read my ramble/ questionnaire... and if possible if I could pick ur brain through email or phone? Emails- Ardenritzel@gmail.com hope to see vids or here from you! My wife is big in to portraits and loves ur videos as well! And as you can relate to... before I buy anything I research for days before being able to decide and I thrive on achieving the best and have a never ending drive to "Do better/ always learning and progressing in my passion/career/life. Again hope to see vids of maybe some of my questions or if I hear from you through email I provided above. Would make my year to be able to talk and learn from you!

My D750 takes exceptional pictures but the buffer fills fast. Its early but I've noticed that the detail in the D500 doesn't match the D750 full frame. To get it all do I need to jump to the D5?

I'm satisfied with my 10mp 1d III. Just saying it still gets me magazine publications lol. But as I diversify into pet photography wanting to open up a studio has left me looking for something that offers higher resolution as you can only print so big on 10mp. Ill probably end up picking up a used D810 but the thought still lingers on a d850.

I have to say I own a D850, and a D500 but think the D500 is better because the focus points go all the way to the edge of the frame. The D500 is also faster especially out of the box, but the D850 gets close with the vertical grip and Nikon D5 battery En-El18C. The D500 with EN-EL18C is super fast like the D5, but it's actually the battery and 9fps that make the D850 faster because with 9FPS your getting 30% less black-out time which makes focus faster!

nice comparison, but seeing as you are saying about the "viewfinder" experience in video, how about a compare with the fujifilm G X 50 s (a medium format camera- ~50 MP camera with the advantage of video and a mirror less cameras full time live view composition feature ). in light of the comparisons you made re the wildlife scenario this seems a good contender to match with.

My question is as follows; For bird photographers (like me) who want birds in flight, its tough to do it on tripods, so handheld gives us best results. With the D850 what handheld Nikon lens can you use to give you a go reach for small birds? I currently use the Olympus OMD EM 1 Mk II with the 300mm and a 1.5 teleconverter which essentially gives me 840mm handheld all day with 20mgp RAW images. For a similar reach of at least 600mm, what lens will give me equivalent picture quality with the D850 for small birds?

Thank you for the video. Why was there so much static from the sound? Do you not invest in good mic or was it just the location?

I would absolutely love to have the D850, it would be a huge update from the D5200. But unfortunately my budget is rather limited and that likely breaks the deal entirely. Any recommended options I could go for instead? Lenses owned atm: - Sigma 50mm 1:1.4 DG HSM - Sigma 17-70mm 1:2.8-4 DC - Tamron AF 70-300mm LD Di

Tony There is no way that having 25% more pixels will get you 20% more detail. Taking the square root you'll only get 12.2% more pixels linearly. Therefore assuming an optically perfect lens that is perfectly focused on a perfectly flat perfectly parallel object with the camera held perfectly steady you'd still only get12.2% more detail. Real world it will always be somewhat less.

I always find it hard to maintain a level shot when filming hand held video in live view. An EVF would be better for videography.

Thank you guys...I really like your videos. I´d like you do a comparison between the Sony A9 and this Nikon D850. I know that it´s not that easy but if you can do it would be great. I´d like to switch from Nikon to Sony and i´d buy the A9 because i think it has more video features than the Nikon D850 (I do both video and photography) but i want to be sure because that change represent me changing all my lenses. Congratulations for your work. Greetings from and Argentinian guy in Barcelona!!

Tony, I have an upcoming trip to Eygpt. Wat travel lens would you recommend? I have about $3000 available to purchase the lens. I was thinking Tamron 24-70 f2.8 g2, Nikon 35 f1.8 and a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2 SP?? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Great stuff. Question. What zooms were you using on the D850 and do you think that the camera will be just too good for those "cheaper" zooms like the Tamron 150-600 ? Also, I'd love to see the focus peaking in action. Thanks.
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 7 жыл бұрын
It's the sdp.io/n200500, which is a pretty cheap zoom. we need to get better glass for the D850. But most people are using the cheaper zooms with APS-C bodies, so you'd have similar sharpness 1:1, and better sharpness when you can fill the frame.

What is the buffer size for the D500? I didn't see that mentioned in the video and I seem to remember it was something very large. Also, do you have a larger buffer size when shooting the D850 in 20MP mode?

You mentioned, what I was gonna ask/say, is how if you are always cropping, the FF image here will be the same basically as a crop sensor. But, wouldn't a crop sensor always get a closer/more detailed image? Or at least matched? You'd always have to crop to match the APSC FOV. If you are limited by the lens min. focusing distance, I'd think the Crop sensor will get same/more detail than high MP FF? Well, depending on the FF MP/AA Filter/etc. Seems like main benefit of FF for wildlife, is wider FOV, and if not cropping, then the image should be cleaner/better, I guess?
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 7 жыл бұрын
+mLichy911 generally, yes (see sdp.io/density) but in this case the density is exactly the same, so cropping the FF gives you equivalent results.

HI TONY AND CHELSEA! I started shooting wildlife three years ago, for which I bought a Canon 70D and the 400mm f5.6L, thanks to your reviews back in the day ;) For my first camera-lens setup, I couldn't be more satisfied. However, I've been itching to upgrade from the 70D for almost a year now (the dawn/dusk low-light performance kills me). I've been holding out in hopes that the 7DIII might bring Canon bodies back into the competition (30 megapixel crop sensor for that reeeeach? 4k video? sensor stabilization?), and would allow me to work with the 400mm f5.6L for a while longer until I can drop the big bills on some top-tier super telephoto glass. I also have the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 art, which would be nice to keep. BUT, that D850 though! Do I keep faith in Canon? Or do I drop 'em like Nikon just did the mic!? Thanks Chelsea and Tony!

Cam Hurd 30mp crop sensor would be too high a pixel density for the 400 f5.6. You might get some improvement but not much.

I have a question about super telephotos with the D850. Which would you say is a better lens for the D850, the Nikkor 200-500 f/5.6, the Tamron 150-600 G2 or the Sigma 150-600 sport? I will be using it primarily for wildlife photography. Thanks Jeff

Hasn't Nikon basically killed off their flagship D5's sales with the D850? You pay $2500 more for 3 more fps, but only 20MP and therefore less cropping lattitude, less base DR, less video capabilities etc. I would think this would cripple the D5's sales.

Binnu Babu Nikon is dying, so they have to pull out all the stops to survive, D850 is make or break for them, the D5 doesn't sell in the numbers that the D850 will to earn them profits.

I think you forgot to include the cost of the battery charger in the 9fps costs, also just 40 lossless compressed raws at 7fps? That is very disappointing, I thought Nikon said 50... :(
