There is excellent information here that seems to be unavailable anywhere else. I am considering purchasing a Micro Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8 G Micro ED VR Autofocus IF Lens for my Nikon D700 but I have been unsure about whether the two are compatible. I see by the chart you posted that, with the stated lens being a type G lens, I will have full metering in M/A/P and S modes on the D700. This answers my question. So, thank you very much!

Now imagine if Nikon did a diferent mount for every new update as would be very profitable but of course they didn’t ) they did it for the consumers instead of money 🔥🔥

Great, well explained information. I have a question. I have a vivitar ai lens for Nikon F. It doesn't have the "rabbit ears" to couple with my FTN meter, how do I meter? Do I need an external meter and just set f stop?
@riversky332 жыл бұрын
You have to press the depth-of-field preview button to stop down the aperture. This is called stop down metering, or actual aperture metering, in contrast to open aperture metering.

Wow, thanks for the information. I watched this video a few months ago when I was deciding what DSLR to go for. A few days ago I was taking photos with my new-bought second-hand D800, and someone using a ZFC let me try out his vintage lenses. One was really hard to get on (first gen, forgot about incompatibility with the tab, luckily didn't break the camera) and the other one was 2.5 gen (has notch and aperture lever, but no CPU contacts) and I was wondering why it wouldn't go into P mode. When I turn the aperture, there is a symbol looking like a triangle, followed with number 0-7 representing max to min aperture.

Thank you for watching my video. I am not sure about the problem you described, but it seems to me that non CPU lenses should only make the camera work in A and M modes.

I miss one group of lenses which variation are not in this video. The lenses are the AF 80mm f/2.8 and the AF 200mm f/3.5 ED-IF, designed for the F3AF camera, but also working with the 2020 and the F4 (not the F4s or F4e version) camera’s. They have in lens focus motors, like the modern AF-S setup, but Nikon decide after the F3AF to implement the focus motor in the camera with the AF-D variation. Thanks for the complete overview

Nikon really makes this complicated, i appreciate how all EF lenses work with EF cameras

You are right. However, EF lens won’t work on manual focus SLRs though.

Thank you! I’m trying to help friends find appropriate lenses and cameras but I’m a Canon user which is much simpler! One friend has a F/N65 film camera and would like to purchase a digital Nikon that he can use the same lenses on. His main interest is macro photography. I have suggested an older Full Frame Nikon DSLR (like D600) so that the image he sees on the digital DSLR will match the image the film camera will take if he uses the same lens. If he buys a Sigma 105mm macro or Tamron 90mm macro, will they work on both film and digital cameras? Please let me know if I am wrong :)
@riversky333 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with third party lenses (Sigma or Tamron), but in theory, if it's an autofocus lens, it should work on both F70/F65 and D600.
