Never been interested in Bird’s photography, but 2 weeks ago I´ve got my 200 500 to learn how to do it...Well, I must say it´s so freaking hard, sometimes I feel so frustrated and disappointing with myself. My technique sucks, hold my D850 with this monster of lens is so hard for me. Maybe because my back is injured, but I don´t quit, not at all, I will be trying repeatedly until I get some decent result. I´m watching all your videos Mark, because in my opinion you are one of the greatest birds’ photographers I´ve ever seen. You get FANTASTICS photos with any camera, you are not a gear whore, and you just want to enjoy and make your audience enjoy your content, and why not, sell your books (I hope to buy some of them asap). Thanks, my friend for help me not quit and keep trying. I´ll publish your channel link in my small YT channel because people needs to know a real photographer like you. Hope someday shoot a bird with the plasticity and skill you do. Cheers Eduardo Regueiro An old but happy photographer

These are gorgeous shots of beautiful birds. Of course, the American Bald Eagle also nests in Colorado near the Platt river & other waters. The Sandhill Crane can be seen & heard migrating across Colorado's eastern plains in early fall & many other of the birds seen in Florida also migrate through Colorado each year where they can be photographed, as well. Though certainly not the variety Ur seeing in Florida. What beautiful birds & pictures Ur getting of them. Excellent mastery of Ur equipment.

Great stuff. Favorite is the eagle at 9:49. That is one wicked bird. The density and diversity of birds in Florida seems much higher than in the SF Bay Area. In about 1 year, I only have photos of about 70 different species of birds. Of course, I am not out every day with my camera and Nikon 200-500 mm lens.

The eagle shots were magnificent but out here in BC, Canada we see a lot of them. I fly paragliders and they often join us in thermals. What thrills me more than anything else is to turn in a thermal joined with an eagle or two, or ravens or buzzards or hawks. We get 'em all. My favourite in this video had to be the tri-colored heron. Fantastic shots!! I loved the snail kites as well, and the sandhill cranes dancing at the end were just hilarious. Great video!

Love your videos as much as your stills! Couple questions... you have a buddy that shoots the video or you setting up a tripod for when your speaking? For the video of the birds/wildlife, are you handholding for a lot of your video or using some kind of fluid head/tripod set up. I know you said you're using the D500 but it would be cool to see a pic of your video set up. Great work! Big fan!

Yesss thank you, years ago I lived in Florida and even though I used to love taking pictures I did not have the experience nor capable equipment I have now. Last fall I went on a 2 week trip and I was so overwhelmed with the diversity of birds I encountered in just a park in the middle of Hialeah City. There was a variety of warblers that for me to find them in Puerto Rico I have to drive acrossed the island in hope that I can find it.

I finally saved enough to go on an African safari. I know it will probably be my onetime only chance to get sharp animal photos. So I purchased the D850 but don’t know which lens to take. I would take my Nikon 500 F4 as a first choice. If it was too heavy then I would go with my Nikkor 200-500 but I would do everything I could to get my 500 F4 there. Good luck on your trip!
@Harvmorbi6 жыл бұрын
Mark, Thanks replying so fast. Just did some research on the 500 f.4. I can see why you recommended it. It is a great, sharp lens. But the cost is out of my reach. Do you remember which bird photos you shot with the 200-500 so I can look again. All your photos were super sharp and some were super tack sharp. Hope I'm not being a pain but probably am. Thanks again.

Another truly STUNNING video! You transported me to Florida. Exquisite detail and color on so many pictures and video. I love the minute clarity of the bird at 5:58, where you can see every atom of the feathers and even the poor mosquito who gave his all to make that a memorable photo. I wonder how many of the shots use a tripod and how many are hand-held, as you seem to be able to get a perfect focus each time. Learning about birds stealing from each other, too, ha, ha! Little rascals!

Hi Mark, really nice work on this one and thanks for what you share and the way you share it. I have just recently acquired my D850 and I have a couple of questions. 1. The specs on the birds in flight photos included a 500mm focal length. Was that a prime 500mm lens? 2. Really nice how you switched from video footage to still image....are you simply flipping the switch between video and still when you do those transitions?

I have the 200-500 with my D850, but so far, I don't seem to be getting the crisp shots you manage. I have watched your videos and changed a lot of settings for back focus etc. Also, living in the UK, I don't have the stunning birds you have in the States.
@MarkSmithphotography6 жыл бұрын
I know the 200-500 needs really good light. Have you tried to fine tune the lens to see if it is front or back focusing?
@jcmilleker54496 жыл бұрын
AF Fine Tune seems to be a big must for length. My 70-200 is a good -5. Just switched over to Nikon (Been Canon since film) so half my first birding trip in a year or two was terrible missed focus before I started just changing the tuning and comparing the shots on the screen. Still not really impressed, but know I need to work more on it.
@tonybates93656 жыл бұрын
Good light isn't common in the UK, but I've just looked it up and will try a fine tune. Thanks.

When shooting handheld with the 200-500, what VR mode do you have then lens in? Normal or Sport?
@jcmilleker54496 жыл бұрын
From watching several reviews on this lens, normal for normal shooting and sport for panning horizontally. YMMV, I haven't tried it myself (Lenses come tomorrow) and others have reported not much difference in the two modes. Interested in what Mark thinks.

Thanks Mark! The Eagles and Snail Kites were fantastic but you really caught my attention with Swallow Tailed Kite and the Warblers. I saw a Swallow Tailed Kite for the first time last week as it circled low over my yard in South Florida. Fantastic! What you didn't mention was that these guys have a huge wing span, up to three feet; impressive! Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. I have, however, been shooting warblers in my back yard. The spring migration is fantastic. Two weeks ago I had probably half a dozen species in my yard at one time. They are small and quick and I didn't have any luck shooting them in flight. So thanks for the tips.

Always love your videos Mark. I recently became the proud owner of a Canon 500mm f4 lens. Still getting used to shooting with it but was curious to know if you always use single point AF, or do you also use multi point AF, especially for BIFs? Thanks
@MarkSmithphotography6 жыл бұрын
I use something called d25 or d9 for birds in flight. They are both small dynamic points. I only ever use single point for perched birds.

I have been addicted to photographing birds. The 200-500mm is so much fun. I can’t get enough and fortunately I live in a perfect area of Montana. I find it consuming most my days now.

Mark, as always great images and video. Would you tell us how you are taking the video. Is it with the D850 or obviously many times you have a second camera. Thanks for the info. Rwp
@MarkSmithphotography6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I use the D850 to capture video footage. It is pretty easy to just switch back and forth while shooting.

Hey Mark great video. Love your work. Quick question. Is 600 enough on full frame for these type of photos ? Budget around 2k ?

Outstanding video once again. I live in Pennsylvania and frequent a place called peace valley nature center. Some many of these birds have been found up here except for the kites. We even have a family of Sandhills up here. I'd love for you to visit. I'll probably be down in Florida late summer. This is my Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/120449047@N06/

Great video! I guess I really liked the Jays at the beginning, mostly because of their behavior. But they were all outstanding to see!!

Amazing shots and video! We always watch and cast your video in the living room on a big screen. A laptop and mobile is not worthy of this quality video :) Great Job!!
