Nikon F100 Review

Looking to get a into 35mm film and maybe a camera with some extra features? Then maybe the Nikon F100 could be an option for you. I got through the main features of the camera and talk about how the camera works. Later I go for a walk in the British heat and show some of those images.

One recommendation: when closing the film door, don't just push it down, but pull the door latch button down while closing. These things tend to break easily, and a shop that repaired mine recently recommended to close it that way instead.

Honestly thank you for the info on the door latch button. I’m planning on getting an F100 soon and I usually close the film backs normally like on my F3/F4. Didn’t know they were easy to break on the F100

Probably the most professional KZbin video I've ever seen. Instead of spending an hour waffling on about flah functions there was concise info but most importantly it succeeded in making me want to go out and take photos.

All awesome selections. I used an F-801 then F90X for travel. regular F90 is a bargin. As low as £30. F4 feels better because it is a Pro body built to last. Till this day, still has a good reliable single point Af detect on f2.8 glass. Works with oldest non Ai to modern G AF-s (limited modes of course. That folding Ai table made this blooming brilliant. F5 offered it on special order new. F90x was the current offering new with F5. F100 would follow on that few years after. Sort of the in-between to the F6. So F6 & F100 was the last of the best in film I think. :) I remember G lens use was simular limited usable on F90x in a P portrait mode but fiddily. Conclusion: F90x is blooming brilliant for the price but F4 is amazing workhorse on a Pro level till this day.

I chose the Nikon F100 because at the time, it had many of the same characteristics of the much more expensive Nikon film cameras, just scaled down a bit. It was almost like buying a good, full-blooded professional camera at half price. You know, the Jr. grade model. And I did indeed use it professionally. To call that camera a "beginner" camera is almost like saying that a beginner driver should purchase a Ferrari. I'm surely not comparing the Nikon F100 to a Ferrari. But I'm confident my point is well taken - that the F100 is not exactly a "beginner's" camera.

I have one. Which i should use more. I've been using older cameras i have with no exposure meters. While fun its hit or miss sometimes. I'd hit more often with the newer f100. Of course, i shoot digital mostly. Just spending a dollar a shot on some of the photos like you took i wouldn't be able to bring myself to do. The experience with older cameras is more fun. But the nikon f100 is just so easy and pleasant to use. Fitted with a nice lens you can get stunning film images. For the price of a nikon fm you can buy 2 or 3 of these. F100 is a significantly underrated camera.

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my F100. I needed a camera that could keep up during family outings. They've grown tired of standing around as I fiddle with aperture, shutter speed, and focus. Just as I'm about to take the shot, I'd often hear a frustrated, "Come on!" It was definitely time for an upgrade to something quicker. But heraing some of the reviews, this might well become my main camera. BTW your videos are great and I particularly enjoyed your photos. Sometimes you come across great reviews but when you see their photos, they are just poorly composed, like mine.

I had the opportunity to shoot an F100 in the past and that 1/8000 shutter speed was really handy, plus the camera felt really sturdy. Nice one, Nick!

Thanks. I'm glad super high shutters are the norm nowadays, just not on every film camera, but I suppose I didn't use it too often.

I've used Nikon cameras since I bought my first body in 1962. I bought an F100 about 20 years ago, moving up from an 8008S. I appreciated its ability to fully use my manual lenses, as well as the latest autofocus mount lenses. I like everything about the camera, including its ergonomic layout, its multiple metering capacities, and its balance between weight and durability. I bought mine used, and after accepting its virtues, about10 years ago, I bought a second used but like new body for $125 on an obscure auction site. (It remains in storage on the theory that in the event my primary F100 fails, it will be cheaper to replace from storage than to repair.) I also bought a set of decent if not spectacular zooms for the F100 in lieu of my vast collection of manual and autofocus primes on the theory that the zooms are more prone to get used in what are usually "grab and go" photo opportunities. Nice video.

I've one and really love it. Moving from it to my D700 is a breeze, since the layout of both is very similar. It only has two main flaws: the back door latch and the battery holder. Both are poorly designed and break if you don't care for them. I've searched the world for spares and it's easier to win the lottery. Not even in Japan I could find any of these. So, enjoy yout F100 with a bit of care. It's an amazing camera, full featured, very capable, has a nice grip in you hand (well, at least on mine), a pleasure to use.

The best film camera that will forever stay affordable because it will always remain under the shadow of the F6. Great news for film enthusiasts because this camera will never become trendy.

A great camera! The F100 also works fine with G series lenses (including VR). All of the picture shooting information (similar to EXIF information) can be read from the camera using a Nikon MV-1 card reader. If your F100 gets afflicted with the dreaded "sticky plastic", scrub the sticky area using Pec Pads and iso propyl alcohol to remove the sticky layer of plastic.

Mine did start to become a bit tacky. I haven’t resorted to isopropyl yet as thankfully leaving it out to air helped reduce it.

Pls close the back veeeeery careful. The closing mechanism may break. Love the F100 too! Just got a Tamron 15-30 VR one week ago. The best film cam available. Had the F5... sold it 1 month later.

Lovely video Nick :) As someone that had the Nikon F100 now 3 times around i can really appreciate your take on it . The F100 was my last analog camera in 2006 or so before i started thinking about going digital. And it was one of the first analog cameras i yet again bought a year or so before the pandemic when i started taking up film again. I actually sold it not that long ago and needed money then right away found one with even better condition and bought it again today lol. So hopefully this one will hold up for a while and i will start shooting with it more again :) Regards Martin.

I suggest to not slam the camera back like you did at 9:20. These cameras are known to have latches break since they are plastic after one closes it like you did. Just a pro tip! Great shots!

I never had any of those lenses so can't say for certain, but as they still use the f mount, I can't see why not. Though you may want to do your own research to make sure. Apologies I couldn't help any further.

Yes. the Series E Nikon lenses are fully functional on the F100. That is one of the primary virtues of the F100 - It tales anything made from 1977 AI up to the Z mount lenses.

Yes you can use the E series lenses although unfortunately you will lose 3D matrix metering. The camera will default the its center-weighted meter which unfortunately has a ratio of 75/25 and not Nikon’s tried and proven 60/40 ratio which in my humble opinion would have made it more useful when mounting manual focus lenses. You will retain spot metering. But yes, anything from AI all the way up to current G lenses will work flawlessly on the F100 with some minor loss of functionality depending on which era. Now, the modern manual focus lenses with electronic contacts such as the Voïgtlander 40 F2 do retain 3D matrix metering because the F100 can communicate with these lenses.
