I will defend this camera every day of the week. It is a bit of a clunky little beast, and not the digital F3 I was hoping for, but dang that sensor is incredible. It creates sublime images from decades-old prime glass. The 85 1.8 sings on this thing. If you have a bunch of AI and AF Nikkor primes in your closet, picking up a used Df for a grand will save you a boatload in new lenses.

Couldn't disagree more than with Kai's opinion of the Df. Given it must still function fluidly within Nikon's current DSLR system, handling well with primes as well as f/2.8 zooms, Nikon has actually done a fine job using a retro concept as basis for THE smallest, lightest DSLR EVER. From any manufacturer. I had my doubts as well, but after owning and using one for the last couple weeks, I think Nikon has gotten most of the fundamentals just right.

SLO722 I believe that it is. I’m old and old school so it’s similarity to old 35mm cameras helped me gain confidence in re-entering photography in a digital world. The lenses are Nikon so they are good. Beyond that the results are more dependent on the photographer - like my father told me the quality of the job is due to the mechanic, not the wrench.

I actually only bought the camera because I wanted a digital DSLR body which can handle natively none Ai manual Nikkor lenses. But, oh baby, this thing is fantastic, ISO performance, autofocus, menus, dials, size and weight etc. Only thing which sucked at first was that you need to get an extra external WiFi adapter, but once bought and sat up in about 10 seconds the connection is as stable and repeatable as with my Panasonics, better than Canon. Really very lovely camera.

ISO 65,535? Really? 2^16-1. I guess the Nikon Df really is digital fusion. Kai nails the problem with retro-look cameras: "They're trying to make it look like the old one, but modern." I'm totally not a fan of retro cameras. I think newer SLRs have made big improvements in ergonomics since 1990.

I bought one, 43 years after I bought my first Nikon, an F Photomic FTn. I can now use my pre-Ai 35mm f1.4 on a digital back. And now I have full-frame, which may confer benefits of its own. I would probably never have stretched for the same-price D800, but this has something more. The video is good fun, speaks a certain sort of language, makes some valid points. But I have black Df, and I'm still happy.

For someone who likes leicas, I'm surprised Kai doesn't like the DF as it has dials for all the settings instead of having to trawl through menus like all other DSLRS. I think it looks ugly. If Nikon want yo make a pure photography camera, why not just spend all the money on the sensor and the processor and just leave us with manual controls and maybe a light meter and maybe make it as light as possible. Why not go back to the drawing board and first decide what made the old cameras so great and so fondly remembered rather than worrying. About the asthetics.

Df = Delightful Fantastic... This is not for young photographers who have grown up on the melted-butter rounded all look-alike SLRs or DSLRs. No this is for photographers like me. I had a Nikon FM from 1977 (still have it actually) and it rarely left my eye until I got Nikon F3hp with MD-4 in 1983. I shot over 150,000 photographs with that F3hp until I stupidly allowed myself to be drawn into digital in 2006. Think about that for a second... I shot through the same camera body for 23 years. Now in the DSLR world your body is only good for 5 years max. I miss using my F3hp, but film is just so hard now. For years I've wished for something like the Df. In my opinion they did not go retro enough. Put in a nice bright split-image viewfinder, take away AF, the monitor and rear buttons... Give me just the same controls; all analog as my beloved F3hp. Photography has been ruined by the rear monitor. You can never learn to be truly great unless you have trial and error. Make me wait till I get home and download to my Mac. Real pure still Photographers make their camera an extension of their body. As a 50 year old photographer, to me the May be the first step in a dream of many of my generation. The Df is comfortable... Please Nikon... Keep them coming!

Ditto,save for the fact that I cut my photographic teeth on Canon, specifically the F-1 family around the same period. I would have no problems re-adjusting to the knobs and dials and such, as I do miss these functions from time-to-time. I would love to see Canon bring put something similar to the F-1 (AE styled finder), though I am not holding my breath.

Did you actually watch the review? Kai's complaints had nothing to do with its retro-ness, in fact if anything he agrees that it isn't retro ENOUGH. It's also an issue of performance, though, as this camera doesn't seem to measure up in a number of ways (though the low-light capability is terrific).

I'm pretty happy with the Df, if I could return it I have to say I maybe would, mostly because I agree it seems a bit half-assed, but for whatever reason I enjoy shooting with it over the 610. Photo quality between the two is comparable, the Df seems a bit snappier to me but that might just be perception, ergonomically I prefer it with lighter lenses, but with heavier lenses the grip starts to hurt your hand a bit. I wish Nikon would ditch the plastic leather texture too that looks and feels super cheap. Overall I would say personally that I wouldn't get it again, but I'm stuck with it for now because lens & shutter has a terrible return policy, aka never buy from them ;)

Wow. This review is quite shocking. I actually tested the Nikon df today, and I actually liked it! It's not as heavy as the d800 and d610 (which makes it more likely to be my go-to camera); it takes sharp images (focus was great) and it is REALLY fast (faster than the d610 and d800 - which I own); and the d610 requires you to be severely still when snapping photos at events or else you WILL have motion blur - even WITH A LENS THAT HAS VR. The only issue that I saw was the one slot for the sd card and no video (which I could care less about the video as I hardly use that anyway and I can always use one of my other camera for video). I don't think this was a fair review......... and I'm a liitle disappointed because ...... I ADORE DIGITAL REV! :-(

Good to hear a critical review. You said basically everything I was thinking... should've been manual mode only, come with the 51-pt AF as well as a split prism screen, and also should've been way lower priced. The d600/d610 is far better and cheaper, and the D800 is no contest at that price point.

My experience with the Nikon Df is exactly the opposite of this review. I agree the camera has some quirks and is not for everybody. However, it is not a bad camera design-as Kai chose to portray it. The camera has marvelous high-ISO capability, the best of a 35mm-sized camera (bar none), can use virtually any f-mount lens made by Nikon since 1959, is lighter and smaller for easy daily carry, has weather sealing equivalent to a Nikon D800, and is not a fat cookie-cutter DSLR, looking like all the other DSLRs. The appearance of the Df is great and does make people ask about the camera when they see it in public. The external dials are highly functional, especially for a photographer with lenses having aperture rings. If you are old enough to remember using film Nikons of old, the camera will feel very natural in your hands. If you are unable to deal with ignoring the shutter speed dial when using aperture priority mode (like Kai), you probably ought to stick with standard DSLRs. This is a polarizing camera and one either loves it or hates it. I feel it quite silly that Kai did not present a more balanced review of the camera, like Chris Nicholls of TheCameraStoreTV or Steve Huff did. For a real review of the camera, see those reviewers. Otherwise, enjoy Kai's negative, profane, sarcastic, and quite flawed presentation.

I've been using a Df since it first came out and I love the camera. It's clear to me that Kai has never used one, except for this ridiculously inaccurate review. He is deliberately causing contention, which raises the number of views. This isn't a real review. It's a eyeball and rating grab. I've noticed a lot more of these bad-reviews of Nikon equipment since Kai became a Canon fanboy. Shame on you DigitalRevTV. driving off customers, you are!

Noah Nance I think the context is the issue, in my opinion. Is it a good camera? Yes. Does it blow the D800 out of the water? No. Focusing is a big issue, IMHO, so that's a valid point. But it's the price point that is a big sticking point for me. If it were a D4 in a retro body, I might be willing to say the price is justified. But It's a D4 sensor with all of the D610's guts in a retro body. The use of the dials is not so efficient...not nearly as efficient as the thumb/forefinger dials on the rest of their lineup. It's not enough to be retro. It needs to be efficient and usable. And in that regard, I think the Df takes a step backwards from the rest of Nikon's digital lineup (even from their Film lineup). So I agree with Kai on this one. It's a bit phoned in. Not what we should expect of Nikon.

Agree with Kai. And after looking through the negative comments about the video, i think some of you guys misunderstood Kai. He's not saying it is not good to go back to a older design, but instead he is saying Nikon should have go even further with the retro style. Kai is not saying old fashioned dials are not good, he is just saying these particular ones on the Df are not properly done to honour the old FM. Remember, this review is done by a guy who loves his Leica M s, so what he really want from Nikon, is a properly done, proper retro, with proper simple old fashioned controls, proper mechanical structures, instead of this over-digitalised "retro" camera.

I am really disappointed with DigitalRev, it's okay to give bad opinions, but this is almost disrespectful for the sake of views. The Nikon Df is an amazing camera. Those who do not understand the D4 sensor because they haven't used it, those who don't understand the dials, because they never used a film camera in their life, those who think pixels and sharpness drive quality, those who think this is retro, imho, this Df is very close to what digital photography should be like. It's hard to come to an opinion without using it yourself, the fact is, it is setup so you don't have to chimp at the screen at all. I really hate the word retro, there's nothing retro about it, I still shoot film personally and shoot digital professionally, this is not retro, it's classic, its fundamental.

The Nikon DF is an amazing ``concept``, I think most, if not all, photographers will agree on that(and many, me included, were waiting for such a concept to come around), but it is extremely poorly executed and include many questionable design and engineering decisions. For DigitalRev not to point out those many flaws would have been dishonest.
@ktran11
@ktran11 10 жыл бұрын
bullsharkreef the flaws mentioned are subjective, and honestly not detrimental at all. He trashed on the focusing system that he once praised. Does it really come down to those dials? Really? D700 had D3 sensor for half the price, now Df is the same fashion, what's different? the dials, which allows for manual control or set to automation as you accustomed to regular slr, it allows for that option, that's no validity to bash this camera, its performance and image quality of the top line D4.
@bullsharkreef
@bullsharkreef 10 жыл бұрын
ktran11 It is not the performance of the D4, if you think so you've never handled a D4, it isn`t even performing as well as the D7100(the D7100 has a better autofocus system, faster max shutter speed, faster continuous shooting, faster flash sync, dual card slot etc etc.); it has the D4 sensor, but it ends there. And the design flaws DR mentionned are valid; for example: why have a dedicated ISO dial, but then have to rumble through the menu for auto? Now that's just stupid.
@ktran11
@ktran11 10 жыл бұрын
bullsharkreef because the auto option is there, but i will tell you not many use the auto iso function, especially for the majority that shoot aperture priority. and for me, i have never used auto iso in my life. only one element should be auto at a time, this camera will only make better photographers.

Well i got to share my opinion; As a photographer i shoot very often with a Nikon F2 and what i think about this type of cameras and, consequently, type of photography is that it induces the photographer to "pre-view" the actions of the subject and "pre-pare" all the functions on the camera and his body movements to compose and take the shot! Fotography it's all about capturing a fraction of time that makes sense by itself, so we have to be part of it, work with it and make it happen. Don't expect fast focus or a good photography if you didn't predict and prepare to take it. Just my opinion. Tkx for the Review and happy NEW YEAR! :)

I own a D800. And I own the Df. Needing a second body, I wanted something smaller and lighter than my D800, but with superior low light and good at everything else. My Df can focus in extreme low light, just like my D800. Come to think of it, so can the D600. This review mentions the image quality in PASSING, while worrying about the style. The pros I know who bought this camera to go with their D800/D4 and this is a 100% amateur review that fails to cover where the Df can fit into a serious kit. Note that real shooters like Moose Peterson and Bjorn Rorslett love the Df, while kids/young adults are confused. I can operate this camera FASTER than the D800. Hmmmm. The Df WB is also superior and so is the dynamic range above ISO 800. Files from the Df look better straight out of camera as well, requiring less PP. If you shoot for a living you can understand why some will want a Df. Hobbyists will be best served by a D610.

People are really pissy about this review. More than a few of you said Kai missed the purpose of this camera. So I ask you who know, what is the point? As I said in a previous comment according to Nikon it's "Pure Photography." But you could achieve the same level of manual control on any modern camera. To me that's the entire marketing for this thing, manual controls. Personally I think Nikon was trying to hard. I read a lot of these comments and my conclusion is that again most if not all of the points people are making about the use of the DF can be answered by shooting manually on the camera you already own. Better yet shoot film. And if you're serious about this "pure" thing, then shoot with a box camera with a plate, or a view camera.

The layout controls are difficult to handle also. They resemble that of the old FE models. The buttons and knobs are so small that even photographers with small hands will find it difficult to work with. The Nikon D7000 or D7100, also modern day cameras are much easier to handle than this one; and I believe even weigh and cost less also. And you still can do PURE PHOTOGRAPHY with these two.

The advantage Leica have in this regard is that all lenses are still the equivalent of Nikon AIS so they have a better market for this.

I don't think Nikon actually meant to make this a serious camera, it is a joke. But in a good sense, I believe they're marketing it to people with money to blow that want a camera that is a somewhat stylish or different looking dslr that takes decent photos. It's not really meant to compete with any other camera. Kai is right, it's just an oddball. Any plans to do the Canon α7K? I think DSLRs are going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo over the next 10 years or so. I've got a D800 and decided to buy a Fuji X-Pro1 after seeing your review for a carry around; after using it I'm now sold on the compact format. The D800 will probably be my last DSLR.

I think you missed the point of the camera. It isn't just about style or looks. It's about function, feel, and the user experience. My original Nikon F is possibly my favorite camera I have ever had the opportunity to use (my leicas give it good competition, but SLR's and rangefinders are apples and oranges). The way I look at this camera it's as if it is nothing more than a digital sensor for a camera I love. I can continue to have full manual control over all aspects of the camera and maintain the general feel of what I enjoy and still get fantastic image quality. The sensor is really the heart of this product. It's a fair criticism to say the automation isn't so great but that really isn't the point. Yes, it may be slow to use if it's not what you are used to. But this camera is for those who are. For the first time there is a new SLR on the market I can see myself seriously using.

Really, such a wasted chance. I love the actual concept, but even if I could afford one I wouldn't buy this, simply for the compromised ergonomics/controls. The AF doesn't even bother me that much, but if I have all those manual dials, I want them to DO SOMETHING in every shooting mode. How hard would it have been to take away the mode dial altogether, simply include an "auto" setting on all relevant dials plus maybe a "quick snapshot" button for instant full-auto action, and have at it without a care in the world, just like on an analog camera? Also, why is it so hard to figure out an indirect electronic control for aperture, maybe a rotating ring around the lens mount? This is just so half-arsed in terms of analog-feeling controls.

I'm D4 user. I find Df is a bit of joke. I don't see much advantage of buying it besides unless you like the design or want D4 sensor but can't afford D4. I would rather have D800 for its price. However, Nikon must have done something right since Df is selling quite well.

Lets set things straight. The idea behind the Df is "Pure-photography" Pure photography is based on using a camera Manually Does the Df do this? Yes it does The Intention of this camera is to NOT use auto focus or have auto ISO on a dial nor video, rather manual focus and use it the way film cameras were used. The idea of this camera is to bring one back to the feel of a film camera, and it does just that. To me, the Df is a a great camera which puts a lot of focus on using a camera on how it was intended to...manually. But one thing for sure it that it is a fair bit more than what most would pay for, unless you're a rich hipster or a rich pro-togropher who wants to show and teach their kids how to use a one. I personally think this is a great camera and it is a camera where one must grow into and feel comfortable with. every thing has pros and cons, the Df is no exception but i really think the Df is a great camera with a slightly inflated price tag.

I bought the DF solely on the D4 sensor and not so much the retro style camera look. How do I feel about all those dials on top? Well, it's a lot better than going into the menu settings. The dials are bit quirky in terms with functionality, but you get use to it. All I care about is the final picture I take. The camera is so much lighter than a D4 and I can't really spend the time dealing huge files coming out of a D800. However, I do feel that they should have used the new 35mm 1.8g instead of the 50mm.

I usually enjoy your videos but this was simply a bad review. Ten minutes of you acting like you're too cool for this camera. Yes, it's more expensive than it should be. Yes, the AF area should be a bit larger, but it's certainly never stopped me from being able to make a picture. I use a Df as a third body, backing up two D4's when I'm on assignment. There are a few very good reasons why I like the Df. It's a tiny, super-quiet, full-frame body that has a D4 sensor for superb low-light work. I will usually have either a 20-35/2.8 zoom or a 300/4E PF ED prime on the Df, mounted to my hip on a Cotton Carrier, meaning I can have a super-tele body that weighs next to nothing, doesn't get in the way, and is quiet enough to shoot plays and even funerals without disturbing the peace. I get the flexibility of three bodies while only having to "carry" two, because the Df is so diminutive. For me, it's more suited to my work than the D610 (which I also used to own) because it's smaller and has a matched sensor to my two main D4 bodies. As an added bonus, it's the only digital Nikon that can use any lens from 1959 to present, so all my cool old Nikkor glass is still relevant. The only other body that can boast that ability is the F4, but not even that great camera can use the new G lenses with manual functionality. Additionally, I've never had any problem focusing the Df manually with old glass, but maybe that's because I grew up using manual-focus film cameras, so I'm practiced at doing the work. I can understand why it would be difficult for P-Mode Prodigies to get the hang of it. Is the Df perfect? Of course not, but it's a lot better than you're giving it credit for.

+Darren Abate Media You seriously have 2 backup body's? I mean, I can understand you use a backup body, because you don't want to end up with a non working camera at an assignment and no shots as a result. But two backups? Why not get a 3rd backup? Or a 4th? ;) :)

+pdebie1982 I'm a wire shooter, so if I really wanted to split hairs, all three bodies that I'm using are technically primary bodies. To them are mounted a wide zoom, a tele zoom, and a super-tele prime. Specifically, a 20-35, a 70-200, and a 300/4ED PF on the Df. Very often, all three are used on assignment without time for switching lenses.

CSLFiero I have to say that that’s a very glib reply. It costs a whole heap more than $4 for film and processing over here in Europe, not only that but digital is now ahead of film in all sorts of ways - just try scanning in a photo and compare it with the depth, resolution and saturation you can now get in full-frame digital. I have three film Nikons: an FM, an F3 and an F4 - and, sadly, they’re now all relegated to the “shelf of history” in my office. I did buy the Df, despite this trivial review and it does just what I want it to do, so, each to his own, OK? I’ve been into photography for over 60 years; taught it, had exhibitions, done specialist work in various media and been paid for my work; I think I know what I want in equipment by now.

It's not like they don't know how to put Aperture priority Mode onto the shutter speed dial. My Nikon FE had that and it was made in 1979. I'm a long time nikon user (still have, love and use the D500, 700, 850 and D4) . I waited a while for the Nikon Df to come out, and when it did I was so disappointed I bought a fuji X-T1 and an F-mount adapter for it. If you want that retro camera feel with a small, lightweight but rugged body, all the manual controls how they should be, you cannot go wrong with the fuji X-T1 and X-T2. I've since bought a metabones speedbooster adapter for it and some fuji and viltrox lenses and it's awesome. With the fuji 27mm the camera fits in your pocket.

I bought the camera and I love it. I don't know why so much negative feedback was given by digital rev. The sensor is amazing The weight is a godsend compared to my d700 and d3 I'm I'm getting better iso and image quality in a smaller body and lighter The af focusing ia abit slow. But everyone has to remember its coming coming from from a d610 af motor. Really what more Can you expect from the af speed And If Nikon did make the DF have the d4 sensor with d4 af focusing. Who people buy a d4 Some people are complaining it's too small and their fingers are crawling up. Maybe the camera is not meant for them. It's not as ergonomic as a d800 or d4 but they they did try and base it on a film camera structure. Lcd. I think it's great. It is a hybrid after all Turn off the lcd if people doesn't want it on For me. I'm very happy with it. Every camera no matter what brand or model. Has its strengths weaknesses. Why would anyone buy another camera if one camera has it all For me. Amazing Amazing camera but does have some flaws like the af and one sd card but I can live comfortably with it

Ken Rockwell is alright but I don't agree with a lot of the things he says. For instance he only shoots JPEG. My stance, theres no reason to buy a DSLR if your only going to shoot jpeg. JPG processes the crap out of it sharpening it, changing the brightness, color.

Ben Kleschinsky I think what he's saying is that recording to JPEG is more convenient for most shots. I do agree with him. Similar for video, RAW is nice for special shoots, but it's a pain with the extra size and less ability to quickly review content. I use a combination of both depending on the subject.

This camera was not designed for Kai's demographic. If you don't like the camera... Fine. Kai has no idea what he's talking about because he's been brought up on digital, or if on film I'd bet it was something from 1995 or newer. You know, that's about when the camera manufacturers started spelling the company name out in bright text on the included strap. They started doing this because all of the SLRs looked nearly identical. All Kai is considering is how in his limited experience this camera does not perform as well as a D800 or D4. Guess what... It's not supposed to perform the same. The Df is designed for us old guys who want dials over digital displays and buttons. We want that classic look and feel. This is not about the camera as a tool. This is about the camera as an component of enjoyable photography. The person whose world will be rocked by this camera is the very experienced Nikon photographer who wants to pull out and use nome of that glorious pre-AF Nikkor glass. I love my Nikkors from the 60's, 70's and 80's. All metal, supremely engineered and produced. I just wish they had a split-image option for manual focusing. Kai never gave it a chance because he has no idea what he's really testing. The entire review was a waste from the beginning. I do hope Nikon and other makers keep on with this approach.

I guess we have to wait for Nikon to get a new creative more experienced team...

Wow, complete fail in your review and by most comments by people who don’t own, haven’t shot a Df. (ever wonder why those that do own one rate it so highly?) Is it perfect? No but it is a great camera, not video camera but a CAMERA. That is NOT a fail, If you Want a video camera, get one! Complaining that this doesn’t have it is like complaining that a Ferrari can’t take garbage to the dump or go off-roading. Same goes for comparing then complaining it can’t shoot at 10 FPS it’s not designed to be a sports action camera, want that? Spend double and get a F5! How about reviewing it for what it is, not what it isn’t. Novel idea I know. Don’t compare a Mustang vs. an F150 they both are great, they just do different things very well. What this Camera is, is a well built camera that just feels right in your hands, can use virtually any nikkor glass and is a joy to use. I would like to see a few tweaks however. Auto ISO position on the dial for one. Split prism from the factory would be great, built in AF assist light would be great. Built in WiFi and capable software. These can all be worked around but it would be nice to have them. D5’s AF system and sensor/processor would step this up. Other than that, this is a great camera that deserves a better rep from those that have never used it and lived with it daily and as such, don’t have the first clue as to what they are talking about.
