@andrewtongue7084 0 seconds ago I have the two knurled version, which is problematic in that the focusing screen is hard to access. I may have to find a third iteration (the single) so that focus screen replacement or refurbishment is easier. Thank you for your clarity, Sir !

I've had two FMs. The first I bought in June 1978. It's long gone. My current FM is version 3. Thanks for the info! Plus I can clean the focus screen now. My first FM got really dusty.

There is excellent information here that seems to be unavailable anywhere else. I am considering purchasing a Micro Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8 G Micro ED VR Autofocus IF Lens for my Nikon D700 but I have been unsure about whether the two are compatible. I see by the chart you posted that, with the stated lens being a type G lens, I will have full metering in M/A/P and S modes on the D700. This answers my question. So, thank you very much!

So if it has a non meter viewfinder, it's really expensive, but if it has metered viewfinder that doesn't work, or works but is considered obsolete, but STILL works perfectly, it's worth is less... Collectors make no sense. I have the DP-1 version, and it's perfect. It's my favorite. . And I didn't pay ridiculous collector prices. And rarely sits on the shelf very long.

Hi, I've got an FM2n with the CE mark on the base plate, which should indicate one of the final production years. The serial number is 860xxxx. However, the code inside the film chamber appears to read 47DF. It would make sense to me if it read 41DF, as I believe the CE mark wasn't used on Nikon cameras in 1997 yet and the camera was no longer produced in 2007. Unless the 7 is in fact a 1, then your explanation doesn't seem to work on my particular example. What do you think? Cheers!

Thank you for this informative video. Your table summarizes everything on one concise page, which I captured as an image and saved. I am expecting arrival soon of a late model F2AS with plausibly matching late serial numbers for both the body and the DP-12 finder. I already have several variants of the F model, plus a beautiful F3. But I look forward most to running some film through the “new” F2.

Thank you, agree with the 3 version - I had a new one in 1982 - my first proper camera - but dropped it on its first outing! (write-off). Since then I have always used a strap or a wrist lanyard.

I own 6 of these beauties, all with motor drives. I collect vintage film cameras but all of my Nikons are users. They are just too good to leave sitting on a shelf.

I have an FM2 with a code of 12CA. This should mean it was made in January 1982, more than a year before the FM2 was introduced (March 1983). Can you explain this? It does have a serial number close 7000001, so it is certainly early. But more than a year before introduction seems very early indeed.

DP-12 issue! My finder shutter readout isn't moving anymore (to be fair, can't remember how long) either of or odd camera. Pin alignment is &fine & it meters ok. It's a #792 later run & finder #687

This is the only video that accurately describes the versions, and makes it simple by discussing the knurled knobs. Most "experts" say you can't replace or clean up the focusing screen on the FM, I'd like to see a how-to video!

I got one of these classic Nikon F2 cameras black body and it came with the Nikon Motor drives and the DS2 expousre meter reader for use with the motor drive 2 PARTS and I need to buy a expousre meter HEAD and get the camera Repaired and I paid only £10.00 for it from a camera shop in London in 2023

I have a Nikon FM which I purchased new in 1980 along with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI lens to go with it. Mine is the 'series 3' (that is; serial number starting with '3'). The surround for the shutter release is not knurled; Nikon did away with the shutter release lock around the shutter release button in the '3' series serial number version. An excellent camera mine still looks and operates like new. I was not aware however that the focusing screen is removable it's not an issue however the supplied focusing screen is excellent.

Thanks for the clear explanation. Saw a mint one knurled knob version for 150 on eBay. Snatched it after I saw your vid. Interesting thing is I also saw a two knurled knob version which also has a serial starting from 3. Also additional piece of information I saw on forum: the newer versions(not sure exactly which one) does not have the dreaded foam seal at the far end of the mirror. Which is a pain to replace.
